@YouokHun
Rubbish @GlamGiraffe, as others have said this wouldn’t be adequate. You’re not a shill for Forever Living are you? Every time I hear Aloe Vera mentioned I expect an MLM stealth pitch!

I I actually dont understand this. Sorry what's a shill?
I use aloe vera after sun gel from boots (local heath store also sells)and surgical spirit from Sally beauty supplier or boots pharmacy counter, If and when they have it (just over two thirds of a bottle of spirit to gel) its runny compared to the stuff you buy but I cant see why it wouldnt work. I only use it when I'm out with my toddler. The stuff you buy is often 54% so that's not good either is it.
I'd rather wipe my hands with mostly cheap surgical spirit than buy a bottle of sanitiser at a rip off price that's not necessarily effective in strength.
And no I dont sell anything!

hankyspanky · 06/03/2020 17:21

Thank you @Frownette, I was generally just trying to help someone in need with no ulterior motive!!!

Maybe the vitriol should have been used on the person who came and cleared the shelf of 2 whole boxes as I was walking away. I was genuinely lost for words.

OlivejuiceU2 · 06/03/2020 17:23

This is awful. My work has ordered loads for staff so they can have it for free and put loads of dispenses around the building.

Surgical spirit is out of stock everywhere too!

GlamGiraffe · 06/03/2020 17:26

@woodchuck99
My local shop was as fully stocked as ever with surgical spirit yesterday. 99% strength. I live in London, maybe it helps? (although not if you go to buy a packet of penne of spaghetti - no chance)!!

It's out of stock online everywhere. There may be the shop with it in stock that that is true of antibacterial gel as well. The point is it's no easier to get than hand gel now.

Babyg1995 · 06/03/2020 17:28

There was a woman Infront of me in Asda today she had ,30 bottles of the stuff no wonder there's a shortage .

AParallelUniverse · 06/03/2020 17:33

You should report them. Why wouldn't you? Cheeky fuckers only selling to those who have deep pockets. The rest can get sick as far as they're concerned. Bloomin' well report them.

KaptenKrusty · 06/03/2020 17:34

dont buy it! Just make your own!

2 ounce spray bottle
5 drops vitamin E oil (optional, this makes for soft hands!)
2 tablespoons witch hazel with aloe vera or vodka
5 drops lemon essential oil
5 drops orange essential oil
5 drops tea tree essential oil
Distilled (or at least filtered, boiled, and cooled) water

Instructions
In the spray bottle, combine the vitamin E oil, witch hazel or vodka, and essential oils. Place the sprayer on tightly and shake well for 15-20 seconds to combine.
Open the bottle, and fill to the top with water. Replace sprayer, and shake again for 15-20 seconds. Done!

AParallelUniverse · 06/03/2020 17:34

Did they actually let her buy it? People are so bloody selfish.

woodchuck99 · 06/03/2020 17:38

@KaptenKrusty what percentage alcohol would your recipe be?

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/03/2020 17:42

I have bought 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and aloe Vera with a 70/30 solution. It’s watery as hell but guaranteed effective. Unlike some of these other recipes!

JRUIN · 06/03/2020 17:48

Surely that can't be legal!

DaveTheDesigner · 06/03/2020 17:51

Let them profiteer if they want but when this is all over never ever let them forget what they did. This is when social mefia has it's uses.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/03/2020 17:52

Are you talking to me? Pharmacies and amazon sell it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/03/2020 17:53

Oh no. My bad. The profiteering. Market forces I believe.

mummykauli7 · 06/03/2020 17:54

Hi everyone. Just wanted to offer a different perspective. I work at a pharmacy and recently our supplier increased their price to £9.00 per unit for 57ml of sanitizer. It's most likely that the increase in price is down to the supplier and not the pharmacy itself.

OkMaybeNot · 06/03/2020 17:54

I'm not one for public naming and shaming, usually, but in this case I would be shanaming the fuck out of them.

dustibooks · 06/03/2020 17:55

I work in the manufacturing and engineering trade supply chain. We have been unable to source any sanitiser at the regular price at all. The manufacturers / importers are the ones who have put the prices up. Demand is outstripping supply by a huge margin so at the moment, they can charge what they like.

So if the chemist is selling at that high price it's likely that it is because the wholesale cost to them has rocketed, not because they have decided to cash in.

Mydogatemypurse · 06/03/2020 17:58

This was spoken about in the government briefing re corona. That steps were being encouraged to prevent this. It needs reporting.

Howdy1212 · 06/03/2020 18:00

Maybe its a supply /demand issue. The pharmacy can sell it for a million if they want, pricingis at their discretion.

Is it wrong? Yes, but nowt anyone can do!

woodchuck99 · 06/03/2020 18:07

No they can't. Unless the wholesaler has increased the price the chemist are price gouging which is considered unethical and exploitative. They have to adhere to certain standards and if they aren't doing that trading standards and the pharmaceuticals society would be very interested.

greywalls93 · 06/03/2020 18:08

I was able to pick a couple of bottles up online. £4.50 a bottle and estimated delivery no earlier than mid April!

Jimmers · 06/03/2020 18:10

Patients & visitors are stealing the gel from dispensers in the hospital I work at. Fucking outrageous!

apricotnuts · 06/03/2020 18:14

Firstly, I know soap and water is the best method. I keep reading only hand sanitiser with alcohol 60% or more is effective. However, there do seem to be some hand sanitisers that are as effective that are alcohol free. I have used for a long time ecohydra which says its alcohol free and just as effective as the alcohol based sanitisers at 60% above. Ecohydra supply the NHS so I trust their info on their sanitiser is correct.

I do know if a hand sanitiser is alcohol based it must contain at least 60% or above to be effective.
