Thats 14 cases including 5 deaths in ONE COUNTY. Not one state.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 20:03

It doesn't seem to spread like flu, and individual areas are not spiralling out of control.

Here its working to contain it, in the states, with their approach its not.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 02/03/2020 20:03

@MissPoldark I'm afraid I have health anxiety and catastrophise everything too. It's almost a relief not to be the only one. ANd I agree not good to dwell on worst outcome.

Someone made a good point about theatre trip - ours is taking 50-80 out of 280 in the school year. The others that go will be sharing any germs the next day at school.
Re; my tube comment - yes I'd be livid if they go on it as it wasn't mentioned in any of the letters sent home about the trip.

MaryHerbert · 02/03/2020 20:04

As part of a 'health' topic in school we worked with a nurse who brought in a 'stain' which showed up germs left on hands AFTER washing.

In most cases, after regular hand washing, the stain showed pupils had germs right around the edge of the nail bed.

There's a video showing this, and demonstrating good handwashing technique, on the bbc website:

DonkeyKong2019 · 02/03/2020 20:06

All those Washington deaths are a single care home. There's about 108 residents of that care home. I wouldn't fancy the chances of many surviving sadly.

Evening. Now at 40 in the UK, that’s interesting. The case who works in a cancer clinic is not good is it. I asked the question a few threads ago about cancer hospitals and if policies had changed regarding visitors etc. Same across the board for anyone visiting vulnerable immune suppressed people in hospitals to be extremely careful. Ideally they should restrict the general public from too much unnecessary free access to these locations.

DonkeyKong2019 · 02/03/2020 20:11

As an aside I have elderly, ill health grandparents living in California. I'm definitely concerned for them!

Quartz2208 · 02/03/2020 20:11

The stats coming out of Lifecare were sadly always going to be awful - as far as I can tell you were there because you needed 24 hour care so it was always going to be like this. Those stats cannot be looked at as part of the whole at all

OneForMeToo · 02/03/2020 20:11

My middle child is due on her first school residential next week. Within the uk but I’m not liking it. We have the type of head who wouldn’t closed even if we had 6ft of snow and no water.

mrshoho · 02/03/2020 20:12

Thankfully it looks as though the clinician at the cancer hospital has been confirmed as negative.

screamer1 · 02/03/2020 20:20

I know people think that it must be everywhere and not contained (I'm of that mindset myself). However the stats don't bear that up atm so they?

If 13,000 people tested and 40 positives so far?

Fourducksate · 02/03/2020 20:22

@SansaSnark.

On the previous thread, some mentioned child deaths, It didn’t say 0.2% deaths in children, the WHO report says ‘critical’.

I think it’s important to get that right.

woodencoffeetable · 02/03/2020 20:22

I thought all 4 cases today had been to Italy, so aren't connected to other confirmed UK cases? If this is the case then we're still waiting for the tests back from others who have had close contact with the current positive cases. In the meantime those who have now tested positive have been potentially spreading the virus to others.

I think we're just in the lull before the tests come back, and we'll soon see the numbers begin to rise.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 20:27

@screamer1 I agree with you that in the UK, I don't think there are lots of undetected cases. I think there must be a few due to the Essex patient, but not lots, or lots more would be being picked up in screening. I don't think this is the case in all countries though.

@Fourducksate I saw the 0.2% death rate figure elsewhere, apologies if that's incorrect.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 20:27

Australian health officials are meeting today to consider additional measures to stop the spread of coronavirus, including a possible ban on large gatherings and asking people to work from home - ABC, citing sources

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 20:28

@WaterSheep I've seen that the 2 South Devon cases had recently returned from Italy, and the Kent case had too. Do we know anything about the 4th case yet?

TokyoSushi · 02/03/2020 20:29

Thanks for the new thread!

Horehound · 02/03/2020 20:29

From the previous thread someone said that 40 seemed low and they were expecting 50 or so. I'm really confused. Why would just ten extra cases seem more acceptable and likely? And why is 40 seemed low and 50 would be high??

NotJustACigar · 02/03/2020 20:30

On previous threads there was a bit of discussion about the different types of carex hand sanitizer. My friend emailed them and got this in return which she has just sent to me. It isn't all that clear but seems to suggest all their hand gels are effective:

^ Thank you for contacting PZ Cussons Consumer Relations regarding Carex hand gel product range.

The alcohol in our all hand gels is 70g per 100g of hand gel.

We recently decided that the positioning of our Fun Editions range, which includes Strawberry Laces, is more suited to the Cosmetic regulations with the primary function to cleanse and help promote genera hygiene. Our Core Hand Gel range, available in Original, Aloe Vera, Sensitive and Moisture variants will continue offer Antibacterial properties.

Finally, all our hand gels are ethanol-based formulations. Ethanol kills organisms by denaturing their proteins and dissolving their lipids. For maximum efficacy hand gels should be used on clean hands and not recommended as an alternative to washing your hands with handwash and water.

I hope you find this information helpful. Thank you for your interest in our products. ^

Sansa

www.gov.uk/government/news/cmo-for-england-announces-4-new-cases-of-novel-coronavirus-2-march-2020

Says All 4 patients had recently travelled from Italy.

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 20:31

Based on my social media, there appears to be a link between Brexiteers and “it’s just the flu”.
Confirmation that they live in cloud cuckoo land!

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 20:31

Actually, this article in the Guardian suggests only 3 new cases: www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/02/coronavirus-three-more-cases-in-uk-amid-fears-over-strain-on-nhs

This quote from the article is a bit concerning More than 99% of 1,618 medics questioned by the Doctors’ Association did not agree that the service is well prepared to cope if it is hit by an epidemic.

RhubarbTea · 02/03/2020 20:35

Fuck. The friend I was staying with in Devon at the weekend has teen kids at the school which has been closed. I didn't really get super close to said kids but I did stay at their house... Hoping they don't now come down with it. And that I don't. Eeeeek.

mumofone234 · 02/03/2020 20:35

Apologies if this question has already been answered, but my two-year-old has already been hospitalised twice for viral-induced wheeze and a chest infection - will he count as in danger of getting this severely? I’m worried sick about it and feel it’s inevitable that he’s going to get it because even though I’m careful toddlers are sooo hard to keep ‘sterile’. Am I being ridiculous?
