Local school has been closed at lunch time due to a step mum of student that has tested positive (recent travel to North Italy). The student had been in contact with step mum and spent time in their house recently and then subsequently attended school.

PHE have not recommended a school closure but the head teacher has made the decision to temporarily close until at least Friday.

Mum of student has been on local social media to reiterate that the student has not tested positive nor has she it is only the step mum. I think she is quite concerned that it might be automatically assumed her son has also got the virus when at the moment this is not the case.

When questioned whether she would self isolate her son she has responded that she is still "debating" as Public Health have told her he is ok as long as he doesn't show any symptoms.

I am really confused by the advice from PHE as I thought that the virus could have asymptomatic transmission and pass from a person who has the virus but doesn't necessarily have any symptoms?

They’re saying people on zero hour contracts can claim statutory sick pay. But they won’t get paid for the first three days and the amount they receive is probably less than a third of their normal salary. So they still aren’t going to self isolate because they can’t afford to.

Another big problem is that many employers falsely class staff as “self employed” to get around employment legislation. I was a teacher and was classed as self employed despite the fact that I taught in the same school for five years. I couldn’t afford to be off sick because as a “self employed” person I couldn’t claim any sick pay at all, not even statutory sick pay.

Babyfairy0923 · 03/03/2020 14:16

Have they said where the new cases are??

FingonTheValiant · 03/03/2020 14:16

Slightly reassuring to see that Italy had no new cases
Don’t they report at 18h?

Hugglespuffed · 03/03/2020 14:17

Will airports give out face masks or should I buy some? Which kind? I don't want to take away from those who need but feel a flight i should have one?

Oakmaiden · 03/03/2020 14:17

It feels for me as if the death rate is overstated as a %.

At the moment it is a best guess - and based mostly on the reported Chinese figures, not UK ones.

tigerbear · 03/03/2020 14:17

@AvocadoOwl oh, ok. 😬

If you manage to actually even find any for sale, can you let us know where?

Oakmaiden · 03/03/2020 14:19

What I would really like to know is how many of the new cases have travelled abroad recently, or are connected to someone who has travelled abroad. That tells us far more than where they are located does.

DonkeyKong2019 · 03/03/2020 14:21

There's no way Italy will report less than several hundred at their announcement time

LittleRen · 03/03/2020 14:25

@SunburstsOrMarbleHalls are you on the Wirral?

toysoldier · 03/03/2020 14:26

Hilbre High School has sent pupils home after a lad's step mother has tested positive... My niece and nephew go there... Sad

LittleRen · 03/03/2020 14:27

@toysoldier local to me too.. very local!

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 03/03/2020 14:31

How are people finding out where the new cases are? Just from their own/local social media? Why don’t they release information as to the new cases whereabouts when they release the numbers?

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 14:32

Italy don't report till after 5pm

Ivo Cilesi, one of the world's leading experts on Alzheimer's disease, has died of coronavirus in Italy. Among other things, he devised several methods of therapy that helped people suffering from the disease to reduce the symptoms of the disease.

He was only 62 years old

User1775564212 · 03/03/2020 14:33

How do I add a photo?

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 14:33

| 2nd confirmed #coronavirus case hits #NewYork

User1775564212 · 03/03/2020 14:34

I’m trying to share a map with new UK cases and how they contracted it

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 03/03/2020 14:37

amz That's sad. Sounds like he did a lot of good.

These statistics are all real people and every one is a tragedy for the families.

Sad

#CZECH REP- Restrictions applied at University of Brno. Lectures, student trips, conferences, library and gym are closed. 15 measures will apply from tomorrow. (With only 4 cases of #Coronavirus in the country, talk about measures)

I don't have a paperclip on mine either! Maybe link?

Keynote1 · 03/03/2020 14:41

Do the WHO have a video meeting every day,?
