I think we will move on from 'self-isolation' to 'social protection' of vulnerable groups pretty quickly. The testing of ICU patients tends to suggest that is starting to happen
Do you know what this entails @RedToothBrush?

ShanghaiDiva · 04/03/2020 08:05

@RedToothBrush
I think most people are unaware of the measures China has taken or think that the restrictions only apply to Wuhan and Hubei province. They has several factors in their favour
It was Chinese New Year and easy to extend the public holiday
Schools were already closed for the holiday
Similarly a lot of small businesses had already closed for a 7 day break

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 08:06

China has population of 1.5 billion and 80 thousands got ill, maybe more if not official numbers....That’s not even a quarter of a percent really.Why they expect 80 percent in here?

Because its a completely different society and we can't/won't lockdown to the same extent here. China put in place strict measures which affected a tenth of the entire world population in order to keep their numbers as low as they have been.

Skyejuly · 04/03/2020 08:08

I saw paramedics yesterday attending a house. No masks or gloves.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/03/2020 08:10

@Random18
As I have mentioned before the measures taken extended to every province in China, not just Hubei. I was there when it started and I live 400km from Wuhan.
China does have widespread cases - every province has had cases and they are now using quarantine measures to prevent reinfection from outside China eg 14 day home isolation regardless of symptoms and isolation in a designated quarantine area for those coming from Japan, Iran, Italy and Korea.

BiBiBirdie · 04/03/2020 08:13

I think some areas of society will only start to take it seriously when someone in the country actually does die as a direct result of CV. Until that happens, and with the PM we have, the whole "more people die of flu/cancer/TB/falling downstairs" will continue and people will look at us with disdain and contempt.
I think we will see it soon. I hope not of course but we know we have an aging population and that seems to be where the high death rates are.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/03/2020 08:14

@HasaDigaEebowai
Yes, China’s reaction has been incredible.
A one party system does make it easier and faster to implement extreme measures and as I mentioned up thread certain factors such as schools already being on holiday made the process easier.

Quartz2208 · 04/03/2020 08:15

80% is one of the worse case scenarios.

The other is that it is here to stay - which given the % death rate for the elderly could have a implications for our life expectancy

This is not going to kill us - worse case estimates are around 3-4%. It will however I think have an impact on us and change the way we live for the next 4-6 months. This could vary from minor changes (most companies have banned non essential travel/losing holidays) to more draconian measures

peridito · 04/03/2020 08:16

I was wondering about fever being the body's way of killing off virus. I don't know if this is true .

If it is ,is it best not to try and reduce temp by taking paracetamol etc ?

Thinking in babies and infants might be necessary to reduce temp ,tho not sure of science .

Anyone scientific who could advise ?

Random18 · 04/03/2020 08:17

China’s reaction has been incredible

Yet still it is spreading like wildfire throughout the world.

Let's not forget this is where it originated and China hid it for many weeks.

Can China really quarantine all visitors for 14 days for a lengthy period of time?

I really don't see that is possible at all.

MollyButton · 04/03/2020 08:21

As far as I remember with Swine Flu there was very little attempt to contain it. They did take temperatures at airports but that was useless.
The difference was that as soon as it spread to the USA it was pretty much impossible to prevent, as there is so much cross Atlantic travel. China at least initially seems possible to isolate from. Also if the two countries I would expect China would seem to be able to have a better hold on a new disease, a benefit of a very authoritarian regime.

NEW: South Korea reports 293 new cases of coronavirus, raising country's total to more than 5,600 - Yonhap t.co/eUoE2bjB9j

WaterSheep · 04/03/2020 08:21

A further two cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Scotland, bringing the country’s total to three.

I wonder what the total for the UK will be today. I'm thinking anything under 70 will be unlikely.

pedanticstyleguide · 04/03/2020 08:22

Yes it is better to let a fever run its course if possible, but of course you have to be careful that you don't get so hot that you fit and this is especially the case with young children. It's a balancing act. Usually if I have a bad cold with a temperature I take paracetomol to make myself feel better especially if I have a headache with it, but it's really to reduce my temperature although that's another consequence. And reducing your temperature makes you feel better! But if I am just feeling grotty without a headache I don't bother taking anything beyond vit C, zinc lozenges for a sore throat etc.

peridito · 04/03/2020 08:22

Neil Ferguson on Radio 4 was interesting .Very measured . But ,probably me imagining it ,I thought he was confirming the we're not really trying to contain it now theory .

pedanticstyleguide · 04/03/2020 08:23

Sorry the thread moved on really quickly, my post was in response to I was wondering about fever being the body's way of killing off virus. I don't know if this is true

Cremebrule · 04/03/2020 08:23

BigChocFrenzy I get that it would be unethical but I’m curious if the maths and epidemiology would work in theory. If I’m going to get it, I’d rather have it now than in the peak. Obviously the big question is the ‘if’ the early cases will be dealing with uncertainty but I bet the people in hospital over here are getting the best possible care and attention that just won’t be possible further down the line.

peridito · 04/03/2020 08:24

MP in parliament " Kissing is nice but dangerous"

Voice from floor "It always was ! "

ShanghaiDiva · 04/03/2020 08:26

@Random18
Quarantine is already in place. If I want to return home I will need to self isolate for 14 days, there are no exceptions. If you are coming from an affected area, new rules mean you go directly from the airport to a designated quarantine area.
Whether you think this is possible or not is irrelevant: it’s already happening.

ChipotleBlessing · 04/03/2020 08:26

The UK is not going to weld people in to buildings. But short of that, I think quite a lot of the measures could be taken here. This is a fairly right wing government, authoritarianism will come pretty easily to them. And they have a significant majority in the House of Commons, so even if opposition disagreed they couldn’t actually stop it.

Mazarinegreen · 04/03/2020 08:27

@comenext - there was an interesting article in the guardian on Saturday written by a student who caught it (and recovered) along with his family - I can't do links but you may be able to find it?

woodencoffeetable · 04/03/2020 08:30

wrt china you wouldn't oppose authority there, that lands you in a whole lot of trouble alà 'banged up abroad'.

in uk 'mouthy margret' would just say 'pah, you can't tell me what to do' and cough over the fresh bread in the supermarket.

ifonly4 · 04/03/2020 08:30

The WHO charts are showing 56, so we've got at least another five in the UK.
