Never

Wow. That's a very powerful speech.
I've just been covering speech writing with students.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 21:48

Has anyone matched up who advice and what gov is doing?

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 21:48

Also does anyone know what happens pay wise (hourly min wage) if you place of work has to close for a few weeks

Only 8 of us in total, small shop

idonttrustboris · 05/03/2020 21:49

Why can't school be optional and down to parents discretion as a compromise?

Many people could keep children at home and nhs staff could still send them in with core staff operating?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 21:50

111 policy about referrals comes from the head of the service, who will follow the policy / orders of the Health Secretary

I don't understand why the referrals are so restrictive
It would seem an obvious control measure to identify possible new cases

Is it lack of testing capacity - in which case resources must be found asap -
or just not wanting to find out the scale of the problem ?

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 21:50

I feel it's like a game of 'chicken', or who blinks first,

Will you take your kids out of school, cancel the event or refuse to go to work before the government orders you to?

If it's a government order they have to pay up for damage to business but if it's your )choice' not to work it's your problem and you will lose pay or get fined accordingly.

Fourducksate · 05/03/2020 21:50

The Who statement came over as a criticism of what action has been taken, or not taken, to me too. The first thing I thought after reading it.

What concerns me, is that this thread is a very small group of people compared to the population, yet in it we hear about the misinformation from those in authority, doctors that don’t know procedures, 111 telling people who are poorly and could well have cv now, but are not testing. It is extremely likely it is bring passed within the UK and may have been for some time, so those who are poorly should get tested. Then we have tests going missing!

We are also hearing of people returning from infected countries, going about their normal day, visiting care homes etc.

If this is just a small sample group, what the hell is going on in the wider population?

I think that scares me more than anything even those who say ‘it’s just the flu’!

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 05/03/2020 21:51

Glad to have a waterproof phone, mine has been having a wash every time I've done my hands. Also been antibaccing it.

Well today I've been on multiple buses, into the JCP, and into a few shops. If it's in the community- I've definitely got it now. Keep telling myself this tight chest is just anxiety though! Grin

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 05/03/2020 21:51

@GPwife2411 @BigChocFrenzy yup, the pods (or PICAS) portacabins are by invitation only. Patients who ring 111 and meet the travel/contact history for testing are patched through to a dedicated direct line in the hospital. The hospital take their details and give them a slot for testing. In my hospital the pod is staffed for just 4h a day. Appointments are 30m so 8 per day. Patient enters the pod at the alloted time, uses the phone to call the nurse. Nurse enters in full PPE, takes a clinical history and swabs the patient. There is then time to sanitise the pod before the next arrival.

Wehttam · 05/03/2020 21:52

Hi all, am I the only one who wants a full travel ban implemented before the Easter break?

I think a lot of selfish reckless individuals will be putting people’s wellbeing at risk by taking unnecessary chances and could exasperate the situation further unless severe measures are enforced.

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 21:53

idonttrustboris I agree and I know that many people would be happy to help out and co ordinate childcare, shift patterns etc

If we were allowed the option now then people could actually forward plan but in the current climate where, as I said earlier a team member was still saying to me that it’s just a cold, my company isn’t taking it seriously and there’s no plans

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 21:53

WHO is careful to say each country and epidemic is different, They don't openly criticise and there is politics at play here too.

They have no real authority but will strongly criticise countries who are not in line with their advice.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 21:54

Fais.

I'm not worried about taking dc out of school, I'm worried about loosing my job to do it.

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 05/03/2020 21:55

Also, re:pods, the appointments could be booked up days in advance. In the meantime patients are self isolating at home (we hope). We need to increase testing capacity but don't have any more space and are reliant on nurses from other wards/areas volunteering to staff the PICAS (when I say volunteer, I mean to leave their clinical areas, not that they are working without pay)

NeverSurrender · 05/03/2020 21:55

Absolutely no one on my Facebook feed or in real life is talking about it, it's surreal. It's like I'm in a bubble! Admittedly there have been no confirmed cases in our area yet - Lincolnshire, but it's only a matter of time. The only signs of it are a complete lack on anti abc hand gel! We've heard nothing from work either about any plans if things get worse and we would be significantly impacted with staff shortages etc.

Acrasia · 05/03/2020 21:56

@georgeggg the majority of the German cases are linked to a town in Nord Rhein Westphalia, where an infected man attended an event for Karneval. The town is currently quarantined until at least 15th March.

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 21:56

Wehttam Totally agree but I feel like this won’t happen because they are focused on money

CallmeAngelina · 05/03/2020 21:56

Now it's here in the community, how can they justify only testing people who have a travel history?

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 21:56

four duck

I feel the same and yet this confusion and mis information is replicated at work.

GPwife2411 · 05/03/2020 21:57

@tobermoryisthebestwomble - thanks for the confirmation. Although I wish it wasn't true. This chap did everything right, DH agreed he was a candidate for it (v v relevant travel history although not quite right for 111's purposes) and the guy didn't come into the surgery to protect other people. I do hope that he at least went to A&E after he got turned down by 111 for CV assessment :( - he sounded properly unwell.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 21:57

A holiday ban would have the airlines, hotels, resorts, travel agencies, insurance companies ..... screaming
A lot of bankruptcies too, lost jobs, lost taxes, lost GDP

Any country would have to be in a real emergency to have the stones for that
That's something we can't blame Boris for not doing

myrtleWilson · 05/03/2020 21:58

@Springinsight your insinuation that the CMO can't do his job because he 'doesn't have a family' is outrageous

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 21:58

The biggest political cost would be people deprived of their entitlement to a holiday abroad - the polls would plummet

SistemaAddict · 05/03/2020 21:59

Evening all. I'm just settling in after a very good parents evening. I was not happy being with that many people at all. I've no chance of catching up on the thread properly but understand there has sadly been a death in the UK and that we now have 116 cases?

The message from WHO is very clear but I doubt BJ will take any notice.

I tried to call my college earlier but no answer. I wish someone would take some decisive action.

I'm going to discuss with mum tomorrow a plan for if either of us get ill. She's my only childcare if I get ill and that worries me as she's not really able to cope with all 3 of them. Not for long anyway.

fezzesarecool · 05/03/2020 22:00

BigChocFrenzy Even if he said to restrict unnecessary travel it would be something

But because nothing’s been said everyone’s going la la la, it’s completely safe as there’s no ban
