Has anyone read/seen/heard any accounts from CV survivors?
It would be reassuring (or not !) to hear some first hand accounts of their treatment, progress and whether they have any lasting after-effects.

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 07:48

Chris Whitty... added that there will be a six week period before the UK will start to see a significant amount of transmission of the virus.

I would love to see the reason behind 6 weeks. I know he is a professional, but everything seems to point towards this happening much sooner than 6 weeks.

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2020 07:48

I think we will move on from 'self-isolation' to 'social protection' of vulnerable groups pretty quickly.

The testing of ICU patients tends to suggest that is starting to happen.

Horehound · 04/03/2020 07:49

So China has peaked already did someone say?

Honestly I don't think this is going to be so bad.

Springinsight · 04/03/2020 07:49

Comenext this is what I'd like to know, what they needed for relief!

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2020 07:50

significant amount of transmission of the virus

Define 'significant amount of transmission of the virus'. Does your definition match the chief medical officers?

Springsnake · 04/03/2020 07:50

I’ve never said this out loud ,
But I’m absolutely terrified, and convinced we are all going to die
Or at least a lot of us are
I’ve adult children ,at uni ,an international college ,and a police officer
I’m terrified for all of us ,my police officer adult child ,says they’ve not been given face masks or hand gel ,or nothing really has been mentioned.they don’t seem worried at all ,
I’m getting more stressed because I’m trying to hide I’m feeling stressed

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2020 07:51

See authoritarian draconian measures to halt disease.

Then come back to me on that one.

swingchandelier · 04/03/2020 07:52

@TheRealHousewife I’ve never heard of that. If it were that simple to avoid viruses by sipping water surely that would be official advice? Most viruses grow at the back of the nose so water wouldn’t help that either?

I’ve actually just done a quick google and this advice is being debunked in a few places

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 07:53

The Chief medical officer hasn't specified what he means by a significant amount of transmission. So I can't compare if we have the same idea of significant.

RipleysCat · 04/03/2020 07:53

I think the numbers must be under reported due to in part the 111 guidance. Not sure if it’s changed now.
A friends dc was sent home from school on Monday with all the classic symptoms, they have recently come back from the Italian border.
111 advised that as they hadn’t had contact with someone who’s had it, it’s business as usual.
The school has refused to have the dc back but they are out and about, and my friend is back in work with a cough. They most likely do not have it, but if they do they are out there spreading it.
And there’s probably loads of cases like this.

Konicek007 · 04/03/2020 07:54

Can I all ask you..
When Swine flu was happening, did they tall about it like they do about Coronavirus ??
I must admit at that time 2009-2010 I was young, had no phone with super fast news internet, had not watched news as was dancing and dating away, read no papers as was always out and no time to even turn telly on.
Now I’m home, older, have super fast phone with super fast internet with fastest news, so I can not literally escape, also Tv on..
Is it because this really much worse or was it like that with Swine flu too and I missed that all?
In those 2009 I worked in busy retail, I remember we were on tills serving and used hand sanitizer after every customer, giggling about it..

NotJustACigar · 04/03/2020 07:57

Springsnake we're not all going to die.. well we are one day but not of coronavirus and hopefully not for a very long time. At the moment they're saying 1-3% of those who catch it are likely to die. If your son is young and healthy without pre-existing conditions he is likely to only have a mild case. So yes it's bad but it's not as bad as your worst anxieties are telling you.

On another note I was so annoyed at being called hysterical when I asked about my sister's living situation I forgot to say thank you to those who provided actual helpful comments... so a belated thank you from me.

Fourducksate · 04/03/2020 07:57

Did anyone else feel a bit more reassured with Prof. Chris Whitty’s calm approach?

Destinysdaughter · 04/03/2020 07:57

The official advice seems to be to wash hands with bar soap, not hand wash. Does anyone know why that is more effective?

Konicek007 · 04/03/2020 07:58

Also I was looking into those numbers when they said yesterday that they except 80% population in U.K. to get ill.
China has population of 1.5 billion and 80 thousands got ill, maybe more if not official numbers....That’s not even a quarter of a percent really.
Why they expect 80 percent in here?

NotJustACigar · 04/03/2020 07:59

Wow Springsnake I've just read over what I wrote and that was incredibly sexist of me in shocked at myself - I assumed your police officer child was a son when you didn't specify the gender. I'm really sorry about that and blame the fact I haven't had my coffee yet!

Comenext · 04/03/2020 07:59

The Corona Virus can enter through the eyes too and therefore sipping water is not the complete answer.
Another point I would like to make is that nothing is being done about CLEANING key points such as door handles, supermarket trolley handles, counters, checkouts, keypads and all the other places where the public are at risk of picking up germs from random strangers.
I wear gloves when I shop and was them on a hot wash afterwards.
I know some of my friends think this is silly but who cares?

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 08:00

The official advice seems to be to wash hands with bar soap, not hand wash. Does anyone know why that is more effective?

Its to do with the dispenser which will be dirty and the virus will live on it. Studies have found that viruses don't come off the soap and back onto hands. Plus people rub more with bar soap than with liquid soap.

Random18 · 04/03/2020 08:00

You could argue that Italy has not yet had significant transmission. Its affected a lot yes but you look at the population then it's not really significant at this point.

Horehound · 04/03/2020 08:00

@RedToothBrush if it worked, we can do the same if it comes to it Confused
Again, you're scaremongering

Sassenach85 · 04/03/2020 08:01

If I had known hand gel would go out of stock so quickly I would have been more organised, I wish someone who has had this could tell us what meds helped so that I could have an amount at home ready and waiting

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 08:02

we can do the same if it comes to it

I don't always agree with what Red posts, but there is absolutely no way we will impose measures like China did.

Random18 · 04/03/2020 08:03

Horehound we can't do the same.

The CMO has just said that.

Wuhan was different. It was new and not widespread - shutting city down worked to a certain extent there.

And it probably helped delay things elsewhere.

But China will struggle now like everyone else if they have instances that are widespread and imported.

Konicek007 · 04/03/2020 08:03

@Springsnake I think the same.. I’m with pre existing condition which could be fatal, even without Coro.
I need to sneak to town but I’m so scared to go.... there is few Coro where I live..in my town
