Can everyone ignore @Bearbehind as the thread is being derailed.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 20:21

"How will that affect schools of over 1000?"

Good point

Would they consider that the school is divided into classes and hence technically not all 1000+ gathering together in the same stadium or whatever

hankyspanky · 08/03/2020 20:23

@ofwarren they have now closed the border to Switzerland to anyone except Health Care workers who have to show a special permit.

"All workers can continue to move to pursue their professional activity, both between the Italian regions and between Switzerland and Italy. The continuity of the Ticino healthcare system should thus be ensured ". The Federal Council communicated this in a note in which it also states that "cross-border workers will nevertheless have to bring a document, eg permit G (permit for foreigners), which certifies their professional activity ". For all other movements, however, the restrictions imposed by the Italian ministerial decree apply. The information was provided by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi Di Maio to his counterpart, Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis, during a telephone conversation, specifies the communication released by Bern. "The good collaboration between the Swiss, Italian and Canton Ticino federal authorities has made it possible to respond quickly to the challenges posed by the rapid advance of the epidemic on Italian soil."

Coronavirus decree in Italy
TG 12:30 on Sunday 08.03.2020After the introduction of the Italian ministerial decree on restrictions on travel in Lombardy and in 14 other provinces, control systems will be introduced at the borders with the aim of allowing transit only for frontier workers or authorized persons.

De-lurking briefly to thank you all for continuing these threads. I am finding them so helpful and informative. Your efforts are really appreciated, thank you!

Now back to lurking...

Schools may not house pupils in one room at 1000 but corridors and lunch queues etc are pinch points.

Nearlyalmost50 · 08/03/2020 20:24

Just to clarify- Torbay/Torquay is a unitary authority which is separate to Devon (which is everything else including Exeter) and Plymouth unitary authorities (I think that's what they are called anyway). Administratively they are separate, who knows why?!

That's why the stats appear as they do and the county of Devon has quite a lot of cases if you add them together (per 100,000 head).

TokyoSushi · 08/03/2020 20:24

So if Italy didn't adopt a do nothing approach and locked down a couple of weeks ago and that's where they are, what happens to those who have adopted a do nothing approach - even worse?

I'm probably catastrophising(?) I think I'll go and watch Crufts best in show to take my mind off it!

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 08/03/2020 20:24

WHO does say countries should employ social distancing though, which involves less movement and travel. They just don't seem to endorse bans per se.

Now this next is just my opinion, if I'm allowed to express one. Hysterical frenzy alert. Clearly politics and economics come into their recommendations. No organisation exists in a vacuum.

Yep-break/lunch/assembly/corridors.

NewYearNewTwatName · 08/03/2020 20:25

Bearbehind if you find yourself getting anxious by reading these threads. Step away.

I have given this advice to others before who were allowing their anxiety to peak from reading coronavirus threads.

step away, take break find something good to focus on.

it is not down to others to manage your anxiety. Be responsible and give yourself a break if you find it too much.Flowers

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. If posters don’t agree they are free to scroll on.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 20:25

Also, what is the implementation date, as international events, trade fairs etc are difficult & expensive to stop instantly

AllTheProsecco · 08/03/2020 20:26

Can anyone explain the UK figures to me? I posted a case near me a few threads ago which was reported on social media by a GP surgery based in Stockport yet Stockport reporting 0 cases. This was 3 days ago and patient had been into the surgery on 26th Feb with symptoms. Could the figures be skewed because patient has been isolated at a hospital in a different area? I don't know if they are in hospital or recovering at home but only thing I can think of to explain.

hankyspanky · 08/03/2020 20:27

Considering it was only on 22nd Feb that the first case was detected in Como and then ALL symptomatic people were tested that they discovered the clusters and. subsequently locked down the 12 initial villages in Lombardy.

It has moved staggeringly fast over the course of 2 weeks and 2 days.

Jumpingintotheabyss · 08/03/2020 20:27

Tokyo

I think culture must be come into it, Italians seem much more physical with each other than we are for instance, kissing on greeting, hand shake, hugs. Family structures seem to tighter?

pussycatinboots · 08/03/2020 20:27

Prosecco it's on the Granada pages on ITV news website.

Stuck in our room aboard the Grand Princess. They are rationing food and now did not bring a meal tonight. They told me they are out of food for the night. All we had was a small salad for lunch, breakfast was a small bowl of fruit. Someone better decide what to do quickly

newyear, I’m genuinely not anxious.

I can’t control this and I can’t isolate myself and my family indefinitely.

I started reading these threads as a source of good advice

Sadly they’ve descended into a race to see who can spread the worst news first.

Even if it’s based on opinion and extrapolation rather than facts

And I genuinely don’t understand why anyone finds that helpful

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/03/2020 20:29

This is a fascinating read - with lots of parallels to what is starting to happen here. Written before the advent of this flu virus. Very interesting.

I’m watching a piece of info given on this thread. I have my suspicions about the source and the veracity. So. We’ll see.

MarshaBradyo · 08/03/2020 20:30

Italy did a fair bit but whether they missed the starting point more than other countries could be something to do with it.

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 20:30

this is where it is so frustrating when users join a set of threads that have been discussing something for weeks and think they are all over it

What is also frustrating is when you are actually involved in working on the frontline with suspected cases, taking advice from people who have spent their lives working in public health and epidemiology and trying not to panic people.

Only to find a load of so called 'experts' on the internet actively fuelling panic, spreading or condoning the spread of misinformation and demanding school closures (which would mean me and the majority of my colleagues would not be able to work), and people nicking the hand gel from sick patients beds.

SuckingDieselFella · 08/03/2020 20:31

@Bearbehind
"And I genuinely don’t understand why anyone finds that helpful"

Me neither.

If it really is the end of the world would you rather spend it with your nearest and dearest or catastrophising with strangers on the internet?
Confused

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 08/03/2020 20:31

Saucery

Very cryptic? Are we to guess what you mean?
