Do you know if it’s safe to open a parcel from Japan?
It just arrived.
It traveled 8 days in a post. I read the virus would die after certain time but any scientists here as I read it dies after 12 days.. I’m scared to opened it.

gladysinthepicture · 04/03/2020 14:55

what exactly is the petition wording? (i don`t sign blind)

OptimisticSix · 04/03/2020 14:56

@unluckyagain I have barely seen any evidence of catastrophising and panic, just people trying to prepare which seems sensible. If I knew that it was definitely in my town I could keep my children home which could help stop the spread. They do so many clubs and mix with so many people that this would just be practical.

Konicek007 · 04/03/2020 14:56

Czech Rep has 3 more new cases..just announced

Faybian · 04/03/2020 14:57

Man just arrived to mend the washing machine and he has a nasty dry cough!! I am hiding upstairs but my husband who is working from home is chatting to him. I think the English are too polite to deal with this situation.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 04/03/2020 14:57

They will soon realise that the media will make up numbers by hunting for cases if they don't keep it transparent.

That will fuel conspiracy theories and panic.

I bet this will be retracted pdq.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/03/2020 14:57

But they are knowingly putting vulnerable groups at risk if they don’t share locations so people can avoid?

Why are they doing this? Why are they being so callous?

SirVixofVixHall · 04/03/2020 14:57

I can’t find the petition, could we have a link please ?

Hugglespuffed · 04/03/2020 14:57

Can someone try linking the petition please? I'm clicking but it doesn't seem to be a link!

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 14:57

So far we’re just hand washing more and longer, but I do wonder at what point Dh should consider working from home along with the rest in his office.

BackInTime · 04/03/2020 14:57

@BiBiBirdie People who travelled to Italy in half term would not have been aware of the risks at that point there were little or no cases. These only started emerging at the end of half term. Let's also remember that Italy banned direct flights from China very early on and this obviously did not help at all. Banning all travel worldwide would be pretty impossible.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/03/2020 14:57

I’m not sure that the location information is very informative, really. It’s not real time data and really only helps us assess the risk we were in a few days ago.

And people don’t stay in one place, so a confirmed case in South Manchester may have been somewhere else entirely in the days leading up to diagnosis.

gladysinthepicture · 04/03/2020 14:58

85......I think the shit is about to hit the fan

and I do think the public should know where cases are (at least in a rough area!!!!!!). Then we as people can decide for ourselves whether or not to hunker down/ step up hygiene etc etc.

as I said before, the govenment know far more....I see a repeat of Italy

confusedandtired99 · 04/03/2020 14:59

The wording I think:

Include locations of latest Coronavirus cases daily. Once a week is not enough!

Tell the public where the latest Coronavirus cases are. Once per week is simply not enough

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 14:59

As of today, due to the number of new cases, we will no longer be tweeting information on the location of each new case. Instead, this information will be released centrally in a consolidated format online, once a week. We are working on this now and plan to share on Friday

middleager · 04/03/2020 14:59

almond can't sign petition at the moment as 'its under review' apparently...

Oakmaiden · 04/03/2020 15:00

Why are they doing this?

Possibly because the nature of modern life means the risk is pretty even everywhere... just because 1 person in Swansea has been diagnosed doesn't mean the risk of catching it there is necessarily any greater than it is in Cardiff...

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/03/2020 15:00

This page, updated in the last hour, implies it will still be updated daily at 2pm. It contains numbers, not locations. www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-information-for-the-public

DontFretJuliette · 04/03/2020 15:00

The petition has been halted.

Worried about coronavirus part 11
hankyspanky · 04/03/2020 15:01

Just tried to sign the petition but get this.....

We’re checking this petition

5 people have already supported Morag Brand’s petition.

We need to check it meets the petition standards before we publish it.

Please try again in a few days.

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 15:01

I don’t think the government know far more - I think the maths is out there for everyone to do. 60% infection rate in the UK with 3.4% fatality rate is 1.3million deaths

Stircrazyschoolmum · 04/03/2020 15:01

Thanks space so if cases there they are contained I guess.

I think the preppers thread said Ark Oval is shut but I haven’t validated it.

Pure speculation (and this is the problem of not telling us!) but imagine some of the cases are in Brighton.. that would imply the incubation period is longer than thought and/or they missed some.

unlucky I’m in London too and agree there’s v little we can do bar carry on as normal. I feel stating where the cases are might encourage the cynics to wash their hands more though!!

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 04/03/2020 15:02

Possibly because the nature of modern life means the risk is pretty even everywhere... just because 1 person in Swansea has been diagnosed doesn't mean the risk of catching it there is necessarily any greater than it is in Cardiff

^ This.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/03/2020 15:03

@WiseUpJanetWeiss

They could give the location, and caveat with what you’ve said. If for example there’s a cluster in X place because many cases are there, that’s going to be a higher rate than Y where one of those people travelled through yesterday.

Having no information means you can’t make even a slightly informed choice.
