@CallmeAngelina I’ve read that face masks are only recommended for people who are already infected (or suspected to be). It’s said they offer little to no protection for the uninfected.

middleager · 05/03/2020 22:01

Matt Hancock on QT tonight
(And Layla Moran 🤣)

BigChocFrenzy · 05/03/2020 22:01

"He also doesn't have a family."

Totally irrelevant
Just like Boris's private life is not relevant to his job as PM

furrytoebean · 05/03/2020 22:01

I think the WHO are talking to America with that speech too.
Trump is being particularly unhelpful saying that their death rate was wrong and it's much lower.

FaisPasCiFaisPasCa · 05/03/2020 22:02

Yes def America too

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 05/03/2020 22:05

This is probably a ridiculously stupid question - but why are those with nearly the right travel history who are being fobbed off not just lying about it? Do you have to prove it?

ChipotleBlessing · 05/03/2020 22:05

The WHO aren’t talking about the UK FFS. Our approach is fully in line with their protocols. They’re talking about places like the US, with virtually no testing done, and Egypt which claims to have one case but has been in the travel history of multiple cases in other countries. And as for deciding the CMO can’t do his job?! Please do list your public health qualifications and maybe you can be his replacement.

Abraid2 · 05/03/2020 22:05

So as CMO we need an emoting father who shuts the whole country down.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 22:06

Big choc on still waiting for your evidence to link Boris turned down Chris whittams humanitarian approach to follow his own economic one.

Wehttam · 05/03/2020 22:06

Bigchoc it would be a catastrophic shock to everything involved in travel agreed, but I feel without one it could have a wider effect across the nation should this get out of control. We have very few cases already and the shops are very quiet, so whilst many people we may know IRL are in denial there’s a large amount who are taking the news seriously. It’s the lesser of two evils I suppose.

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 22:08

Can I join? The preppers forum don't like the harsh reality of an actual apocalypse

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 22:08

Abraid, it's confusing. I thought Chris the expert had laid out a who directive following humanitarian, save lives approach which has apparently personally been turned down by Boris?

Rejected to save money for his rich tory friends?.. I'm confused Confused

Greenbutterlfy566 · 05/03/2020 22:08

Child at alderhey hospital confirmed

Wehttam · 05/03/2020 22:11

Welcome Witch don’t go to apocalyptic as it’s a bit of a sore subject here but if you’re good at the power of suggestion you’ll fit in just fine. 😄

@CrunchyCarrot whilst the debunked Indian scientists are retracting their paper to revise and re-release, there is also this latest comment from a researcher doing the rounds... similarities in the effect on the body this time, not just the structure of the virus.

“The influence of COVID-19 on the human body is like a combination of SARS and AIDS as it damages both the lungs and immune systems,” Peng Zhiyong, director of the intensive care unit of the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in Wuhan, told the Global Times.

www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/chinese-doctors-say-coronavirus-like-a-combination-of-sars-and-aids-can-cause-irreversible-lung-damage/news-story/f58f19c5eeae99b845c54e2d2b9305ca

Certainly sounds dramatic! Doesn’t give much further info without linking to the actual paper tho...

ClientQueen · 05/03/2020 22:12

I have an appointment in 2 weeks at the Macmillan centre at hospital. It's an urgent one as I have to go every 10 weeks for bloods and also to get my injection prescription. I'm hoping the hospital will be shit hot on this given its the cancer centre

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 22:13

chip

I'm not saying he can't do his job. I'm just remembering my experience talking to medics laden with academic titles when df was dying... They were clinical, cold, dismissive and scientific.

Do I want that kind of person deciding my fate? Choosing when my dc can be kept off school and when I aim allowed to look after them without fear of loosing my job? Maybe this is what Boris was alluding to?

Maybe Chris said.... Let it runs its course... And Boris said... No... There is a balance?

Who knows?

Whoever said its a game of chicken.. It certainly is.

Exochord · 05/03/2020 22:13

My DSis employer is already experiencing a downturn in sales as people’s priorities shift. She said they’ve cancelled a job offer because they no longer need an additional salesman until sales pick up again. Economic consequences kicking in!

NeckPainChairSearch · 05/03/2020 22:14

Come on, Spring. Agree with them or not, posters don't have 'produce evidence' to back up a belief or POV.

croon979 · 05/03/2020 22:15

I have dipped in and out of these threads and not read every single post so apologies if this has been posted before but I found Chris Whitty’s interview with the select committee informative and it made me feel much calmer. Can access it on this link (quite long)

I wouldn't have thought you have to prove it but I wouldn't lie because I am also aware that the nhs is incredibly overwhelmed and I would hate to clog up a system if they DO have a reason for doing it the way they do.

I think this is a wider problem in the nhs in general, we get given two completely contradictory messages all the time.

  1. the nhs is on its knees due to people coming in with sniffles; stay at home unless it's an emergency. Flu can be bad but there's nothing we can do, stop clogging up beds.

  2. SEPSIS KILLS FAST if you have any of these symptoms go to a&e immediately and don't take any risk.

As a result I feel like I don't want to bother them, which is very frustrating as this is my health and actually if I look at it logically I'm not being dramatic. I would be happy to pay for a test myself.

NEW: French lawmaker Jean-Luc Reitzer has tested positive for coronavirus and is seriously ill - BFMTV

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 22:16

Thanks @Wehttam Lots of chat, I like itSmile

Furfockssake · 05/03/2020 22:17

Just heard that two children from my DS school are at home being tested after being in Italy at half term. Assuming they are only being tested if with symptoms?

myrtleWilson · 05/03/2020 22:17

@Springinsight It's really not confusing for most people (although you seem to be struggling). the CMO is responsible for directing health advice for the population. His status as father, orphan, uncle, child... really doesn't come into it.
