Thank you Youngatheart. I'm hoping he would have enough notice/be allowed to get a train home in the case of a uni/regional lock down.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 20:00

Main reasons afaik for higher incidence & deaths in Italy:

Major trade links with China, hence many Chinese visitors in certain areas, plus Italians travelling over there and returning

They spread a lot of cases and the Italian authorities - because of the importance of this trade - was reluctant to act by stopping / monitoring this traffic until it was already too late

Persistent denial that they had a problem until cases were rocketing
Nothing to see, move on ....

Italy has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, hence a high % of people aged 80+ who are most susceptible

Early outbreaks started in homes for the elderly, brought in by visitors

Early cases were not noticed in time, as the elderly people often die of pneumonia

Youngatheart00 · 08/03/2020 20:00

@Jumpingintotheabyss Wow. Are we pressing self destruct or what? Unless there is some way of stopping quarantined individuals from boarding....but considering the exclusion zone I can’t see how? Appalling.

Very happy to be corrected if I have in some way got this wrong!!!

Adam Kate @amateuradam
14 days ago, Italy had fewer coronavirus cases than we do today. They employed similar public health measures to us. Now they have >7000 cases (366 deaths). Unless I'm missing something, this is us in a fortnight. Hopefully we won't wait that long before doing something more.

Robert Peston @ peston
Response from senior government source is “the Italians did several of the populist - non-science based - measures that aren’t any use. They’re who not to follow”.

Ferninando Giugliano @fernigiuliano
The U.K. government is briefing the media (anonymously and unspecifically) against the measures we are taking here in Italy to contain and mitigate the impact of Covid-19.

What have WHO said about China's response?
Unscientific?

Right...

@SummerSazz Torbay is definitely in Devon, it's just that it's a hotspot.

3 cases in Torbay came from a receptionist returning from North Italy, going to work in a doctors' surgery for a week, and passing it on to 2 colleagues.

1 case was the receptionist's son, who went to school for a week.

1 case is someone who went to church and took holy communion last Sunday.

Don't know who the other case is.

The nuns are kicking off at an abbey near here because they've put a stop on holy water. Because it's magical and protected by god and all that.

No idea how it's getting around 🙄. Surprised it's not more to be honest (I expect it probably is).

FCO updated information on norther Italy

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the following areas in northern Italy, due to an ongoing outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) and various control and isolation measures imposed by the Italian authorities on 8 March: Lombardy region (which includes the cities of Milan, Bergamo, Como) and the provinces of Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Rimini (all in Emilia Romagna); Pesaro e Urbino (in Marche); Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli (all in Piemonte); Padova. Treviso and Venice (in Veneto).

British nationals remain able to depart Italy without restriction. Residents of other parts of Italy are permitted to leave the isolation areas to return home. Otherwise entry into and exit from these areas is forbidden without official permission on the grounds of strict necessity; the authorities have confirmed to us that this will be granted for reasons such as medical need or work requirements. Travellers should check flight details with airlines. Additional restrictions include the closure of museums, cultural institutions and the suspension of all public gatherings, social events including pubs, nightclubs and games halls. Religious ceremonies and funerals are suspended. Ski facilities in the affected mountain areas are closed. Restaurants and bars remain open from 06.00 to 18.00.

Across the whole of Italy, museums and cultural institutions are closed and all sporting fixtures must be played behind closed doors. Childcare facilities, schools and universities are closed until 15 March. Public and social gatherings should be avoided with cinemas, pubs and clubs closed. Restaurants and bars remain open with reduced seating.

Just to be really trivial - can I just say that not touching my face has done amazing things for my skin.
I know that's not the point

ISRAEL- 29th case of coronavirus confirmed

UtahGirl12 · 08/03/2020 20:03

Thank you Username and Wherearemychickens. I was asking what a lock down is likely to look like, and whether my stupid student son would be able to come home from uni if his uni or region was locked down. He had pneumonia twice last year but is arrogantly sure he will be fine and I am stressing over nothing!

SnoozyLou · 08/03/2020 20:04

And they're quoting 21 cases in Devon on the local news.

AnneKipanki · 08/03/2020 20:04

You are right @UtahGirl12 .

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 20:04

Which is the situation the UK will be in on approximately 18th March.

Ok, at the risk of you all jumping on me in the same way you are another poster- this sort of stuff- posted as fact but based on no evidence or even expert opinion - how IS it helpful to let that go unchallenged?

Youngatheart00 · 08/03/2020 20:04

@HasaDigaEebowai thanks for that. Makes it even more appalling that flights are landing in the UK from Milan right now.

Youngatheart00 · 08/03/2020 20:05

@UtahGirl12 I misread your question. I read it as if he wanted to come home IN TO an exclusion zone. I doubt he’d be allowed to leave an exclusion zone, that would defeat the point of them. Apologies.

ChipotleBlessing · 08/03/2020 20:06

There has been serotyping of the Italian early cases which suggests they were linked to the German cases in Bavaria at the end of January. Those cases were contained in Germany, but it looks like there may have been uncontrolled community spread within northern Italy since then.

@HasaDigaEebowai.

Where? Source would be useful.

WaterSheep · 08/03/2020 20:08

Response from senior government source is “the Italians did several of the populist - non-science based - measures that aren’t any use. They’re who not to follow”.

What non- science based measures did Italy take? I must have missed this.

TokyoSushi · 08/03/2020 20:09

Possible stupid question alert ⚠

Is Italy so seemingly out of control simply because they adopted a 'do nothing' approach?

Does that therefore mean that other countries who adopt a similar 'do nothing' approach will follow suit and its just that Italy is further down the line than these countries?

So could you conclude that if a country does nothing, it'll end up like Italy in a few weeks?

Or am I oversimplifying things?

France bans gatherings of more than 1,000 people due to coronavirus - AFP

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 20:10

"how IS it helpful to let that go unchallenged?"

Then state your opinion and why you think this won't happen

Different opinions are welcome & sometimes valuable, especially when they come supplied with facts or references to professional opinion

What doesn't get a good reaction is telling us to stop posting or calling us hysterical etc

fwiw I've posted before my opinion that the geographical fact of being an island / collection of islands is likely to shield the UK from the worst effects,
unless the UK authorities really cock it up

Several pp disagreed with me
That's fine Smile

Donenow1 · 08/03/2020 20:12

Taking into account Italy... Case wise (I know its how longs a piece of string) does anyone have any idea of possible numbers by say mid or late March... I'm talking utter twaddle I know.. On a happier note I've told Sister In Law she is NOT visiting DH. I wrote a very formal communique via WhatsApp!!!!
