Seems like many business are taking good steps that will also protect the business in the long run.

Numbersarefun · 02/03/2020 23:28

I was wondering if recently retired or part time HCPs, who wanted to help, could help with the 111 service.

middleager · 02/03/2020 23:29

Dreading colleage returning from overseas travel next Monday. We practically sit on top of each other - and then there's the aircon.

If I mention this to anyone at work though, they'll laugh at me.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 23:29

Fortunately, the supermarkets are working out emergency plans together, even if the govt is lagging behind:

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/mar/02/uk-supermarkets-braced-for-stockpiling-if-coronavirus-escalates-panic-buying

British supermarkets have drawn up “feed the nation” contingency plans that would help the country cope with any panic-buying brought on by a sudden escalation of the coronavirus outbreak.

Under the plans, supermarkets would work with suppliers to scale back the variety of foods and groceries available, and instead focus on maintaining supplies of staple products.
....
Next week’s budget will be redrawn to focus on shoring up the economy against the impact of coronavirus, the Treasury confirmed.

Wehttam · 02/03/2020 23:33

Feed the nation? I’m fine with that as long as I get the M&S or Waitrose donations, thanks. 😎

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 23:33

That's fabulous news big choc, and entirely sensible. Feed the nation!

It's like the war.

Numbers I could be wrong but I'm sure medics did used to man it and now anyone can man it because it's all questions?

Surely only those that want to come out of retirement will?
Only those fit and healthy could do any of lifting.

Justaboy · 02/03/2020 23:36

Bog roll is short in Japan, South Korea and Italy so people are aware thats its a big deal.

And we import bloody bog roll!, can't we make any bloody thing here anymore?

We'll have to do what gran did in the war tear up bits of noospaper!

SpokeTooSoon · 02/03/2020 23:40

I honestly think people on here won’t be happy until everyone they know has this. Except themselves, squatting in their pantries eating tinned pineapple.

Talk about drama queens.

attatiti · 02/03/2020 23:40

HCPs don't do lifting (except possibly the ambulance service)

StinkyWizleteets · 02/03/2020 23:42

My partner works for the NHS. He’s had to shave his facial hair off for mask fitting. In the time we’ve been together I’ve never seen his chin bald! It’s scary because he’ll be seconded to ICU given his specialist training. He’s healthy and strong and will have a fancy mask and dry gear.

I am immunocompromised due to medication and just a wee bit worried about all this. What if my kids get it? I don’t expect they’ll be too symptomatic based on current stats but there would be no one else to help look after them and I’m a prime candidate for complications and death. I kind of feel like a sitting duck :(

UPDATE from Lake Washington Institute of Technology on the 22 students & faculty who visited Kirkland nursing home where multiple ppl contracted #coronavirus. They are now being told, 3 days after coronavirus cases were confirmed at facility, that they should self-quarantine. t.co/207R16Y4ch

Govt. announces income compensation plan

Japan's government says it will pay up to about 80 dollars per person per day to businesses as income compensation for parents taking leave from work in response to temporary school closures that began nationwide.

The health and labor ministry on Monday revealed the details of a new subsidy system as the government strives to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

The ministry will pay the subsidy of up to 8,330 yen per person per day to businesses if their employees take paid leave to take care of their children due to school closures.

It'll also offer stipend in cases where employees care for people suspected of having been infected with the virus
The measure will cover regular and non-regular workers who take leave between February 27 and March 31.

The ministry plans to determine and announce soon how the system will be implemented.

tangledyarn · 02/03/2020 23:47

I really can't see many retired NHS workers wanting to return. There will be a few who might be happy to put in a few shifts but most people in their 60s have at the very least 1 long term health problem, or live with someone else who does. Plus it'd be potentially stressful, risky work in a chaotic overstretched system where you are not familiar with policies or updated guidance.

Justaboy · 02/03/2020 23:52

A few articles here on how the Flu virus can be spread by just breathing.

I cannot see any reason why the COVID virus should not do the same!
This may well explain the rapid infection rates!.

I spoke to a friend today and ask how well prepared the hospital she works in was for corona virus. She said they had lots of face masks in stock, but that when they were checked they discovered that the masks had been manufactured in China, specifically Wuhan 🤦‍♀️ Further, the manufacturer had been In Touch and asked for the masks to be returned - because Wuhan has a shortage now...

GPwife2411 · 02/03/2020 23:58

DH just came back from an interesting meeting. Still no success in sourcing PPE for all the GP surgeries in his area and an astounding lack of clarity about how to actually get hold of the existing stock.

Also general acceptance that contact tracing will terminate relatively soon, and that we'll be in the 'we're all exposed' phase shortly.

Feel free to call a practicing GP involved in contingency planning a drama queen though @SpokeTooSoon

Eating tinned pineapple does sound quite nice though, will give you that.

ofwarren · 03/03/2020 00:07

Once we stop contact tracing, who gets tested? Only those who get sick enough to go to hospital?

usernameishistory · 03/03/2020 00:15

Yes snark I have all that information same as you.

As I keep saying, unless I slipped into a time warp, Brighton guy was long enough ago for most of brighton to be infected by now. It's not.

Unless, the, we're no longer testing anyone, including those that have been through Milan, as per pp, is the way of avoiding mass hysteria?

Undoubtedly medicines used and care given is now better informed based on shared information from others' experience, so death rates would be lower.

Why have there been no further cases, and why is this not good news?

I must've slipped into a time warp, is so, fine makes sense, if not, its infuriatingly confounding.

The German cruise ship "Aida Aura" has postponed its departure from Haugesund due to fear of #coronavirus in two of the passengers. The two passengers are now quarantined in their cabin and awaiting their test results.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/03/2020 00:25

I'm staggered that anyone would set foot on a cruise ship atm

HeIenaDove · 03/03/2020 00:26

@BigChocFrenzy me too I cant understand it.
