I would really recommend watching the Who press conference. It appears to confirm that the measures the government is currently taking and those that they have suggested they may do in future, are very much in line with WHO advice.

FatTablets · 03/03/2020 16:32

Would you all be happy with your DP flying to a festival in Barcelona next week with 30K attendees??

Thetigeronthewobbelboard · 03/03/2020 16:32

@RandomlyChosenName I missed that bit.

Although am I remembering correctly that they didn’t know where patient 1 in Haslemere got it from so perhaps this could be patient zero. Off to check local Facebook groups.

VivaLeBeaver · 03/03/2020 16:34

It's good that so far all cases are travel related.

Thetigeronthewobbelboard · 03/03/2020 16:35

@FatTablets I would be apprehensive but ok with it I think. 🤔 My husband will be at an event for work with 166,000 people (although I imagine attendance will be down).

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/03/2020 16:36

The subway is being cleaned here in NYC. Pictures of teams in masks and sturdy looking gloves. Plus other staff wiping down turnstiles with spray.

Are they cleaning the tube? It can't hurt?

RocketFire · 03/03/2020 16:37

announcement from London Marathon is its being closely monitored

really cant see it going ahead. not just the spectators in close contact but for runners health.....anyone with the virus could collapse. running 26.2 with the slightest illness is a recipe for disaster

M0reGinPlease · 03/03/2020 16:37

How long does the virus live on surfaces?

Kuponut · 03/03/2020 16:38

I don't really want to mark my card with the woman who runs our placements more than I already am - but we have university students going in on placement to elderly care homes and I really am thinking that continuing that at present is irresponsible. (My half of the cohort are going into schools then we're all in lectures together, along with a lot of students from overseas - so it's a nice recipe for germy soup brewing). I really think they should suspend the care home part of the placement now the UK's being affected more - but knowing my uni they won't.

DH's company has told them to make sure they have the means to work from home to hand at all points in case they're required to - I've got my mum (who's older than she wants to admit) determined she's coming down to DD2's birthday party in a couple of weeks - I'll leave the risk assessment of that up to her because there's no way I'll be able to stop her when she's set her mind on something - but I'm really not happy about it.

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/03/2020 16:39

How long did it take to get the swine fu vaccine to market?

I remember having the vaccine and it seemed that it arrived very quickly.

NettleTea · 03/03/2020 16:39

@M0reGinPlease I believe its 9 days

OffTheShelfElf · 03/03/2020 16:40

Also, after running that distance, your immune system will be slightly weakened for a few hours - not what you need when you're mingling with thousands of people.

NettleTea · 03/03/2020 16:40

swine flu is different because it is a flu virus and we have lots of different types of those anyway
This is not

peridito · 03/03/2020 16:42

Where do posters get the breakdown showing how many of today's UK cases are travel related ?

@ofwarren did you say dept of health twitter had map with locations ,have I missread ? Can't find it .Posting in haste dont mean to sound abrupt ,your updates v much appreciated .

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2020 16:43

"WHO on the falling number of cases in China"

I gather that the concern now is, what happens as they relax conditions in China and let life there get back to normal

WIll it be like a fire that has been fully smothered, or will it roar back into a conflagration again ?
That's a guide to what would happen elsewhere too

The WHO and other countries will be watching very closely and anxiously

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/03/2020 16:44

@NettleTea I am well aware that covid 19 isn't flu. I was just musing that the swine flu vaccine seemed to be available very quickly.

Springinsight · 03/03/2020 16:46

Sending students into placement of any kind is utterly balmy.

Perhaps the placement side doesn't realise just what an open and exposed environment uni, college's, schools are.

Poor elderly folk being unwittingly exposed.

Reallybadidea · 03/03/2020 16:46

WHO say "covid-19 does NOT transmit as efficiently as influenza, from the data we have so far. People with influenza who are asymptomatic are major drivers of transmission which does NOT appear to be the case with covid-19."

This is good news.

MissPoldark · 03/03/2020 16:48

@AbsentmindedWoman I remember having the swine flu vaccine in October or Nov 2009.
Very quick but that’s because it was a flu vaccine, I imagine this is quite different. They already knew the “recipe” for the swine flu vaccine.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 03/03/2020 16:49

"Expect people you know to die'

It should also say "Expect to die...expect to leave your kids as orphans..expect to lose your parents.." What's to say the reader will survive. It may be true but what a fear inspiring message. I wonder how many people's mental health will mean that they too die?

peridito · 03/03/2020 16:49

@MOreginplease I heard on rdio that 75 hours could live on surfaces . Declines ,so not so virulent at end of period as at begining .
Also depends on surface ,survives longer on non pourus .
Plus exposure to light and heat helps eliminate .

sorry for typos

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 16:50

Was it the worldometer map @perdito?
It's not a map I've shared.

MissPoldark · 03/03/2020 16:51

I’m wondering whether if one of us has to self isolate it would be better in a south facing or sunny room.

RandomlyChosenName · 03/03/2020 16:51

peridito Department of Health and Social Care Twitter Feed. I can’t work out how to copy and paste it onto the thread though.
