A colleague had just returned from the states and has asked to sit near me as there are no hot desks. He has a cough and I declined his offer of a drink but am I overreacting

Ive been expecting the Italian schools announcement. Our local primary were due to go to southern italy as part of erasmus this week - and it was cancelled by the Italian government, i think last thursday.

UK universities postpone graduation ceremonies
Some univeUK universities postpone graduation ceremonies
Some universities have postponed their graduation ceremonies over fears about the coronavirus.
Buckingham University and the University of London said they had taken a "difficult" decision to call off ceremonies this month to minimise the risks to students and their guests.
The University of London said it had expected up to 4,000 people from more than 100 countries - including international students with friends and family - to have attended its 3 March ceremony at the Barbican Centre.
The cancellation covered students distance and flexible learning programmes.

Seems good measures are being taken to minimise risk

BoJoMoFo · 04/03/2020 13:49

Any one else have a feeling today's announcement will be late? Not sure why I feel like that but I do...

SistemaAddict · 04/03/2020 13:52

Wythenshawe is far too close for comfort. We are in the triangle made my Wythenshaw, bury and Buxton. What's been cancelled in the UK?

ClashCityRocker · 04/03/2020 13:52

It will deffo be late purely because I'm waiting for it.

SistemaAddict · 04/03/2020 13:52

Sorry, cross posted there re the cancellations.

Justaboy · 04/03/2020 13:53

I think that whatever BoJo and the goverment do will be either, wrong or too late or not enough, and I can't think Jermy C would make a better job of it!.

TokyoSushi · 04/03/2020 13:53

Hong Kong have just confirmed first case of coronavirus in a dog.

www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3065016/coronavirus-pet-dog-belonging-covid-19-patient

This isn’t an area I understand very well, but just a few days ago there was a UK scientist who said it was akin to impossible for the virus to jump species so quickly.

Juancornetto · 04/03/2020 13:58

@Wehttam eBay posted a message to their sellers on Monday saying that anyone who didn't adhere to the following policy:

"Prices inflated over prevailing market value: listings that attempt to profit from tragedies and disasters (such as the Coronavirus outbreak) are prohibited"

risked having listings deleted and possibly their account downgraded or suspended.

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 13:59

That’s pretty scary about the dog. Maybe dogs were the intermediate animal between bats and humans?

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 13:59

revolution that's absolutely dreadful news!
That has the capacity to change everything for the worse

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 14:00

juan good!

SouthwarkRoad · 04/03/2020 14:00

I thought it was confirmed ages ago that the dog had it tbh

RazzleDazzle26 · 04/03/2020 14:01

My work place which has a confirmed case, only has cold water available to wash hands, they are saying it is not a problem as long as hands are washed with soap the temperature makes no difference.

Is this true, I think apart from anything else you’re not going to wash your hands for long in freezing water...

The part is on order to fix the issue and will take a couple of days to arrive.

AvocadoOwl · 04/03/2020 14:01

Very scary re the dog. I can remember reading something a few weeks back about a lot of dead wild animals being seen in Wuhan; at the time it was put down to all the disinfectant chemicals being sprayed about but it does make you wonder.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 04/03/2020 14:02

Italian schools have not been closed until 15th March.
The TV announced it and all the press but apparently it's now been retracted. The proposal is to do so, but the govt is meeting with the public health and civil protection this afternoon for a final decision.
The kids have gone from euphoric to not and back again about 30 times in the past hour. (Trust me, I've done 5 hrs in an Italian high school and we may as well close as everyone is totally unable to work)

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2020 14:02

Re: Death rate of 3.4%

Something to keep in mind with the statistics of this.

  1. The epidemic is still in its early stages with those who have been affected first often being the most vulnerable in hospitals / care homes etc.

  2. The global death rate isn't necessarily a guide for what will happen in the UK. Currently the death rate in Iran is apparently running at 10%. That will bring the global death rate up.

3.4% figure is not a universal number and will be higher or lower in different places around the world.

NotJustACigar · 04/03/2020 14:02

Much more likely humans were the intermediary between bats and dogs, Chipotle! I'm really hoping this is an anomaly because for one thing I care about animals and for another imagine how absolutely horrible it would be for people if they are asked to give up their dogs SadSad Sad.
