todayisnottheday and this is where it is so frustrating when users join a set of threads that have been discussing something for weeks and think they are all over it.

The trajectory being followed by our cases matches those of Italy, but tracking 10-14 days behind. The data is all on the previous thread - go find it if you want, or don’t, I don’t have to justify myself to you.

Just because you don’t understand the data and models of the spread of the virus doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

Bearbehind · 08/03/2020 20:13

Then state your opinion and why you think this won't happen

No, it’s up to those posturing things like this as fact to justify the basis for their assumption

Otherwise it’s scaremongering

MmeAlice · 08/03/2020 20:13

Danmark banned gatherings of more than 1000 people on Friday, I watched the statsminister's briefing live on the national TV channel DR. Still don't think the Danes have got a real handle on what's coming yet. Lots of Danes have been or are skiing this time of year in Italy.

NaturalBornWoman · 08/03/2020 20:13

The uk continued to accept flights from China so it’s just more of the same really. Countries with lower levels of cases, stopped than back in Feb

Actually Italy was the first European country to stop flights from China

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 08/03/2020 20:14

WaterSheep

They are referring to the Chinese travel ban.

The government like to say they were correct not to shut down flights from China because Italy did and they got it worse than us.

WHO has said travel bans don't work. Partly because people circumvent them by flying somewhere else first so they don't appear to have come from the banned country. Or they cross borders illegally without checks.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 20:15

Bear, this is a chat forum.

It's not the national news.

Bearbehind · 08/03/2020 20:17

It's not the national news.

Indeed, so it would be helpful if people stopped posting their opinions as facts and stirring up others anxiety.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 20:17

If large gatherings need to be banned, then sporting events can continue, but in closed stadiums

  • otherwise the ban is not serious
WaterSheep · 08/03/2020 20:17

MangePasTesOnglesVilain Thank you, I got a bit muddled there. Grin

AvocadoOwl · 08/03/2020 20:17

Is Italy so seemingly out of control simply because they adopted a 'do nothing' approach?

I don't think Italy have adopted a do nothing approach- they locked down the worst affected towns a fortnight ago. Whether that was enough remains to be seen but they won't begin to reap any benefits from lock downs until now-ish because people infected prior to restrictions being put in place will have been incubating over the last fortnight. Even once symptoms start it takes 5-7 days or so for people to get really ill so we may well not see the impact of their original lock downs (in terms of new daily cases) for another week.

That's my understanding anyway.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/03/2020 20:18

Where? Source would be useful

Can't give that I'm afraid since I have it from a staff member. Parents are being notified though and so I'm sure it will be in local press soon. Primary school in North West.

fedup21 · 08/03/2020 20:18

France bans gatherings of more than 1,000 people due to coronavirus

How will that affect schools of over 1000?

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 20:19

I thought you were leaving us to scaremonger ....

redstararnie76 · 08/03/2020 20:19

Oh Bear, are you still here - I thought you were off?

Do you butt into RL conversations as rudely as you have here?

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 20:19

Then state your opinion and why you think this won't happen

No, because I am not an epidemiologist/ virologist and realise therefore my 'opinion' would be worth fuck all. And even if I had one, I'd be cautious to publicise it anywhere with a large readership in case it was taken as fact by anyone, and subsequently used to fuel misinformation, anxiety and panic.

AnneKipanki · 08/03/2020 20:19

@UtahGirl12
Maybe parents in the lockdown area can "adopt" a student if their own child is away .

falcon5 · 08/03/2020 20:19

Hi there has anyone else had to phone 111 because of symptoms after having been in noted area (second level not first) so in our case Italy but not one of the 10 towns in northern italy? It all seems very clear on the online information but it seemed to vary a lot depending in advisor on the phone. Also it seems like quite a while to get a call back regarding a test. Just wondered if anyone else had experience?

Bearbehind · 08/03/2020 20:19

If large gatherings need to be banned, then sporting events can continue, but in closed stadiums - otherwise the ban is not serious

Well as we speak France v Ireland in Paris is going ahead, with fans, on Saturday and that’s a shed load more than 1,000 people..........

HeronLanyon · 08/03/2020 20:19

Op suggested it’s good to give blood of you can as many wont be able to. I agree. Currently online service for blood transfusion service is ‘unavailable’. I was checking health requirements section (have travelled to Indian Ocean recently). I wonder if it is being updated ??

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 20:20

Bear,

Your not in charge of us, or how other people react to anyone's post.

We are all, responsible adults. This isn't even on the main boards FFS.

HeronLanyon · 08/03/2020 20:20

Pp not ‘op’

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/03/2020 20:20

WHO has said travel bans don't work. Partly because people circumvent them by flying somewhere else first so they don't appear to have come from the banned country. Or they cross borders illegally without checks.

Far more difficult to do that with an island though.

Bearbehind · 08/03/2020 20:20

Do you butt into RL conversations as rudely as you have here?

TBH, if I heard this kind of scaremongering, then yes.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 08/03/2020 20:21

I'm thinking with skiers, there are a lot of nationalities in these cramped cable cars and gondolas.

People coming in and out of lifts and cafés with the change in air temperatures often makes people cough.

The type of people who go skiing generally are the better off who are often in jobs where you would travel and or meet up internationally quite frequently.

A perfect storm.
