There are almost no spare ICU beds in the country. Many ICUs are already running at over maximum capacity and even if they do have beds do not have the nurses to staff them. We do not have the staff or resources to open an additional 100+ ICU beds safely as e.g. Italy have had to.

Kind of off topic but the discussion about how the virus is spread reminded me of a post from a Canadian friend which said something like "I'd rather lick a doorknob in China than vote for Trudeau" Grin

SistemaAddict · 05/03/2020 15:58

@AllTheProsecco I think I'm in the same area. Are you able to say anymore without outing anyone?

Thanks for the transmission info. This is how things get confused as there's mum thinking it has to be via touch because it's not in the air, not realising that coughs and sneezes put it into the air and we then breathe it in. We had a quick infection control lesson in the car so she's more glued up nowSmile

you mean school toilet roll AKA tracing paper

Yes :)

maudspellbody · 05/03/2020 15:59

I work for Birmingham city council and the email we've had says the individual who has tested positive is self-isolating and has only 2 contacts in the city.

My job involves travelling around the city to different schools and families. There is a team of us moving around the city popping in and out of schools and having quite close contact with the children we work with.

I'm wondering what will happen to us as we could be nightmare spreaders!

SistemaAddict · 05/03/2020 15:59

Clued up! Clued, you stupid autocorrect.

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 15:59

Er, er uh, no-no-no. Er definitely not, waff waff, He would call us all Cassandra's after the Greek goddess who was always for telling disaster. Although she could actually see the future but she was doomed that no one believed her,

He likes a mang,Ed Ckassics référence.

NotJustACigar · 05/03/2020 15:59

The London stock market closes at 16:30 so if that's the reason for the delay I guess we have about another half hour to wait.

Gadareen · 05/03/2020 15:59

It's easy to be critical though. I wouldn't like to be in charge which is presumably why you didn't stand for election. However, Boris and co did - so they put themselves there....now they need to do the bloody work they said they wanted to do and run the Country, as in provide leadership !

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 15:59

Mangled classics reference. Bloody autocorrect

SistemaAddict · 05/03/2020 16:00

Thanks ofwarren, that's quite a jump.

cjt110 · 05/03/2020 16:01

another 20 in 24 hours

Letseatgrandma · 05/03/2020 16:02

That’s 25 over the night then really.

pussycatinboots · 05/03/2020 16:02

115

FurForksSake · 05/03/2020 16:02

25 in London, that won't take long to increase. Husband works in CW and I am beginning to hope they start suggesting WFH for all.

FourTeaFallOut · 05/03/2020 16:02

8 new possible community infections.

2004bestyear · 05/03/2020 16:03

115 cases now

Axlcat · 05/03/2020 16:03

Was expecting worse TBH. Can live with that (just!)

kirstinm · 05/03/2020 16:03

Maybe I'm naive but I was honestly expecting a lot more than that.

SnoozyLou · 05/03/2020 16:04

@Kayleigh0589 I'm 24 weeks with a toddler. I didn't take him to nursery on Monday as they'd shut 5 schools surrounding us. Tuesday I relented, then kept him back Wednesday for at least the rest of the week as there are "a number more cases", but no one is saying how many, or giving any kind of specifics anymore. So from the point of view of either picking it up or passing it on, I'm just happier to have him at home.

I have elderly parents who live a way away but I won't be going there for a while. I don't think they'd want me to to be honest!

There's a pretty strong rumour the receptionist at our GP surgery brought it back from hols and went to work all week, which is great, since DP went in to drop off a form. But as long as she had a nice time, that's the main thing 😡

Don't know how far I'll go but I work from home so I can take DS out of nursery a lot more easily than a lot of folks. We grocery shop online and it comes from quite a way away (and everyone has been panic buying here anyway). We're not shopping locally. Just going to wait and see what happens but it's driving me a bit nutty too!

flissity · 05/03/2020 16:04

I was also expecting a higher number. Have they alwasy done the regional breakdown?

kirstinm · 05/03/2020 16:04

haha great minds @Axlcat :-)

Eeyoresstickhouse · 05/03/2020 16:04

So 25 new cases. That's not an horrendous jump to be fair. I was expecting it in the 80s +
