Aibu to think this is wrong and opportunistic. Obviously its because of coronavirus. This is so annoying ad I use it regularly as im immunocompromised.

I really wish MNHQ would delete some of these ridiculous make-your-own hand sanitiser "recipes". It's dangerous misinformation.

YouokHun · 06/03/2020 18:22

@KaptenKrusty utter rubbish. Are you an essential oils MLM Hun? There are all sorts of nutters flogging their dangerous concoctions that simply won’t work. Thorough and regular washing with soap and water and if not hand sanitiser over +60% alcohol content as mentioned above by the sensible people.

Justaboy · 06/03/2020 18:23

I once was told by a retail store manager, a big store chain, that he thought or knew rather that 90% of the UK public were just stupid.

I think he was right!

SerendipityJane · 06/03/2020 18:24

Sounds like he was a bit young then Grin

Ilovemypantry · 06/03/2020 18:24

Report to Trading Standards, it’s diabolical to be charging that price for hand sanitizer.

Ariela · 06/03/2020 18:25

Are you a regular customer of theirs for that product & your prescriptions etc? If so I'd have a quiet word with them.

Personally I think you'd be better off wearing gloves.

Ariela · 06/03/2020 18:29

Spectacularly missing the point there. No one is saying hand gel is better than soap and water. What they're saying is you need to use gel when you can't use soap & water, i.e. public loos with no soap, on public transport, before eating a bag of crisps etc - basically hand gel is far better than not washing your hands at all.

Nah. Wash hands at home. Then wear gloves to go out. Wearing gloves will remind you not to poke a finger in your eye or mouth or up your nose. Take gloves off carefully on return home /to eat your crisps etc, and store in one place at home so as to avoid contaminating anything else

InTheSummerhouse · 06/03/2020 18:33

Ariela - spot on re gloves.

People make such a fuss.

InTheSummerhouse · 06/03/2020 18:36

Whay is it so wrong? People regularly and quite happily say "Oh but it is cheaper on Amazon" and desert the local retailer who pays decent wages to local people and pays local taxes and Corporation Tax. But hey ho - it's cheaper on Amazon. Supply and demand

StinkyWizleteets · 06/03/2020 18:41

that’s bloody ridiculous. I hope you took your custom elsewhere! We can only make a statement with our cash.

I have to take immunosuppressants - I need hand sanitizer for basic hygiene needs (not virus related ones) and can’t get it anywhere. While I’m also in the high risk category of this virus compared with general population I’m now shafted with basic bacteria too. golf clap

KaptenKrusty · 06/03/2020 18:46

@YouokHun it has bloody vodka in it for fuck sake is that not alcohol?

Anyway you don’t need hand sanitiser - soap and water is better ! Not need for the attack

Cohle · 06/03/2020 18:51

it has bloody vodka in it for fuck sake is that not alcohol?

Two tablespoons of 40% abv? That will do precisely fuck all.

I really hope people don't become seriously ill as a result of following some of this ridiculous advice. People should take some responsibility when they spout dangerous nonsense.

KaptenKrusty · 06/03/2020 18:59

Hand sanitiser isn’t going to save your bloody life either 😂

millimollimandi · 06/03/2020 19:02

They will get their comeuppance - a local petrol station - in the height of the petrol shortage due to blockades - got fuel but hiked the price up to stupid levels - when everything got back to normal they were boycotted and went bust. People aren't stupid...

raeray · 06/03/2020 19:09

Independent pharmacist also London (north/central) selling lidl hand sanitiser the little ones for £12.50 this week!!

Inthemuckheap · 06/03/2020 19:18

It's supply and demand. I run a healthcare company; masks are out of stock everywhere and sanitizer prices and lead times have gone through the roof due to the panic buying by Joe Public. All my suppliers are out of stock.

You need 60% alcohol for it to be effective and it's nigh on impossible to find vodka or other spirits at that strength to mix with aloe vera gel (which is also in short supply).

woodchuck99 · 06/03/2020 19:24

Hand sanitiser isn’t going to save your bloody life either

It will probably save some lives if it means that some people do not transfer viral droplets from their hands to their face.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 06/03/2020 19:26

I'd say fair enough. Price is one way of ensuring that those who value it most get it.

coconuttelegraph · 06/03/2020 19:33

I'd say fair enough. Price is one way of ensuring that those who value it most get it

can you explain how a high price enables the sick and poor to buy something they can't afford?

Cohle · 06/03/2020 19:33

Hand sanitiser isn’t going to save your bloody life either 😂

Yes the NHS are doubtless recommending it when soap and water aren't available just for the fun of it.

Advising people to use some ridiculous essential oil concoction is dangerously stupid advice.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 06/03/2020 19:37

Hi @coconuttelegraph

No it won't help with that.

By the way, for those who want to make their own I understand that methylated spirits is the way forward. It's pretty much 100% alcohol, a mixture of ethanol and methanol, both of which disinfect.

SpeedofaSloth · 06/03/2020 19:42

My local pharmacy was charging £9.99 for a single FFP3 mask which would usually cost £2 at most. Without fit testing they are ineffective anyway.

raeray · 06/03/2020 20:53

There was hand gel for 75p in paddington station boots tonight if anyone needs some - limited to 2 a customer which I think is probably a good idea!

Isla727 · 06/03/2020 23:32

Could you mention that you're immunocompromised and always pay them £2 for your sanitiser? If they have any moral code they might charge the normal cost.

SkelingtonArgument · 06/03/2020 23:41

Vodka is usually 40% ABV which is 80% proof - using this to make your own hand gel with aloe Vera in the ratio on 2/3 vodka to 1/3 gel will result in a product which is 53% alcohol. This is below the recommended 60% minimum
