So at the moment it's hand sanitiser, handwash and toilet rolls. What's next ?

My 16 year old Dd wants to go on a family trip to the supermarket. She’s told us that we’re all going to heap our individual trolleys as quickly and in a panic stricken fashion as possible - a kind of apocalyptic Supermarket Sweep. When they’re completely full, and we have terrified the entire store we are going to shamefacedly go to customer assistance and say we’ve actually changed our minds.

She’s actually quite a nice person. Honest.

PineappleDanish · 08/03/2020 11:36

Just back from my weekly Asda shop - not panic buying anything - but shooting evil looks at the numpties with their trolleys piled high with just bread mixes and loo roll.

Not an egg of any description to be had in the shops. Shelves cleared completely. Although my local Co-Op had loads.

GinDrinker00 · 08/03/2020 11:45

@PineappleDanish that’ll be down to the floods over the eggs.

Butterwhy · 08/03/2020 11:47

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies sounds delightful, guessing a joke but it's annoying enough when people change their mind about a basket, let alone when it's busy anyway. Maybe she needs a hobby?

PineappleDanish · 08/03/2020 11:57

I wasn't aware that floods had had an impact on the eggs. I am avoiding news as much as possible as obsessing over coronavirus is not good for anyone.

PestyMachtubernahme · 08/03/2020 11:59

Just been to our local Morrisons, it was boringly normal. No Carex (they had a full shelf last Monday, I bought some for work)
I didn't seen and hand sanitiser, however I don't really know where they keep it.

cologne4711 · 08/03/2020 12:04

DH went to our local Sainsburys today to do our weekly shop. They had everything, even loo roll. The only thing they didn't have was hand sanitiser, not that we need that anyway. Apparently the lady on the checkout said they have everything, it has just been selling out quickly. Maybe things will start calming down now.

Lulu1919 · 08/03/2020 12:06

Tesco just now had empty pasta shelves !??!

BubblyBarbara · 08/03/2020 12:13

You need to think of things that have no direct replacement and especially things relating to dirty jobs. So less likely to be food and more likely to be nappies, bin bags, wet wipes.

Lordfrontpaw · 08/03/2020 12:14

Salt. I think salt will be next.

Largeyellowdaffodil · 08/03/2020 12:15

According to the lady in Waitrose there was a fight- yes a fight -yesterday as they ran out of loo roll.

This morning they had limited supplies- it was heaving at 11am (when I usually go in and it is quiet). They had 1 type of liquid hand soap and that was selling fast. Other shelves looked light- there seems to be a coca cola supply issue as they as missing in sainsbury's yesterday as well.

Most people were over 60. I was told by a woman in the queue that it was irresponsible of people not all to be self isolating for 2 weeks and that we all needed to be more responsible citizens. She was going home and not coming out.

AlexaShutUp · 08/03/2020 12:26

Pasta and handsoap have been rationed in our local Tesco. There was hardly any pasta left though, so I was glad to think of my little stash at home!

Plenty of toilet roll at the moment. They also had handsoap today, though it has been absent for the last week or so. No hand gel anywhere!

AlexaShutUp · 08/03/2020 12:27

Oh, and no paracetamol!

MelanieFrontage · 08/03/2020 13:58

Our Tesco appears to be broadly back to normal now after being very low on stock last weekend. I went in yesterday and the ibuprofen had been restocked. The only item out of stock was hand sanitiser although antibacterial liquid soap was running low, as was pasta.

Plenty of loo roll in stock!

Lou0390 · 08/03/2020 14:00

Popped into large Tesco this morning, 1 bag of pasta left, no antibacterial wipes or sprays. No toilet roll. All the usual things gone.

They are only allowing 5 bottles of UHT milk per person and restricting how many tin food items people can have.

Plenty of calpol but no pain killers only a few expensive brands Confused

Paperdollss · 08/03/2020 14:12

Let’s hope the low stock in the big supermarkets will encourage people to shop locally, I went to 2 mini market type shops today and they had plenty of cleaning products, toilet roll, rice & pasta and hand & bar soap.
To be fair my local big supermarket was very well stocked although I know across the city there have been shortages

RhubarbTea · 08/03/2020 14:12

In my local Tesco white basmati rice was almost entirely gone, loo rolls very low, they were rationing handsoap and there was an employee who seemed to have been tasked with hovering around the hand sanitiser section (there was none), intercepting people who wanted some and telling them when the next delivery might be.

TheHagOnTheHill · 08/03/2020 16:33

Tescos is rationing.
I have never seen so many people buying flour before.
The cheap tinned tomatoes had all gone and all the pasta except wholemeal. There was only a little rice.No one seemed to be buying noodles though, which is good because we wanted that for tea tomorrow.
I panic bought a high bottle of gin!And if push comes to shove the 3 year old Christmas pud may finally get eaten!

UntamedWisteria · 08/03/2020 17:00

Waitrose just now had no loo roll or painkillers.

Luckily they still had some bags of the organic basmati rice I buy, but the cheap stuff had gone.

Bonkers.

DaveTheDesigner · 08/03/2020 17:29

I know where you can buy tons of Rice but I’m buggered if I’m going to tell anyone.

randomchatter · 08/03/2020 17:52

Cough medicines seem to be a thing in my area. Chemist is now only one bottle per customer. Doesn't matter how many times you tell people it's not flu just coz the symptoms are 'flu-like'!

My worry is that the government seem to think that the bulk cough medicine buyers will self isolate!

torthecatlady · 08/03/2020 17:56

I agree that fuel shortages are likely but because of panicking. I actually need to buy diesel tomorrow. I went to Asda today and the shelves were bare (toilet roll, kitchen roll, bleach, anti-bac wipes / spray, hand wash, painkillers, UHT milk) - fortunately we tend to have a good supply of these things in the cupboard.

SouthWestmom · 08/03/2020 18:05

No pasta, sanitiser, soap in our large Tesco. No frozen vegetarian food except peanut burgers.

Sainsbury's check out told me people are getting round the two person hand sanitiser by using the self check out.

Lordfrontpaw · 08/03/2020 18:09

I buy 20kilo bags of rice from a small Middle Eastern shop near us. We do eat an awful lot of rice though.

Oscarsdaddy · 08/03/2020 18:13

I’m gonna sound weird here but I don’t do pasta so never noticed in our local Waitrose yesterday if they had run out but there was no loo roll, paracetamol or hand washes

Assistant said loo roll arrived daily on first come first served basis but they were taking about restricting numbers from Monday
