Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Youngatheart00 I asked the same question earlier. I'm still not sure if the plan / guidance will change today. However it looks unlikely unless something drastic happens.

KOKOagainandagain · 10/03/2020 08:34

Talking about Cheltenham festival on R4 and what a fascinating case study it is! FFS.

Let's see what happens if large social gatherings are allowed to continue at the start of a local epidemic in a pandemic. We have known the answer to that one since the Spanish flu.

"The Italian society of anesthesiology and intensive care has published 15 ethical recommendations to consider for doctors when deciding on admissions.
The criteria include the patient's age and the likelihood of survival, and not just 'first come first served.' "

I wonder if they would take an elderly patient off a ventilator if a young person comes in and there is no other one free Sad
Will this be the NHS in a few weeks ?

The Seattle nursing home with 31 positive residents and 13 residents already dead has said on Monday it had no kits to test 65 employees showing symptoms of the respiratory illness

So despite being the US epicentre not everyone associated with the place has been tested. Has the US Gov't just concluded they are positive so no need to waste a test on them and add them to the official statistics?

I fear we are also trying to massage statistics with our test criteria.

Has anyone seen this? It came up on my linked in feed. Looks like the transmission rate is lower than the sars thing

Allowing Cheltenham to take place pisses me off
That really looks like profit before lives
The big betting firms and the wealthy wanting to run their horses
(yes, I know self-employed & small businesses earn from this - they have little influence)

We need to cancel all the big public events - they are the low-hanging fruit that cause the least disruption to the daily lives of most people or the economy
and can be enforced

We are at the stage when we need to accept a few measures now that will cost,
to try to avoid more draconian measures later

Horehound · 10/03/2020 08:45

I want Cheltenham to go ahead. At least the first race today to see if my horse cones in Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 08:45

So about the same infectiousness as flu
iirc the UK gets about 8 million flu cases, nearly all mild, to produce the 600-25,000 deaths

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 08:46

BJ probably has some bets on too, hence no ban Grin

halcyondays · 10/03/2020 08:46

They already do assess patients to see if they are suitable for ICU treatment like ventilators. If they are frail and elderly, it may be decided that this kind of treatment could do more harm than good. It’s very u likely to work and if the patient does survive their quality of life will probably be very poor.

So even before Coronavirus many elderly patients either recovered from or died from pneumonia without ever being in ICU. If they are only testing ICU patients for the virus, they’re probably missing loads of cases.

Horehound · 10/03/2020 08:48

@BigChocFrenzy but I guess because lots of people are vaccinated against flu it means that Coronavirus will kill a lot more ?

slartibarti · 10/03/2020 08:49

Avamys nasal sprays is great too. Again prescription only.

No prescription needed if bought on line. I got mine from Simple online pharmacy.
I could have got a prescription from GP but wanted to avoid going in to the surgery.

BeardedMum · 10/03/2020 08:50

What bothers me is that in my kids school there is not even soap in the toilets🤷🏻‍♀️

originalcatlady · 10/03/2020 08:52

@Trolltoes alcohol injection wipes. They are quite "dry" so won't damage your phone.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 08:54

Horehound I think we're all assuming a much higher death rate from CV-19 than flu,
which has a death rate of "only" 0.01-0.1%

CMO is saying probably under 1% for CV-19
If it were 8 million people infected ... not reassuring
hence the desperate fight to reduce the numbers catching it - we can't let it get to flu numbers

tud41 · 10/03/2020 08:56

Are they waiting for 10-14 days for self isolation to come in to allow work forces to come up with contingency plans for this.. Seems the only logical reason

woodencoffeetable · 10/03/2020 08:57

@BeardedMum get onto the school secretary/admin and the pta.
our pta organised hand soaps & refills, paper towels and disinfectant for electronic equipment.

Try not to become infected!?!!?
Well thanks, I am trying but as my kids are still at school and OH at work and we're told business as usual it's a bit tricky as we don't know who might have it...

MrsMeg1 · 10/03/2020 09:10

@neveradullmoment99

That's very worrying. I am a teacher in s primaty school. Kids are washing their hands. Not in secondary though. My dd is at secondary. Heard others saying the same about other secondary schools

Same at my dc's secondary school, nothing has been said about hand washing or hygiene, still on parents cases about attendance so sick children attending dosed up on paracetamol. I noticed on parents evening that a number of the taps in the toilets didn't even work and both dc say often no soap. Some children coughing everywhere for a joke saying they've got Coronavirus. Not confident they are doing enough to help prevent the spread.
