Are people with the coronavirus being told to keep silent? I can't see how they can stop them from telling people and therefore it will get out in to public knowledge anyway!
I know if I had it, I'd be telling all family and friends especially in case I may have passed it on!

FelicityFebruary · 04/03/2020 15:33

Revolutionofourtime.

That's so interesting.

But depressing as a UK citizen.

KOKOagainandagain · 04/03/2020 15:34

Or maybe there is a stark choice

  1. draconian measures and 13%

  2. minimal measures and maybe up to 80%

Guess which one we are going for.

Oakmaiden · 04/03/2020 15:35

@RevolutionofourTime

Also the population of Italy is older....

Justyou · 04/03/2020 15:35

My ds has just came home from school saying one is confirmed in the north east area, he was unsure where exactly though

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 15:36

Do you know, I may be jaded by politics but I'm not even that shocked that they're going to knowingly withhold info. I've said for some time now that this will conveniently bring down the care and benefits bill, either by sanctions for non attendance (imagine how many on ESA for anxiety/Mental Health issues will be shitting themselves even if they aren't in quarantine) or by the sick and elderly passing away due to the underfunding of the NHS.
Yes that is a big statement to make but look at who is running the country. That party have been told by all manner of agencies that their benefit assessments and sanctions have led to massive poverty, homelessness and death. They know the cuts have left the NHS in peril.
They do not care and despite the fact we had the chance to get rid, the majority decided to vote for more of the same as they vote for their political parties like they vote for XFactor.
I don't even think I would be worrying so much if we weren't under a Tory government.
Let's be frank- they won't have to wade through what's left of acute NHS services. They have private independent healthcare.

Anyway I digress, and it's just my opinion. Not designed to scare but I'm going stir crazy.

If HK can lost so much detail with the level of cases they have, why can't ours? Or more to the point, why won't they?

Beyond Flowers

If anyone is interested, the course of the Swine Flu epidemic in 2009 is shown here, the graph clearly shows the double peak. More than one 'wave' or peak could be expected with COVID-19, I heard that mentioned this morning.

Greendayz · 04/03/2020 15:37

revolution I think it means it's been going on Italy for a little longer. They're just ahead of SK

middleager · 04/03/2020 15:38

One of the Diamond cruise ship patients, Alan Steele, from Wolverhampton, recovered but his wife was with him (a mental health care worker). No updates on either of them though.

Banana0pancakes · 04/03/2020 15:38

@Justyou there was an article in the evening Chronicle saying a family in Kenton, near Newcastle, were being tested, I was waiting to see if they were confirmed today. That's the only one I've heard of up here potentially

BigChocFrenzy · 04/03/2020 15:38

"We have a right to know so we can adjust our behaviour. So cases in my town I would avoid shops, pull kids out of school etc."

You've just explained why the govt doesn't want you to know

YoursTunbridgeWells · 04/03/2020 15:40

@BeyondMymymymyCorona Re; Immunosuppresants - depends which ones you are on. The tablets I stopped in June/July take 6 months to get out of your system. I had one injection in October/ November and for other reasons hadn't restarted. Definately not restarting now.

Newleafinspring · 04/03/2020 15:40

'@Oakmaiden Wuhan has 15 million people, and around 50k cases, it i around 0.33% infected.

I don't know why UK estimate 60% infected , is this government's plan, just let people catch it.

FelicityFebruary · 04/03/2020 15:41

@Newleafinspring, it's very depressing, always reactive, never bothering to curb people because we can't be like China. I get it but think its pathetic and a shameful lack of leadership.

GorkyMcPorky · 04/03/2020 15:42

@Oakmaiden, China locked down extensively. That isn't happening here.

Youngatheart00 · 04/03/2020 15:42

It’s clearly Economy > Public Health

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 15:43

I don’t think it’s a big surprise that they change reporting now. I agree with pp Dominic

NettleTea · 04/03/2020 15:43

@Oakmaiden - but is the 13% of the population not because everyone took things REALLY seriously right from the start - everyone wearing masks, or facing trouble from police, most streets practically deserted, lots of works and schools shut down, and anyone with the slightest sign of infection on very strict isolation

MrHodgeymaheg · 04/03/2020 15:45

Sorry if this has been posted before, but could someone tell me where I would find a UK map detailing the Covid-19 cases? The only ones I find on newspaper subscriptions I am not signed up to.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 15:48

6 people positive for #coronavirus in #NY Now

Banana0pancakes · 04/03/2020 15:49

I don't know everyone else's opinions on China's numbers but I highly doubt they are only dealing with 0.33% of the population being infected in wuhan purely because of the scale they've gone to to contain it.

Newleafinspring · 04/03/2020 15:49

It is 0.33% in Wuhan, and around 0.005% in China as a whole country.

Why we take 80%?

Quartz2208 · 04/03/2020 15:49

keepon (1) only works though if every country does (1) and that is never going to happen so its not eradicated.

Swine flu is interesting because it shows the stark reality of the difference between this and the flu - vaccinations. We vaccinate all of the groups that are hit the hardest here. We do this because we know the rate would be higher if we didnt.

So the frightening thing is how far we are behind on getting a vaccination out

RevolutionofourTime · 04/03/2020 15:50

@Greendayz butin that case, Italy should have more cases than SK, yet they have far fewer cases.

It’s all a bit mysterious to me. Every country has their own protocol for when they will offer the test. Which makes it hard to assess how many cases there really are.

@BiBiBirdie, HK ‘only’ has 104 cases. The UK is catching up fast. Although we’re getting 4 plane loads of Wuhan evacuees this week, so the numbers will likely go up. Among the evacuees are 14 pregnant HK women, which the government has not seen fit to help until now. 🤬
