If stabbing a fellow pilot and trying to down a plane with 180 Israelis isn't terrorism what is?

It seems like a mass terrorism event has been fouled but heroes on an air plane this morning

Many if our news outlets are describing this as a stabbing on an airplane. No...if you stab the pilot and the plane plummet towards the ground that is an attempt at mass murder... terrorism.

Are the media so afraid now of using the word terrorism that they completely downplay the event. Third rated news article in the Guardian after political stories

It's a reminder of how many enemies Israel has and what they are prepared to do.

Normal yes, but not every flight and you'd surely avoid it if you were trying to crash a plane. You have one chance at it, you'd surely pick your moment.

If it was done with the flight axe then it's not that special equipment was brought on.

I'm just saying this is odd, but there can be many explanations for odd.

It makes no difference how many pilots were passengers.

The reason that plane didn’t end up smashing into the ground is because the pilot who was attacked managed to open the cabin door.

Without access to the cabin, all of the passengers could have been pilots and they still wouldn’t have been able to prevent the pilot flying from crashing the plane.

The heroic pilot was of a certain ethnicity too. How would you be able to tell the difference between 'good' ethnic men carrying backpacks and ' bad' ethnic men on the Tube?

Likely Hindu due to his surname and the region of India it originates in.

I can tell the difference between Indians, and Pakistanis, Arabs, Afghans and Somalians.

It's extremely racist to assume they can't be told apart just because they may have a similar skin tone, you know.

Greenandyellowday · 30/09/2026 22:04

There was a fairly detailed (at least in so far as details are known) report on Radio 4 news at 6pm today.

PurpleThistle7 · 30/09/2026 22:05

The BBC coverage of this is actually shocking me and I thought I was past being shocked. Every single line says something like ‘the passenger -alleged- whatever happened’ like we can’t just believe them without suspicion.

I have been bracing for weeks now as there seems to always be something awful happening on the holidays these last few years (the major Jewish holidays happen right after another around this time of year).

Am so grateful to the pilot and the passengers for fighting back. Statistically,!the Israeli passengers were IDF veterans so they’d have trained for terror attacks. The pilot is such a hero though for keeping himself focussed while in that kind of pain. Amazing.

I am a Hindu.Well born one anyway.
Good to know I am now racist against my own kind!

How would you- or a pp- tell a jeans wearing Hindu from a Muslim on the Tube? Or a North Indian from a Pakistani, given they come from the same region and were once one country? Or a Bengali Hindu from a Muslim Bangladeshi, given they come from the same region? Assuming you didn't speak to them. Curious to know, even if a segue.

I find myself rather alarmed by all the posters wary of "ethnic' people with backpacks on the Tube, because I am one.

It's called anti semitism.

Basically there was an attempt to crash a plane on its way to Israel by stabbing the co pilot by the pilot. It was averted by the passengers and the plane safely landed. This has been corroborated by the passengers.

Because it involves Jews and Israel the usual haters are out trying to plant misinformation to cast doubt with the less informed on what happened and ideally in their minds blame Israel for it.

You may very well be right. But you are guessing, because the motivation of the stabbed is yet to be ascertained.

Oh please. What do you think it is!?

mids2019 · 30/09/2026 22:20

The motivation is quite obviously hatred of Israelis or Jews. We don't wait round for ever after October 7th to try abd determine the motivations of the evil scum who perpetrated the atrocities. It was terrorism....end of.

I thibk it is good reporting to not be afraid to call out terrorism and name it as such (as Israel has). If it was a UK flight I bet by now it would obviously have been treated as a terrorist incident.

The desperation of newspapers like the guardian to not state the 't' word shows the obvious agenda of rhe paper and journalists...it's as if Owen Jones is filling in for their foreign correspondent.

It is heart warming to see pictures if the survivors who would now all be dead if it wasn't for the heros on board.

Terrorism. Definitely. Attempting to kill a plane full of people, mainly from Israel, after stabbing the pilot.

Brave people intervened. The news tonight suggested they prevented the plane from crashing and all of board dying. These are the dangers Israelis have had to live with for years.

OnePeppyFatball · 30/09/2026 22:23

The Wail said it was a suicide mission. Speculation. That’s all you have.

I suspect you are right. But it is an opinion at this stage, not a fact. Wait for the initial investigation .

I am sure the Saudis will thoroughly interrogate the "bad" pilot.

I can’t. Bit like I can’t tell the difference between white good men and white rapey men. So I don’t put myself into places or situations where the rapey men might be.
The good pilot -from reports - was Indian. They don’t tend to commit terrorist attacks in Europe.

Wow. There are good men and rapey men in every society. I would bet far more than a tenner if it can be proven to me that brown/muslim men are more rapey than anyone else,

No one said brown/muslim men are more rapey than anyone else.

Let's try to stick to the topic of the thread which is the airplane terror attack.

Flydubai hijacker who stabbed fellow pilot 'was a religious extremist'

Passengers and crew wrestled the believed terrorist after he violently attacked his colleague and attempted to take control of the jet cruising at altitude.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised "hero" Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for fighting off his co-pilot, who allegedly attempted to crash the Dubai-Tel Aviv flydubai aircraft, saying India is "proud of him".

"Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy. India is proud of Captain Machchhar," he wrote in a post on X.

A sentiment echoed by Netanyahu, also on X: “My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery. Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker — preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster”.

If this is true about the Omani hijacker being a religious extremist who refused to shake hands with women, I think the airline will be in a lot of trouble re allowing him to be on that flight.

I think we need to separate out the two things here.

Many devout Muslim men wouldn't shake hands with a woman, because it constitutes physical touch with someone not related to them. The same is true for orthodox Jewish men. If I was meeting someone particularly devoted of either religion, whilst I would be very polite I wouldn't offer my hand because I know that it might put them in an awkward position.

This doesn't make them an extremist. It doesn't mean he's not an extremist, but it's not evidence he is one either.

True, but as someone has pointed out not shaking hands isn't in itself an indicator that someone is a terrorist.

Given the way the demand worldwide for pilots and cabin crew has increased as the industry has grown, and the need to keep costs down, how much deep vetting of crew do posters think really goes on in most countries?

The parallel issue of MH monitoring has also been mentioned upthread..

It was much talked about post Germanwings but most of the airlines are wary of investing deeply in that and so most MH support gets provided by the pilot/cabin crew associations.

Even Netanyahu has said that it’s too early to tell. Let it lie!

ACupOfVintage · Yesterday 10:25

As someone who’s lived in the Gulf for almost 50 years I can categorically say that not shaking hands with a member of the opposite sex is not an indication of someone being a terrorist. And people should be in no doubt whatsoever that for every man who doesn’t shake hands with a female there is a female who won’t shake hands with males.

It does indicate a person who tries to practice what is written in the Holy Quran with regards to no touching between members of the opposite apart from certain circumstances but that’s where it starts and ends.

But I thought that whatever Netanyahu said was not to be believed or trusted?

So if he said "that it's too early to tell" does that mean that it absolutely is possible to tell?

The done thing nowadays in a country where there are set protocols when meeting someone is the usual Salam Alekum etc and to ask if the person shakes hands, no offence is taken if either person says no.

We know women will shake hands with each as will men but when it’s the opposite sex you go through the normal greeting then ask - do you shake hands. But it can actually be very easy to suss out the people who will and who won’t if you are encoded in the society
