So at the moment it's hand sanitiser, handwash and toilet rolls. What's next ?

In aldi yesterday there was Tom's of pasta and toilet rolls! They only thing they didn't have was the sanitizer

Surely petrol won't run out if more people work from home, self-isolate, don't visit relatives, reduced public sporting events so make fewer car journeys etc. I've been starting to work 1-2 days extra at home and I've noticed my fuel consumption has decreased

The average person can't easily stockpile fuel!

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 08/03/2020 08:31

I was in Lidl yesterday, loo roll was flying off the shelves

As was hand soap.

I put some in my trolley, then put it back, thinking “I am not playing this fucking game” Grin I am such an awkward bugger.

I will look the baked bean and loo roll crisis right in the face when it happens

For now it can fuck off

Just bought what I normally buy

SouthWestmom · 08/03/2020 08:33

I've got a stock pile in case we are stuck in for two weeks and can't get anything.

If it is an epidemic or pandemic I'm worried drivers and shops will be affected by illness as well and with three kids and elderly mum I've made sure I've separated a few things we may need. But only eg a packet paracetamol and bottle calpol. Not 10 bottles.

I did the same with my online shop. Put in extra pasta and tinned pulses soap and loo roll and then took it back out again an hour later when I'd had a stern word with myself Grin

My Waitrose was low on lentils too. That made me laugh- so middle class.

What do people call stockpiling? How much of stuff counts as stockpiling rather than just normal having stuff? Is it having enough to last you the next week? Two weeks? Two months?

I am a strong believer in having things in ‘stock’ - so I don’t and never have waited until I am down to the last toilet roll (for example) before buying some more. In my head, this is sensible and normal and not stockpiling.

mindproject · 08/03/2020 09:02

The YouTubers have all been stocking up on lip gloss and face primers for years now. Some of them have drawers full. It's like they knew this was coming.

Spacie · 08/03/2020 09:05

I’m hoping that if we do get stuck indoors then someone will open and eat the bran flakes that have been in the cupboard forever.

or the 4 pack of tuna with a best before date in 2018.Wink

Lordfrontpaw · 08/03/2020 09:08

We have a smallish Waitrose near us - mostly people picking up a basket on the way home from work or a small trolley of fresh food, sometimes tourists getting provisions for holiday lets.

Yesterday people were piling trolleys with pasta (the shelves were empty on Friday when I went into the big one to get some milk), oil, big bags of rice, loo roll, anything disinfectant, it really was like those disaster movies where people loot stores (obviously people were paying). The staff were running to the store room to check items for stressed shoppers.

It was quite like Christmas Eve really. I assume stores are still delivering?

MarieQueenofScots · 08/03/2020 09:10

I genuinely think the bizarre panic buying is area specific.

Which then makes me wonder why people in some areas are more panicky than others!

Baaaahhhhh · 08/03/2020 09:21

I honestly can't understand the cleaning products panic. One bottle of multi use lasts a couple of weeks, as does a bottle of bleach or toilet duck. What the fuck are people doing with it all? Spraying it in the air? Oh wait......Hmm

Aderyn19 · 08/03/2020 09:40

I can understand people in cities getting a bit twitchy. There's a hell of a lot of people and not that many supermarkets really. Most cities are full of clothes shops.
In smaller towns a decent sized couple of supermarkets can supply us quite well.
Waitrose on Friday evening was a bit zombie apocalypse, but Morrisons was fine - only ran out of loo roll on Saturday afternoon. Everything else (apart from hand wash/gel) looked normal.
Plenty of Calpol in superdrug here. Only bought one bottle, to replace what had run out

Northernlass99 · 08/03/2020 09:42

Im hoping that soon all the panic buyers will have their houses packed full of loo roll and pasta, the supermarkets will restock and we will all be ok again.
Yesterday Superdrug had shelves piled high with all the cold remedies so they are cashing in.
I did buy a few extra tinned soups but trouble with that is I have already eaten them!

catsandlavender · 08/03/2020 10:23

Hardly any medicine at all in B&M yesterday and no anti bac hand wash of any kind. I’m seeing shortages of OTC medicines everywhere as well as anti bac wipes and Dettol.

Jenasaurus · 08/03/2020 10:31

light hearted

what will be the next thing to sell out ?
Aderyn19 · 08/03/2020 10:32

Northern, you are not doing this panic buying properly 😁

Paperdollss · 08/03/2020 10:35

Painkiller rules are only 2 packs of anything.
I tried to buy a few weeks ago calpol as id ran out and 1 pack of paracetomal and 1 pack of Ibuprofen but I had to put the last back as I’d exceeded my limit.

To the poster who mentioned growing own veg, it is a lovely idea but lots of families in my area live in apartments with no green space, my apartment gets hardly any natural light bar an hour or 2 in the morning.
I did try for an allotment space but the waiting list is a few years long Shock

ConfusedDotty · 08/03/2020 10:37

Pet food. Tbh, that's the only thing I would be bothered about. I always have a kitchen full of food and never run out of toiletries.

If a certain brand of cat food run out my two cats with commit mutiny I am sure.

Paperdollss · 08/03/2020 10:49
  1. Liquid caustic acid to unblock all the toilets from all the shits people will be having
  2. Air freshener;see point 1
GinDrinker00 · 08/03/2020 10:52

Milk and bread.

UntamedWisteria · 08/03/2020 10:59

People are stockpiling things with a long shelf-life.

It's a psychological reaction to the stress of Coronavirus and the need to take positive measures.

Not a rational response to what people really might need.

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 08/03/2020 11:13

Balsamic vinegar? I hear the Italian region of Modena is on lockdown...

mummmy2017 · 08/03/2020 11:16

I know people are stockpiling, but at some point they will have no room for more.
Wonder if the supermarkets will over order and then we get some bargains.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 11:23

I’m just relieved I did my prep shopping beginning of February. This is why I acted early because I knew once the herd woke up and started to realise what was coming there would be issues. You look suspect buying 10 UHT milks in one shop now, a month ago it was no problem. Phew!

OneTimePrepper · 08/03/2020 11:32

Prune juice, when these people eating pasta day after day reaise they cant squeeze out a shit.
