That's spot on Red and a huge concern. The Diamond Princess for example - the workers were placed in a much more difficult situation than the guests. And look at all the job losses from Flybe which I know wasn't wholly caused by the coronavirus but is a sign of probable things to come. My sister who lives with us works in a busy shop and I'm fully aware of the risks that poses.

I do think though that having those who can work from home do so would help everyone... the trains world be less busy, fewer people would get sick at once, etc. At least here in the UK everyone has healthcare. It's awful to think of the people in the States and elsewhere who don't.

frumpety · 05/03/2020 09:58

Blueberryham depends on where they are travelling to ? how they are travelling ?

WaterSheep · 05/03/2020 09:58

Blueberryham

It's the same here, and unless people are able to get their money back they are likely to travel abroad.

In addition to this, a lot of Easter egg hunts, and Easter holiday clubs are running. Which will bring groups of people together.

picklemewalnuts · 05/03/2020 10:01

Presumably those of us who have the option to social distance, should?

If everyone who can work from home and avoid public transport and big gatherings does, that will slow it down for those who can't.

I'm not sure why we don't ask people to do that. Have I misunderstood risk? If DH goes to the office once a week instead of four times a week (huge office building, crowded public transport) surely that not only reduces his personal risk, but also reduces spread?

picklemewalnuts · 05/03/2020 10:02

Huh. Typed too slow. All been said already!

Alone07 · 05/03/2020 10:02

UK at 90 cases now as Scotland has 3 more.

"Maybe if they hurry up and get on with it we won't see an Italy-type situation here."

Totally

Some of you may remember on a much earlier thread I posted to say my 13 year old son was skiing in North Italy over half term (not zone 1) flying from Verona.

The Official advice was only issued on the Tues after half term and headteacher guidance to parents on the Tuesday after children had been in school for a day. It stated that if you had been to a zone 2 and were otherwise healthy there was no need to self isolate. This is what we did, follow advice.

On Friday we received an all parent message to say a couple of students were self isolating and being tested. This information went out to all parents, so the parents of those skiing did not know.
To complicate matters, there had been a Noro outbreak on the trip and half the group got it (not my son, though his room mate did).

We've heard nothing since and students have been swimming, carrying on as normal.

Yesterday, my other 13-year-old son (different school) came down with what appears to be a normal cold, temperature of 38. He's asthmatic and colds go to his chest/lungs but so far main symptoms are runny nose, tiredness, slightly sore throat but no cough or breathing issues yet.

He's off school.

Would you be concerned? (Obviously I am) Would you seek advice? As I say, in normal circumstances it appears to be a cold.

unluckyagain · 05/03/2020 10:05

I don't agree with all of your posts Red but you are spot on with the comments about the impact on people economically. I'm self employed and face not earning any money for at least the next few weeks, possibly months. I can afford to live off my savings in the short term if I tighten my belt hugely but others are not so fortunate. It's tough and I'm anxious for the future but I'll be fine. Others won't.

And there's an ongoing impact - if I earn less this year I'll be paying less tax next year, which will result in less money going into funds for services, the NHS etc. Funds will be depleted by many unable to work and contribute and this will have an ongoing impact.

It's very easy for people in comfortable positions to sit back and stock up and say what others should do. For those less fortunate their position becomes more frightening by the day.

frumpety · 05/03/2020 10:05

There are no guarantees that there will be no travel restrictions in 4 weeks or being particularly morbid , that people will be well enough to travel. Same goes for holiday clubs and events.

We simply do not know where we will be in 4 weeks time.

picklemewalnuts · 05/03/2020 10:09

Middleager, as your DS has a runny nose, and things tend to go to his chest, I'd say a normal cold.
What I've read suggests achey muscles and temperature, then cough.

That said, I'd probably try and contain him anyway as far as possible, just in case. I've ordered my inhalers, so we don't run out with heavy use.

Newjez · 05/03/2020 10:10

@Spacecadetagain

I remember getting pneumonia all too well.
I was ill in bed and burning up. I knew I needed paracetamol, but I couldn't get out of bed. It wasn't that I was too tired. My temp was over 40. I was lucid enough to realise I was in trouble. But I couldn't get enough air, and I physically couldn't get out of bed. Tried to call my wife, but she couldn't hear me. Texted her I needed paracetamol and water. When she came up, one look at me and she panicked and made an emergency appointment with the doctor. Paracetamol took the edge off enough to get to the doctor. It was on a weekend. Double pneumonia. The antibiotics kicked in pretty quick. But without antibiotics, I would have been in trouble.

Fourducksate · 05/03/2020 10:10

@furrytoebean. They probably think that you just don’t want to go because of the cv situation.

middleager · 05/03/2020 10:15

Thanks.
Yes I collected his inhalers a couple of weeks ago fortunately.

I just hope I did the right thing sending my other son in on the first Monday back. At the time there was no guidance and on the Tuesday both the official guidance and the headteacher stated that only people who had been to zone 1 or zone 2 (and were showing symptoms) should self isolate. The head specifically said that if children were well then it was business as usual.

We were not told about Noro (the children told us - the hotel was in the news too because of it) and the headteacher only told us about the self isolating students being tested on the Friday (it appeared in the news first though!)

Bluebelle32 · 05/03/2020 10:18

Starting to get a bit stressed now as I have an underlying condition. It’s bad enough when you have to worry about getting seriously ill. It’s much worse when you are also worried that there won’t be an adequate standard of healthcare available.

Blueberryham · 05/03/2020 10:18

Flying abroad. Going to theme parks etc.

furrytoebean · 05/03/2020 10:19

Her account may have been hacked as a joke

Definitely hasn't she was doing an instagram live about it.
I think in her world it's a normal thing to think because she wasn't embarrassed or shy about it at all.

BrokenBrit · 05/03/2020 10:21

Wonder what Crufts will bring in terms of increasing infection rates.
Many dog show people are older Sad.

Spacecadetagain · 05/03/2020 10:24

@Newjez it’s awful isn’t .. it took me months to recover

WaterSheep · 05/03/2020 10:24

Wonder what Crufts will bring in terms of increasing infection rates.

I guess only time will tell. But a large group of people, many traveling from across the world certainly isn't going to help contain the numbers.

I suppose a lot will reason that there's nothing wrong with going, as if there was an increased risk it would have been cancelled.

Furfockssake · 05/03/2020 10:24

Cases will rise, someone will die and then people will begin to believe it’s not just a load of hype and start to take preventative measures to stop themselves getting it - including not travelling

Furfockssake · 05/03/2020 10:27

I had to lay out the figures for a relative over 60 to get them to see why scientists and WHO are making such a big deal out of it, and why they really just follow advice and stay out of harm’s way. My DH parents, both over 70, live abroad in a tourist spot and have absolutely no intention of distancing themselves socially 🤷‍♀️ My DH is very concerned

BrokenBrit · 05/03/2020 10:27

I find it so depressing we have learnt nothing from other countries dealing with the outbreak.

auslass · 05/03/2020 10:30

@WaterSheep re working from home I agree! I'm almost always at home because of the nature of my role and hours, I go in once a week at best.

I noticed though that a lot of UK managers prefer line of sight management style. I'm Aussie and was based in Sydney before moving, and working from home was completely fine always, just had to make sense with your role and responsibilities.

If its an option people should be doing it. I think especially as cases pick up. It will slow spread.
