LarkDescending · 03/03/2020 00:57

Where are you getting 1 in 10 for the DP?

7 deaths out of 705 cases per Worldometers. 1 in 100.

falcon5 · 03/03/2020 01:01

That link snd then latest report says France are issuing guidance against all non essential travel outside frsnce doesn't it? Sorry I hilariously have a bit of a tempersture snd am a bit scrambled ...

usernameishistory · 03/03/2020 01:06

Oh, thank goodness its lower. Sorry, yes, absolutely 1/100. My miscalc. It's actually better than other rates, although there are still nearly 600 active cases.

persin · 03/03/2020 01:06

does anyone know why the fatality rate was so high in Wuhan and then reduced ? Is that usual in an outbreak ?

usernameishistory · 03/03/2020 01:07

A lot learnt!

usernameishistory · 03/03/2020 01:09

A novel virus also has no known treatments.

Drugs have to be trialled tosee what works.

I think anti-histamines are a good idea (for personal treatment I mean to calm the immune reaction)

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/dwp-urge-coronavirus-hit-benefit-21617489

Benefit chiefs have urged any Coronavirus-hit welfare claimants to contact their Jobcentre to avoid being sanctioned.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) today insisted none of those directly affected by the global outbreak will have their benefits stopped.

However, DWP staff must know about the situation. They must also deem that claimants had a good reason for missing an interview or a work appointment

It is thought this will be judged in terms of whether or not claimants are following official public health advice on when to self-isolate

Currently, NHS advice states people only need to self-isolate "if advised to by the 111 online coronavirus service or a medical professional."

A DWP spokeswoman said: "Our staff are ready to support people if they are affected – we urge them to contact us by phone, or their Work Coach via their online journal, to explain their situation.

"Anyone not eligible to receive sick pay is able to claim Universal Credit and/or contributory Employment and Support Allowance."

A memo to Jobcentres seen by Sky News helps explain to DWP staff how to cope with the outbreak.

It says there is "no change to the normal arrangements", and claimants cannot simply fail to attend because they are afraid of interacting with other people

The advice says: "If a customer does not attend a scheduled meeting, for example, the normal 'failed to attend' arrangements will apply

It adds: "Government advice is 'business as usual' and we should not change our customer services whilst the level of risk remains as it is now.

"This will be kept under review."

It came as MPs demanded an emergency law tonight to stop Coronavirus leaving thousands of zero-hour workers penniless

Statutory Sick Pay, worth £94.25 per week, is available to zero-hour workers but only covers those on more than £118 a week - after they've been ill for four days

For anyone having trouble getting ibuprofen, Pharmacy first website have packs of 84 ibuprofen for £1.79, also 32 paracetamol for 39p, Careway travel sickness tablets pack of 10 for £1.70 (promethazine, this + paracetamol is night nurse, just loads cheaper). I ordered yesterday, also got 3 of the cheap £3 digital thermometers so if we do get it, we can each use a separate thermometer. They also do 3 generic fluconazole and 2 tubes of clotrimazole for about £5, loads cheaper than canestan or even generics in most shops, they are generally cheaper on most things.

Jumping in to say you can easily make your own hand sanitiser with surging spirit (isopropyl alcohol) and aloe Vera gel

www.vox.com/2020/3/2/21161067/coronavirus-covid19-china

Some interesting stuff about what we can learn from China's response. Surprisingly it isn't primarily the lockdown of Wuhan but the speed of response and contact tracing in other areas that seems to be key to getting it under control.

Slightly more worrying is their amazingly responsive medical system, in that we have no chance in hell of copying that here.

magicrainbowbeans · 03/03/2020 04:32

and claimants cannot simply fail to attend because they are afraid of interacting with other people assuming that applies to severe anxiety sufferers Angry

AbsentmindedWoman · 03/03/2020 04:58

For those of you interested in how this is developing in the United States - here in NYC, the governor Andrew Cuomo has announced:

"a new directive requiring NY health insurers to waive cost sharing associated with testing for #coronavirus, including emergency room, urgent care and office visits.

We can't let cost be a barrier to access to COVID 19 testing for any New Yorker"

I am relieved. I hope he and Mayor Bill join forces and pull out all the stops.

I have a theory as to why children have not been doing the virus much in China. I think it’s because they’ve been confined to their houses. Only one person per household has been allowed to leave and it will in almost every case be the chosen adult who does the spreading.
These circumstances will not necessarily translate to anywhere else but China.

nellodee · 03/03/2020 05:46

Sorry that should read “why children have not been spreading” not “doing”.

ghostlycurtains · 03/03/2020 06:01

You can't just make up theories, children have been testing positive with very mild symptoms. I don't know why some of you refuse to believe any positive elements of this whole thing.

ghostlycurtains · 03/03/2020 06:01

Omg why can I not do bold writing, it's driving me mad Grin

BunsyGirl · 03/03/2020 06:11

Anyone else think that the self-isolation advice is totally out of date. For example, there are more cases in France, Spain and Germany than Singapore, Malaysia and Hong King so it seems ridiculous to self isolate if you show symptoms after travelling to the latter, but not for the former!

nellodee · 03/03/2020 06:21

I am not disputing whatsoever that children are only mildly affected. This is wonderful news. It is, however, very unusual that the snotty little bogey eaters aren’t spreading it as much as usual. I wasn’t aware that it was illegal to make conjectures about this or wonder why it was happening.

nellodee · 03/03/2020 06:25

Here’s a more cheery conjecture. Perhaps the fact they are spreading it less means that exposure to the virus on surfaces is less of a vector than usual, and this is more primarily spread through droplets for this virus.

Happy now?

SistemaAddict · 03/03/2020 06:43

Does anyone know what time today the new guidance is being published? I'm wondering what will happen with schools.

CrunchyCarrot · 03/03/2020 06:49

Boris Johnson's dramatic coronavirus battle plan that could also call up army of NHS workers to treat the sick

I really hope the govt has something better than that up their sleeves. Retired workers will be in the higher risk group for developing complications, surely?

Under the plans, supermarkets would work with suppliers to scale back the variety of foods and groceries available, and instead focus on maintaining supplies of staple products.....

This bothers me, although a sensible measure for the majority, for those of us with food intolerances etc I am worried. So many of the 'staples' are foods I cannot eat. If it's all bread, milk and baked beans I am stuffed as I cannot eat any of that! I hope I'm over-thinking it.
