I am frustrated with my DD's primary school. They have not taken any active measures to ensure and oversee children wash their hands. For over 3 weeks I've been writing and asking them to get the children to wash their hands before lunch and their response has been that there are posters up to remind the children and that they gave them a talk in assembly (a couple of minutes daughter says - they kept it brief!). The children have been told not to use the toilets during class and have to wait until playtimes to use the Year 1 and 2 toilets (400 children!). They just don't take the responsibility seriously it seems. We have children in the school with immune system issues (including my daughter) and other children receiving cancer treatment. I do feel angry and let down and am aware that this school is by no means an exception. The Department of Education's response was to say it was the Head Teacher's responsibility to interpret the guidelines. On a more positive note the liquid soap has been topped up every day following my letter to the Governors last week. I have been considering, and starting to more seriously think about removing her from school, is this an over-reaction??

SisterAgatha, I agree. I have my own personal worries but am coming to terms with them.

It is important to push back the peak and lower it.

Hence the hand washing. If enough people do it, it will save lives. Weird but true!

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 14:03

It's not an overreaction Alib. I took mine out on Thursday.
He has immune suppression too

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 14:04

I wonder what made them test the Pomeranian?

Furfockssake · 04/03/2020 14:05

I think people should be a lot more worried about what is likely to happen. The government said infection rate won't go above 80%. With a population of 66.44m, and a 60% infection rate and 3.4% fatality rate (understand that likely to be on the high side but it's the stat from WHO) that's over 1.3m deaths in the UK alone. Why don't people take it seriously? I'm not being alarmist, I've just taken what the government have told us about likely to move beyond containment stage, and then worked out what that may mean? Or am I being a complete dunce and missing something?

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 14:05

They can't bail out flybe now surely. They're just the first of many and everyone would then expect a bail out.

LambriniSocialist · 04/03/2020 14:05

I have been considering, and starting to more seriously think about removing her from school, is this an over-reaction??

Yes. A massive one at this stage.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 14:06

UPDATE: Second case of coronavirus found at EU offices in Brussels, according to AFP

Alone07 · 04/03/2020 14:06

My children's school (well the ones in primary) have been pro active with hand washing.
Inbetween using sanitizer when they come into class, before lunch, after PE and when leaving to go home.

Sunny360 · 04/03/2020 14:06

Still waiting for the 2pm update...

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 14:07

Fur you’re not missing anything. No downplaying here.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 14:07

India's coronavirus cases rise to 28, including 16 Italians t.co/9vQFvWw8Qs t.co/hKiYnT4pmP

Alone07 · 04/03/2020 14:07

Have they been late before with the update?

LambriniSocialist · 04/03/2020 14:07

Sorry, Alib I missed the bit where your child has immune issues themselves. That is slightly different then, and obviously it's up to you. I'm sure the school are doing their best in terms of handwashing (it would not be possible to ensure 400 children are washing their hands adequately and unless you are in the school you don't know what it going on anyway).

MabelMoo23 · 04/03/2020 14:09

Still no update yet, been refreshing page but nothing yet

Alib838 · 04/03/2020 14:09

Thanks Felicity February. Did you get a Doctor's certificate or note? My daughter's condition hasn't been diagnosed yet (first Paediatrician appointment on 21st - after 2 month wait), and concerned the school will create if I take her out. They are unhappy with her 'attendance' already even thought it is for medical reasons.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 04/03/2020 14:09

Weird - It's been early every day so far, hasn't it?

RevolutionofourTime · 04/03/2020 14:09

@SouthwarkRoad, until a few minutes ago, the reports on the dog were that it had tested ‘weak positive’ - which was initially thought to mean he had traces of the virus on his hair or nose, but not to have been infected. Like there could be traces of the virus on a door handle for instance (not that I’m comparing the dog to a door handle).

The new report says that the dog is actually infected with the virus.

I predict a lot of dogs in Hong Kong shelters soon... 🙁

QueenofmyPrinces · 04/03/2020 14:10

What does everyone predict in the upcoming weeks?

Me, my husband and our two young sons are due to fly out to Turkey in 5 weeks and I’m feeling very anxious about it.

I’m seriously considering not going but my husband thinks I’m being ridiculous Sad

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 04/03/2020 14:10

Up to 85 in the uk now 😱

FelicityFebruary · 04/03/2020 14:11

Alib that sounds so frustrating. What does the doctor say?

jimmyhill · 04/03/2020 14:11

Up to 85 cases, the largest daily increase so far.

And we're off!

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 04/03/2020 14:11

Was just announced on BBC news channel.

Tonkerbea · 04/03/2020 14:12

Does anyone know the different areas/counties the 85 are from?

Alib838 · 04/03/2020 14:12

LambriniSocialist. I suggested to the Head that instead of doing the daily mile they could do half a mile and use the extra 10 minutes (or 30 minutes if they don't do it) to get the children to line up and wash their hands before lunch.. Really, seriously, they are not doing anything to ensure the children are washing their hands.
