Aibu to think this is wrong and opportunistic. Obviously its because of coronavirus. This is so annoying ad I use it regularly as im immunocompromised.

(but in answer to your question, I am currently in Kent, normally in London)

Fandoozle1 · 07/03/2020 20:12

I work in an independent pharmacy and we didn't increase our prices on hand sanitizer, but our boss is quite decent like that and not one to take advantage of people. We cant get any stock in now,alk our suppliers has none left.

Tiffinity13 · 07/03/2020 21:13

I've got a compromised immune system too and use it constantly as a matter of course before going out and while I'm out. I can't get it anywhere and it's worrying. It does help to make me feel safer about touching door handles, rails etc. I use it after washing my hands in public loos too as there's always some dirty bastard who walks out without washing their hands. Time for the added security of opening the door with my top wrapped around my hand 🙄 Ffs, how disgusting are some people? Basic hygiene!!! No wonder diseases spread. Pissed off as I can't get any anti-bac and people who probably never use it are buying it by the box load...grrr!

What is the obsession with alcohol gel? Soap and warm water is as good if not better. You have to wash your hands after 3 uses of alcohol gel, as the build up on your hands makes it less effective. Weird that everyone has latch on to alcohol gel. I work in a hospital and washing your hands, generally is viewed as the best way to clean your hands, with alcohol gel as the next best option. Let them keep their £15 alcohol gel!

Aridane · 08/03/2020 07:12

It’s idiocy and panic

nowlook · 08/03/2020 08:27

If people really want to make an effective hand sanitiser, here's the WHO formulation guidelines. You'll need ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, glycerol and boiled water that's been left to cool down.

Please note I have absolutely no medical training. Not even a first aid certificate.

mindproject · 08/03/2020 08:30

You don't have to pay. Go on eBay and buy one for £2 if you are desperate for the awful stuff.

BeyondMyWits · 08/03/2020 08:31

The obsession with alcohol gel is because "the government" said 60%+ alcohol gel will protect you when you are out and about.

I work in a pharmacy, I have good access to soap and water.

My brother is a bus driver, he does not. Not a lot to understand really. What is he to do? - he has to handle money, to face customers, to clear rubbish from his bus, he can wash his hands in between his 4 hour shifts. He would quite like to wash them after handling money from someone who coughed into it. He can't so he uses gel - when he can get it.

mindproject · 08/03/2020 08:40

People still trusting what the government says - bless.

Why do people continually barrel out with this obsession with telling people to use soap and water... Not everyone has access to soap and water at all times whilst at work

Bus drivers, taxi drivers, people on tills in supermarkets... can’t just wander off and wash their hands

Washing is ideal. Hand gel with high alcohol is a second. It’s better than nothing

NewYearNewTwatName · 08/03/2020 08:58

people understanding of % is truly astonishing. Then they get shirty when pointed out how ridiculous their recipes and maths are.

no arguing with stupid.

I also agree the stupid recipes should be deleted off the thread.

You can make vodka or any other spirit stronger by freezing it and concentrating the liquor left behind.

pushchairprincess · 08/03/2020 09:01

I'd boycott them forever - taking the @@@@ out of consumers. See how they cope with no customers after the virus has been controlled. Disgusting !

ShabbyRobedNun · 08/03/2020 09:44

Rude!

SerendipityJane · 08/03/2020 10:18

Not really. You'd never get to the 60%+ that way.

The maths and science on this thread is pretty pisspoor, I'm afraid.

NormaLouiseBates · 08/03/2020 10:33

I honestly don't understand why the shops/supermarkets aren't limiting these high value items to 2/3 per person Hmm I mean, I know some are but some of the tales on here of people walking out with a whole tray of hand gel or loo roll piled to the top of their trolley show that many are not.

dementedpixie · 08/03/2020 10:50

Ironically my local Morrisons is limiting to 2 per person but had none on the shelf to buy. I have 2 wee bottles but only because I bought them for our holiday last year and didnt use them

chubley · 08/03/2020 11:58

Local chemist had no hand sanitiser but did have liquid soap, dettol and carex, at normal price, £1. Savers also had it last weekend (I bought one at each to have 2 in reserve).

I'd say don't just rely on supermarkets for this and loo roll, etc. Savers and small shops are worth checking out. Agree re wearing gloves out and about.

OneTimePrepper · 08/03/2020 13:05

Have you actually asked them why the price has gone up? Perhaps their supplier has upped the price too?

Banj0girl · 08/03/2020 17:19

I have always kept hand sanitizer with me. I work on the floor of a museum and it can take up to 5 minutes to get to the nearest soap and water. Always handy when spending a day out as well. I have to have it at home as well because we have a toilet with no sink. There is one in the bathroom but that may be occupied !
Luckily I was already well-equipped before Armageddon !
