If stabbing a fellow pilot and trying to down a plane with 180 Israelis isn't terrorism what is?

It seems like a mass terrorism event has been fouled but heroes on an air plane this morning

Many if our news outlets are describing this as a stabbing on an airplane. No...if you stab the pilot and the plane plummet towards the ground that is an attempt at mass murder... terrorism.

Are the media so afraid now of using the word terrorism that they completely downplay the event. Third rated news article in the Guardian after political stories

It's a reminder of how many enemies Israel has and what they are prepared to do.

How can any of you determine it was a terrorist attack when the details haven't been disclosed?

It's like the other day all over again, when so many on MN were 100% sure that Iranian proxies were trying to blow up the airbase.

Listen to the breaking news from the COBRA meeting.

What are you on about? There haven't been nearly as many terror attacks by non-Muslims as there have been by Muslims. That is a plain fact.

Okay. How do you define terrorism? Why don't you find me the internationally accepted definition of terrorism and then we can discuss who has committed the most terrorist acts.

JellySaurus · 30/09/2026 17:24

This isn't 'just' about attacking Israelis or Jews, this is also about Muslims attacking fellow Muslins who dare to seek peace. How much more fanatic can that be?

Twiglets1 · 30/09/2026 17:27

According to reports, the attacker shouted “Allah Akbar”, an Arabic phrase for God is the greatest.

Mossad, Shin Bet and the IDF are all involved in the investigation into the incident.

Israel's defence minister said early intelligence suggested the aircraft’s co-pilot intended to crash the plane and kill everyone on board.

Mr Katz said the incident was “an attempted jihadist terror attack” that was “thwarted only thanks to the heroism of several Israeli passengers”.

Standing near the cockpit, one man issued a plea for help with a trickle of dried blood running down his forehead. “We’re here during the hijacking of the plane,” he said, “we’ve neutralised the terrorist, we’re approaching landing.”

Religious fanatics can be found across all faiths of course. However based on historical events in recent times I do think a Christian or Jewish person is statistically less likely to engage in specific types of terrorist acts than a Muslim.

It’s silly to pretend a group of Anglican priests are equally as likely to have links to a terrorist group as a group of Iranian Muslim clerics.

Have you ever heard of state sponsored terrorism. Just because it is what we in the West recognise as a legitimate country and ally, why does that mean its actions cannot be classified as terrorism.

What do Israelis call Jews who don't support the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. As Gideon Levy recently said, if the producers of Naza were to step back into Israel, they would not live one day.

For those who don’t do links:

At this early stage, the underlying reasons and motives behind this event are unknown and remain subject to a formal investigation. We urge all parties to refrain from premature speculation while authorities gather the facts.

I said earlier I'd bet a tenner allah akbar was involved. A pp wanted to await the investigation results, witness accounts seemingly irrelevant.

Let's see how some fanatics will twist this into Israel's fault..

The passenger wouldn't have been able to kick the door in. One of the pilots could have opened the door during the struggle obviously, other crew are able to access the cockpit but its an aviation secret exactly how security around the cockpit works post 9/11.

That makes sense; thank you. I think initial reports implied that passengers broke in to the cockpit - hence the puzzlement of other posters (including me).

notimagain · 30/09/2026 17:43

lepara · 30/09/2026 17:05

I presume that's so the pilots can get out of their locked deck in an emergency. But (sorry for being flippant) can't they open a cockpit window? I've seen them put flags out the window. I suppose they could but only if on the ground, so here I am wasting time trying to figure out when they would need an axe. Oh, maybe a situation like the Germanwings. I dunno.

I'm sure someone will tell me.

As per a P P -

If the Cabin crew are fighting a cabin fire they may need to prise open panels to check for signs of fire/introduce extinguisant.

So it's pretty standard that a fire axe is carried on most aircraft, usually kept on the flight deck.

Now before we get cries of "well those will have to go" an uncontrollable cabin fire can (and has) brought aircraft down in sub-15 to 20 minutes...an axe or similar is a tool needed on board...

FWIW for escape on the ground purposes the flight deck either has to have openable windows or if all the windows are built not to open there has to be separate escape hatch (e.g. as on the 747).

Where did I say that only Muslims could be fanatic? The barriers to peace are not just the complexities of history, but also the people who do NOT want peace on ANY terms.

The Times of India, Indian press and now some Israeli press reporting that the injured pilot Smit Macchar opened the cockpit door for the crew and passengers and sent the hijack alert.

Well they're going to have to cover their asses as to how an Omani national was piloting a plane to Israel when the UAE entered into an agreement with Israel that pilots from countries which do not recognise Israel are barred from flying there.

Absolutely shocking to read about this. Hopefully a full investigation will reveal more about the motives.

dairydebris · 30/09/2026 17:52

Surely theres enough about this story of interest that we can avoid the usual anti Israel / pro Israel spat?

A heroic Indian / Emirati / most likely Muslim pilot who despite being attacked managed to squawk to alert the world, and possibly open the door to allow help to enter the cockpit.

Heroic passengers/ covert security on the flight along with flydubai crew who managed to disable the problematic person.

All passengers safe and accounted for.

A rare example of lots of people coming together to defeat whatever the perp intended.

The guilty party is custody and the aviation industry is really organized about investigations, there will not be a cover up and the truth will be known.

Lots to celebrate here, I'm focused on that.
