Aibu to think this is wrong and opportunistic. Obviously its because of coronavirus. This is so annoying ad I use it regularly as im immunocompromised.

I do think the panic buying of hand gel is a bit ridiculous (not you op) and it just allows retailers to charge more. I'm sure last month before corona virus everyone managed to clean or sanitise their hands yet now they're buying buxkets of it. People are wearing face masks about. It's daft and ridiculous - only the very stupid gdg drawn onto the panic. You're far less likley to get it than rlyou are to get run over. Yet people still cross bloody roads

EmmaBridgewater20 · 06/03/2020 23:58

Report them to trading standards - this is illegal

EmmaBridgewater20 · 07/03/2020 00:01

@InTheSummerhouse it’s illegal profiteering. Go have a look at trading standards

BeyondMyWits · 07/03/2020 07:58

so people expect the pharmacy to sell gel for less than it costs them to buy it?

or simply not sell it because it is too expensive?

can't win.

magoria · 07/03/2020 08:01

We buy dettol antibacterial clothes wash for our gym kit. It has gone from £12 for 4 last week to £70+ for 4 this week on amazon.

Stinkycatbreath · 07/03/2020 08:08

Think the science tells us we are better off with soap and water so I wouldn't sweat it. Hand sanitizer on the market is only on average 60% alcohol and the tendency is that with sanitizer you won't be rinsing your hands. Sensible hand hygiene is more effective. But they are wrong for such a mark up.

Ilovemypantry · 07/03/2020 09:32

@hankyspanky
Why did you buy more than you need? It’s this behaviour that makes everyone else panic buy thus depriving others. Pharmacies and supermarkets should limit the amount people can buy to give everyone a chance to keep themselves safe.
In our local supermarket yesterday the shelves were empty of toilet rolls😳 not sure why people think they will go through mountains of loo paper if they get the virus.

Aridane · 07/03/2020 09:48

@Cohle - me too, the ‘infodemic’ (as the WHO describes it) of misinformation and lies

woodchuck99 · 07/03/2020 10:18

No, if a wholesaler has put up the price then they have a defence (and the wholesaler is the one profiteering). Trading standards or the pharmaceutical society can easily investigate this though so it's not a reason to not report.

user1497207191 · 07/03/2020 10:49

When Trading Standards don't even investigate people being scammed out of thousands, do you really think they'll care about hand gel being a few pounds more than normal.

SerendipityJane · 07/03/2020 12:22

Vodka is usually 40% ABV which is 80% proof - using this to make your own hand gel with aloe Vera in the ratio on 2/3 vodka to 1/3 gel will result in a product which is 53% alcohol.

You what ?!

BubblyBarbara · 07/03/2020 14:29

If I desperately needed something would I rather pay over the odds and get it.. or have absolutely zero chance of getting it? The former. Prices are a good way to ration things in short supply because even if the price is terrible, at least you can get it in an emergency.

Waveysnail · 07/03/2020 15:09

From The Times

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) urged suppliers to act responsibly and said that it was monitoring pricing practices amid shortages of hand sanitisers and face masks.

The watchdog said it would consider any evidence that companies might have broken competition or consumer protection law by charging excessive prices or making misleading claims. It is also considering asking the government to bring in price controls.

SerendipityJane · 07/03/2020 16:58

If I wanted socialist nonsense like that, I would have voted for Corbyn FGS.

TildaKauskumholm · 07/03/2020 17:57

Don't bother with Trading Standards for any of this, they're as useless as other bodies such as of om etc. Save your breath. In times like this there will always be greedy scumbags profiting from others, man in the street or big pharma.

clarehhh · 07/03/2020 18:00

Try online British corner shop I bought some from there.Rationed number but normal price.

Aridane · 07/03/2020 18:18

Soap remains cheap and widely available- just saying

Barney60 · 07/03/2020 18:30

Ive just returned from local Tesco, normal price there. Can you shop on line or visit a Tesco or other supermarket?

Dawncleo62 · 07/03/2020 18:31

I’ve made my own by buying 100% rubbing alcohol, decanting to a spray bottle, adding lavender oil & will be adding aloe Vera to conc of 60% when the tub arrives. Got from Amazon. Yes you can use surgical spirit.
Vodka, etc are not over 40% so no good for sanitiser, except in an emergency, if cleaning a cut etc, (yes I know it stings), you know the way they do on adventure/disaster movies.

Where do you live?
Large Sainsbury's here completely sold out of all kinds of soap

Floraflower3 · 07/03/2020 18:35

Jesus Christ some of the maths here 🤦‍♀️

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/03/2020 19:50

Jesus Christ some of the maths here

TBF Jesus divided seven loaves and two fishes between 5000 with leftovers so his maths was pretty shonky.

erniepigy · 07/03/2020 19:56

Boycott them, make it as public as you can locally and then make your own.
Alcohol, aloe Vera gel and essence drops like tea tree.
You can use surface wipes, floor wipes.
Still can’t beat washing your hands.

Aridane · 07/03/2020 20:05

@Largeyellowdaffodil - sounds like your local store must have an inefficient delivery system since it’s freely available on line

I managed to get the last bottle of Carex hand wash today in B&M. Strange times indeed.
