The death rate in Italy isn't that much higher than what we've been told to expect- between 2-3%. We have to bear in mind these sample sizes are still relatively small (compared to the population level) and individual differences can skew a sample a lot.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 22:43

"Outbreak started at a hospital."

As in the care homes in the US, quick-spreading and higher death rate

Imagine what will happen if this hits refugee camps
Then imagine what will happen when people in those camps panic and try to flee somewhere safer ....

Travellers with suspected coronavirus could be DETAINED at UK borders in Boris Johnson's dramatic coronavirus battle plan that could also call up army of NHS workers to treat the sick

BloomedAgain · 02/03/2020 22:45

Thanks RedToothbrush what a horrible thing this is.

Choux · 02/03/2020 22:45

Italy - at least two of the earlier casualties were in hospital already with cancer. Not so much is known about more recent deaths but likely several others were already in hospital.

Plus the Italian population has a higher proportion in their 70s and 80s than China so would have proportionally more deaths as that is the most at risk age group. Finally the way it spread quietly for some time and Italy being a culture that hugs and kisses and lives with / looks after their elderly relatives may have been a factor in transmissions.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 22:45

I fear the US cases may be as underestimated as those in Iran were
... and for a similar reason:
the incompetent regime in charge messing up public health and then trying to keep a lid on it all.

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 22:46

There's a lot of could and may in that article.

Where are these NHS volunteers supposed to come from?

allthesharks · 02/03/2020 22:48

A school in my local area has asked all children to come in 10minutes earlier to wash hands before school starts.

@boon While I agree that this is a very good idea, I'd be interested to see how many parents don't bring their children in 10 minutes early, either because they don't see the need or it's just not convenient for them.

Wehttam · 02/03/2020 22:49

Is anyone else watching this shady press conference by Mike Pence? They’re all laughing and joking as if it’s nothing. Are they purposely downplaying this?!

GPwife2411 · 02/03/2020 22:51

The idea that retired NHS workers will be willing to return to work remains quite extraordinary to me.

I'd say trump should immediately order free testing to those that want it. But I have a feeling some Americans wouldn't want that

mac12 · 02/03/2020 22:52

@SansaSnark thank you for that, that’s reassuring to know. I’ll look up your other thread to see your suggestions. I’ve just started a thread on taking kids out because it’s just running round and round my head & driving me crazy esp as everyone else I know just shrugs it all off as fuss about nothing so I feel like a total loon to even be considering this.

middleager · 02/03/2020 22:53

FFS this denial/jokes are being replicated in work places country wide.

persin · 02/03/2020 22:53

it's hard to judge especially when the government are being secretive. If they say the outbreak will peak in a few months while Italy happened in a week or so I don't necessarily take that as fact. my own dc has asthma and commutes into near city centre for school

GPwife2411 · 02/03/2020 22:53

And unless this army of volunteers will be very, very carefully health-checked themselves (e.g. have they have the flu vax?!) I can see a sudden influx of enthusiastic but untrained volunteers being counterproductive to health.

OP posts:
SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 22:57

@mac12 it was on one of these previous threads- it was suggestions for the government/schools really, not for parents. I'll have a look at your other thread, though!

How2Help · 02/03/2020 23:12

Anyhoo my bit of gossip is I know that all travel for GSK employees is banned.*

All travel? In that case they need to tell their employees Grin
Or do you mean non essential international travel?

RhubarbTea · 02/03/2020 23:15

I watched the livestream of the US press conference, it was a fucking joke. They are obviously trying to downplay even as it rips through the country. It was also soooo telling that Trump wasn't the one holding it because he would have said something awful or messed up or tried to answer everything himself and just waffled on, instead of deferring to the experts.

For anyone who missed it they said they'll be doing one EVERY DAY. Hmm Lordy.

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 23:16

International work travel banned by my husbands (large international) employer too today. Much to my relief. They have also stopped meetings involving more than a certain number of directors/ board members... obviously worried about wiping out big decision makers at a time they are needed most!

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2020 23:16

Does anyone know if workers in China are starting in some areas to go back to work? I heard a rumour this was happening and the effects carefully monitored.

It’s a positive step if so.

And on a personal level I’m freaking out slightly as heard today already a shortage of the meds I’m on. Think I have about 3 weeks worth less and people I know saying already can’t get hold of it on a National level.

Yes they are. They are so scared it will melt the stock market and make trump look bad. Can't have that.

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 23:20

@GPwife2411 my mother is a GP due to retire very shortly; she is planning to remove herself from the GMC register the second she finishes her last shift.

Laniakea · 02/03/2020 23:21

Yup cross border travel banned completely at Dh’s work (US-China-German-British) - since Friday afternoon. I’m relieved, they’ve (UK & German part) been getting a bit frit by complete lack of guidance from US headquarters up until Friday. It’s about 50/50 working from home atm - which is fairly typical - I don’t think it will take much in terms of increased number of cases for them to say all working from home.

Horehound · 02/03/2020 23:21

@How2Help haha he's all non essential travel and any essential travel has to be approved by emmay walsmley and the CET group. basically, no one is travelling!

AvocadoOwl · 02/03/2020 23:24

Re the US thing I have a few (usually intelligent and reasonable) American friends sharing 'it's just the flu' type posts on Facebook. Makes me wonder what the general feeling is about it over there Confused
