DP is supposed to be attending a European sales meeting at Heathrow next week. About 15 colleagues are due to fly in from around Europe. He contacted a colleague from the Piedmont region of North Italy where the number of confirmed cases is much lower than neighbouring region of Lombardy to ask if he will still be attending. The colleague confirmed he is indeed travelling and then complained that all of the precautions in his country are ridiculously over the top and unnecessary. Even laid back DP was a bit shocked at his blase attitude.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 04/03/2020 11:40

Even at 24 hours, the positives can be reported behind the tests. My musing still stands

MargotB7 · 04/03/2020 11:44

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls

Very blase attitude, it's very selfish as well.

My parents are in Tenerife and have just sent me a text saying what a wonderful time they are having. I really don't want to see them for 2 weeks when they get back. Am I being dramatic?

NEW: First case of coronavirus at the EU offices in Brussels; the European Defense Agency has canceled all of its meetings until March 13 - EURACTIV

NEW: Belgium reports 10 new cases of coronavirus, including the first known instance of local human-to-human transmission t.co/eUoE2b20hL

FourTeaFallOut · 04/03/2020 11:47

Apparently Iran are temporarily freeing 54000 prisoners to stall the coronavirus spread. I don't know how you temporarily free a prisoner, isn't that just called a head start?

onalongsabbatical · 04/03/2020 11:59

Iran is a dire mess. I suspect they're freeing prisoners because they don't want a load of sick prisoners on their hands rather than for any nobler reasons. It's going to be horrible, weakened people leaving prison with the illness and both spreading it and dying in the community.
Please remember Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

All private healthcare staff and facilities should be utilised by the nhs to relieve the pressure on the nhs due to the corona virus ..... any thoughts on this statement? Source - me. Just thinking about the ridiculousness of dragging retired staff back into work ( who are probably old enough to be in a risk group anyway) when you've got all those staff and hospitals there ready to go......

unluckyagain · 04/03/2020 12:04

@MargotB7 - yes you're being dramatic.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 12:07

@MargotB7 no your not being dramatic.
I wouldn't want to see them either

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 12:07

onalong what could possibly go wrong releasing that many criminals. Their society will take years to recover from this. I feel a wave of sadness is going to hit those nations around the world who are unable to deal with this.

sparkly I expect Private healthcare will be commandeered eventually if things warrant such a response. This will be in the plans to come after the first plans set out yesterday go into action. Maybe someone with more knowledge depth can answer whether or not this would have much effect in terms of staff and facilities. Perhaps private hospitals could be used to deal with those not sick with the virus but requiring other medical care (heart attacks, cancer, stroke etc)

MargotB7 · 04/03/2020 12:08

@MargotB7 - yes you're being dramatic.

Thank you, I thought I was.

onalongsabbatical · 04/03/2020 12:10

@MargotB7 doesn't matter if you're being dramatic or not, if you feel safer not seeing them, don't see them. I wouldn't want to.

MargotB7 · 04/03/2020 12:10

@MargotB7 no your not being dramatic.

Thank you Grin

I do feel irritated they flew out after the Hotel CV case was on the news. They are in the same resort. I might not see them.

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 12:12

margot go see them but don’t go inside the house, talk through the glass 😂😂

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 12:12

I wouldn't see them for a couple of weeks either margot and have just had a conversation with my own parents where I've tried to make them understand the risk they are exposing themselves to if they go abroad at the moment (primarily in going through a busy airport, sitting on a plane etc). DM is in her seventies and has poor health and breathing difficulties and sleeps with a CPAP machine.

Their primary argument was - "what are we supposed to do, stay indoors for the next six months?" I understand but there are risks that are proportionate e.g. still sending low risk DC to school and risks that are just not worth taking e.g. elderly parents with breathing difficulties going off on a jolly (6th holiday in less than a year so its not like they're desperate for a break either)

I think I got through...

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 12:14

Perhaps private hospitals could be used to deal with those not sick with the virus but requiring other medical care (heart attacks, cancer, stroke etc)

Most private hospitals use NHS doctors doing private work.

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 12:16

hasa yep I forgot, had a procedure done by nhs staff at private hospital couple of years ago. At least we will have the space though should it be needed and a limited extra private staff.

LarkDescending · 04/03/2020 12:17

IPSOS have published new coronavirus polling results, comparing responses with those polled two weeks ago.

People in the UK are now less likely to think the Government* is doing a good job of containing it (but still think NHS, WHO etc doing a good job).

More likely to be worried about financial impact on themselves.

More likely to think there will be a global recession as a result.

(Oddly) more likely to think the media has exaggerated the outbreak.**

  • NB I don’t know whether they asked about devolved administrations. **Perhaps this is because 2 weeks ago some mainstream media orgs (e.g. the BBC) were giving the virus little coverage.
MargotB7 · 04/03/2020 12:19

margot go see them but don’t go inside the house, talk through the glass 😂😂

Brilliant idea.

I did say that when they get back I would get supplies for them and leave it on their garden. They will think I'm being horrible but it was there choice to put themselves at risk.

DressingGownofDoom · 04/03/2020 12:19

PMQs - Labour and SNP asking PM to commit himself to ensuring people will get paid while self isolating but Bojo reckons SSP/UC should cover it Hmm

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 04/03/2020 12:20

@swingchandelier on another board a poster had said her sister was waiting or had waited 6 days for the results. Sorry to confuse, perhaps different in different trusts or maybe they’ve stepped it up. I’d read it took 72 hours, so nobody quote me!

QueenofmyPrinces · 04/03/2020 12:25

I have just been to ASDA and it was nice to see that at every till, including all the self service tills, all had alcohol based hand sanitiser bottles next to them. The till in the photo department had one too.

Didn’t see many people using it though....

Alone07 · 04/03/2020 12:28

They have said an 2 additional people have been tested positive for covid19 in Scotland this morning.
Do you think that's the update for today or will there be one at 2pm?

Random18 · 04/03/2020 12:28

2pm is Public Health England.
