Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

I'm really behind ao don't know if anyone posted this already. This is a doctor in Lombardy appealing to people to take it seriously. I read it in a German new article and this is Google translated because I don't have time to do a proper translation before the school run.

Bergamo - In the hospitals of the region most affected by the coronavirus epidemic, Lombardy, the situation is getting worse. A young surgeon, Daniele Macchini, who has to watch the situation in the hospital where he works, Bergamo's "Humanitas Gavazzeni", is getting out of hand faster and faster, uses Facebook to make a dramatic appeal to his compatriots. In it he asks the citizens to act responsibly, to follow the instructions of the authorities and to leave the house only for absolutely necessary reasons.

But we are currently destroying our national health care. I watched as departments and personnel were reorganized in preparation for the war we must wage. No other words come to mind. The war has suddenly broken out and we are fighting day and night. One by one, the unfortunate arrive in first aid. They all have the same complications. Let's stop calling her ugly flu. There are few pharmacological therapies against this virus. The course of the disease depends on our body. We can only support him if he can no longer make it. The truth is that the main hope is that our organism can deal with the virus on its own. All antivirus therapies are only experimental in nature.

And this disease doesn't just affect older people. I assure you that if you see young people end up in resuscitation and being intubated, or in the worst case, needing to be connected to an ECMO device, it will go away

I don’t understand why the government isn’t enforcing self isolation for people who have minor symptoms now rather than in 10 days time?!

As I understand it (from the CMO) it's because at the moment there are few cases and we're still in cough and cold season- statistically it's v v unlikely that a sniffle would be CV. However, over the next two weeks cases will increase and cold and flu will decrease, therefore soon it will make sense (statistically and from a public health POV ) to make people self-isolate.

I found the talk from BJ and the CMO/CSO reassuring too. They were focused on making changes that seemed to be measured and evidence-based.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 07:59

I haven’t listened yet but the reasoning is making sense to me too

cathyandclare · 10/03/2020 07:59

I think the government realise people will only tolerate being isolated for a couple of weeks and are waiting to deploy this at the time it will be most effective.

Yes Cherrypi, totally agree

DrWhy · 10/03/2020 08:00

facingtheunknown arts and crafts and sticker books along with plenty of TV might entertain the 3 year old for 20 minutes at a time. The one year old climbs everything and eats everything (including colouring pens!) and has to be watched. DH and I both have jobs where we can work from home but realistically are only going to be able to work alternate days or half days at best and even then only if the children are kept in another room or the garden.

Tempuserregularposter · 10/03/2020 08:09

Facingtheunkown and yet most of the parents think the head is being hysterical. The only thing I am beginning to notice is that the posts criticizing the school are getting less likes as the crisis develops.

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2020 08:10

I was about to say that the advice to self isolate if you have a cold / cough does make sense to start in a few weeks because of seasonality.

I feel sorry for people who have coughs for chronic conditions though as they will have public shaming if they don't self isolate too.

I think ace inhibitors are one medication that have that side effect too so pretty miserable for you if you have an underlying heart condition.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 08:12

High time for the govt to ban all foreign school trips

The cost to the UK economy would be v v small and it would avoid the risk of needing self-isolation, maybe some schools closing, deep cleans etc

The hayfever season will be starting shortly for some of us

Late March - early May usually for me
I've got in remedies that I normally wouldn't bother with, because I don't want to alarm those around me, especially at gym or in my local cafe

I have to live here after the crisis is over and I suspect some things get remembered

I am bombarding my MP with information about China and Italy - exhorting him to put pressure on gov't to act sooner not later.

I do think writing to MPs could help - they're debating it today in parliament so a few well placed urgent emails might help.

QueenofmyPrinces · 10/03/2020 08:18

Are you in the kind of relationship where it would be dangerous for you to refuse to go?

No, but he would just be really, really pissed off. I’ve got no problem with him going on his own if he so wants to, but I know he wouldn’t, and then he just will make me feel very guilty that we’ve missed our family holiday because of me being a hypochondriac (his words).

He will probably suggest that he go and take the children if I’m adamant I don’t want to go, but I don’t want the children going over there either so there’s no way I will agree to that.

Not much of an expert if that's what they're claiming. Hmm

SistemaAddict · 10/03/2020 08:24

For all the hay fever sufferers: fexofenadine from the GP for the win. Start now to avoid it getting a hold on you unless yours doesn't start until later in the season. Avamys nasal sprays is great too. Again prescription only.

Apologies if this question has already been asked. With no COBRA scheduled for today, can we therefore assume no change in UK strategy / public guidance until tomorrow at the earliest?

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 10/03/2020 08:33

Cheese- yes, the doctor at the private teaching hospital Gavezzani has been quoted many times.

Can I suggest for 100% certainty rentaquotes, look out for frontline staff from the Sacco in Milan, or the Spallenzani in Rome (that's the hospital whose virologists were at the forefront of identifying the genome (??? Sorry, not a scientist but think that was it) about 5 weeks ago. They have been begged for interviews and to go on TV but are refusing saying they have jobs to do.

We are at the point now where anything not actually ratified by the news or with a source has everyone going "doctor from where?"

Do remember as well, everyone with a degree in Italy is a doctor.
