We are intending to have some delay of about 24 hours to be absolutely sure we’ve got the details right. I think we do intend to continue with these geographical things. And in fact, in due course, will use maps and other things to enhance that.”

Whitty also said the UK has mainly moved into the “delay phase” of tackling the virus, meaning measures to tackle the disease would be stepped up.

We will get location updates again. From guardian article.

Coronavirus UK: government U-turns on plan to stop daily location updates

He said: “We have moved from a situation where we are mainly in ‘contain’, with some ‘delay’ built in, to we are now mainly ‘delay’,” he said, although elements of the contain process remained in place.

We have moved from a situation where we are mainly in ‘contain’, with some ‘delay’ built in, to we are now mainly ‘delay’

I wonder if this will affect Crufts, given one of the strategies for delay is stopping large gatherings of people.

Furfockssake · 05/03/2020 10:43

He told BBC Breakfast the government was “learning every day” and was looking at a “tech solution” to keep the public informed about the spread of the disease out of everything that has been said and done so far this is what concerns me the most. Our country is supposed to have a pandemic preparedness plan - why are they ‘leaning every day’?! All of this should have been modelled and sorted decades ago.

QueenofmyPrinces · 05/03/2020 10:44

I have just tried to talk to my husband about our upcoming holiday to Turkey and he said, “We are going. End of.”

BrokenBrit · 05/03/2020 10:46

@queenofmyprinces I wouldn’t be happy to be dismissed like that. Is your husband usually not willing to listen or compromise?

Very few people shaking hands or touching in any way at parents evening last night. God only knows why they didn't offer skype appointments (which would be better in this day and age anyway given how busy people are)

587 new cases and 28 new deaths in Italy. Total: 3,089 and 107 deaths
Among the 2,706 active cases, 1,344 (50%) are hospitalized, 295 of which (representing 11% of active cases) are in intensive care.
Among the 383 closed cases, 276 (72%) have recovered, 107 (28%) have died.

Italy's stats as of yesterday. Not looking good at the moment.

Number12 · 05/03/2020 10:54

Im very relieved they will be updating locations. Parents evening using skype is a fantastic idea.

My school WiFi is atrocious and we don’t all have work laptops-I can’t seem how that would work.

pussycatinboots · 05/03/2020 10:56

Queen I suggest he is going. End of. and don't bother coming back

Cheeseismylife · 05/03/2020 10:56

I'm still not sure if I should stock the cupboards. I have a fair amount of dried stuff and tins anyway, probably not far off enough for 2 weeks. But no meat/fish/tofu and I've got no room in the freezer to buy and freeze.
I'd happily eat veggie for a few weeks but the kids would be far from impressed.

Cheeseismylife · 05/03/2020 10:57

Blimey, Italy figures are really not great.

HasaDigaEebowai · 05/03/2020 10:57

I think anyone not stocking the cupboards if they can afford to is not acting very logically.

No downsides, only upsides

ajandjjmum · 05/03/2020 10:58

I really think we can't look too far ahead. We are currently scheduled to fly out to Australia at the beginning of April, to see our son. My view is largely that we would be flying from the situation here to a very similar one there, so if the plane goes, we'll be on it.

But things could change enormously, and it is really pointless to start worrying too far ahead. Need to take it day by day, week by week. I wouldn't expect anyone to be cancelling Easter clubs yet - although it may well be necessary nearer the time.

auslass · 05/03/2020 10:58

"I think one of the great things about the British public is that they can see, we can all see, very clearly what the balance of risk is" BoJo.

BoJo doesn't have a mumsnet account then...

On more positive news, it's reported that fresh cases in China are slowing all the time - in fact I belive Korea now has more new ones than they do

Let's just hope our own containment procedures lead to a similar outcome before too long ...

peridito · 05/03/2020 10:59

So the gov is going to go back to reporting the area where the affected person is ,but need a 24 hour delay to be sure the report is correct ?

But yesterday they were telling regions when there was a confirmed case .So yesterday they didn't need a 24 hour delay ,but today they do ?

Makes no sense to me .

Cheeseismylife · 05/03/2020 11:00

I wonder if BoJo has 2 weeks food and bog roll prepped...
