Conflict in the Middle East

I need to say this out loud

As a British citizen I am disgusted in the utter cowardice of my own government at the moment. If you are an American citizen please believe that there are people in the UK who have no respect for the way we are distancing ourselves from what is happening in the Middle East.
Your government has backbone and courage and wants to do the right thing for all our children’s futures.
I applaud Trump for standing up for his country, military, citizens of Iran…the world, and he doesn't care who he might offend in doing so.
It’s such a pity the same can’t be said for our ‘leader’. I am actually ashamed of my country at this moment in time. I truly hope this changes over the coming days/weeks.

This country should stay out of other countries business

Lobesloope · 02/03/2026 20:33

I think starmer's right, i'm glad we're not getting dragged in. There's never been a good outcome to any wading in!

fucketydoodah · 02/03/2026 20:38

Absolutely disagree

Lavender14 · 02/03/2026 20:38

Couldn't disagree with you more. I'm sick to the back teeth of (predominantly male) world leaders acting with aggression and compromising lives in the process. Starmer is responsible for the lives of citizens but also every member of the military who could be deployed and there is a responsibility for the welfare of civilians globally too. Its crazy to me that you'd think badly of a world leader wanting to approach something as critical and dangerous as a war with caution and reflection. I think he's treading carefully as he bloody should be.

FunkyMonks · 02/03/2026 20:38

For once I actually think we have a prime minister thinking about our country and people and not bending over backwards because America says so.
I can’t stand Starmer but I do think he’s taken the right approach and someone else pointed out America didn’t help us out in WW2 until the end.

My, arent you keen to start dropping bombs on other people's families

AmandaBrotzman · 02/03/2026 18:22

What possible good do you foresee coming from trump's attack on Iran? For the Iranian people or any other part of the world?

You can't see any benefit from taking out the regime behind Hamas, Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad and that recently killed at least 30,000 of its own people? When's the last time you talked to an Iranian, because every Iranian I know is thrilled and have been campaigning for this intervention for many months.

SeaDragon17 · 02/03/2026 20:51

Dropping bombs on girls’ schools without the agreement of the UN, or even his own congress, is what Trump has done.

Trying to affect regime change to pander to the Israelis and also get in the oil fields is what Trump has done.

Gone in like a bull in a china shop and destabilised the whole region’s what Trump has done.

Investigated the legal position and taken a pragmatic stance to protect British citizens and assets and also the rule of international law is what Starmer has done.

onevision · 02/03/2026 20:59

Given that Trump was so dismissive about the contribution other nations made to NATO and the military capabilities of those countries, why would he even need our puny efforts? He and Israel can do it all by themselves. Leave them to it.

Except the regime is still in tact.

You think this is about regime change?

You think this is about anything other than oil?

Let’s not kid yourself that grab ‘em by the pussy trump gives two shits about the women of Iran.

This is about oil, trump’s ego which he needs to inflate to make up for the inadequacy of his dick.

ThedaBara · 02/03/2026 21:05

How old are you OP? Just curious if you're young and hopelessly naive or a Facebook dwelling retiree living in some kind of a bubble. Do you have any friends in real life to share your batty opinions with?

Hazlenuts2016 · 02/03/2026 21:05

Starmer is right in this situation. And Trump isn't doing this out of some sense of justice to end such a brutal regime. He is doing it to distract from the Epstein files and his low approval ratings. His own troops are just cannon fodder to him. Should we send in our own troops to die with the same lack of consideration?

The problem with starting a war like this is you need to have a plan for what happens after you take out the dictator, otherwise you're possibly heading for another situation like Iraq where more people died and extremism grew in the vacuum. He has no plan and doesn't care. He just had an ego problem and an appetite for war because he wants to be seen as a strong man.

I know it's an oft quoted explanation which may well have been true about 50 years ago, but it's really not about oil.

Wars are jolly expensive things, so if it really was about oil then you would save yourself a tonne of cash by spending the taxpayers money on subsidising oil exploration and extraction rather than bombs and planes.

There is oil in lots of places (including even under Windsor Castle!), it's just that it costs more to get it out of the ground than you can sell it for. Now if you had access to some free Government subsidies...

LadyWiddiothethird · 02/03/2026 21:10

Trump is a raving lunatic, the war is illegal and he does not have the support of the majority of Americans.

Look what happened when Blair took us to war! The Americans have a huge armed force,we have little left now.I am a Retired Army Nursing Officer, all our hospitals have gone.We need to stay out of this debacle as long as possible, although I have a bad feeling we will be dragged into it.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/03/2026 21:13

Starmer is right on this one

Lonelycrab · 02/03/2026 21:15

How would you describe the previous interventionism into the Middle East by western forces @simplesimoneatspie

Would you say they have been a success, looking back at recent history?

Simplestars · 02/03/2026 21:19

@simplesimoneatspie
I 💯 disagree with you.
Starmer was right.

Dontgetfooledagain · 02/03/2026 21:20

You're entitled to your opinion @simplesimoneatspie but you are in the minority. There's no appetite for another war in the ME in the UK.

Twiglets1 · 02/03/2026 21:22

MMBaranova · 02/03/2026 20:19

The statement about Cyprus from Jabbari can easily be found on other sources. For instance this fresh X anti-Trump account which has video of it.

Now of course it can be a hyperbolic threat. It has been said though, and is part of the discourse, or shouting match.

An Iranian general who is likely on the hit list (well he will be now even if he wasn’t before), so very likely won’t even be alive in a week or two?

His language is absolutely hyperbolic & ridiculous.

Can’t believe people repeat this shit like it’s signifies anything other than more evidence of the Iranian regime losing the plot.

Putin's regime has a death toll from it's illegal war with Ukraine estimated at between 500,000 and 1,225,000 (plus wounded). China has killed/imprisoned at least 500,000 Uyghurs in the last decade. Why isn't Trump trying to snatch those leaders?

likelysuspect · 02/03/2026 21:49

What war have we got with Iran exactly? Has Iran attacked us?

In any case I wouldnt be in Starmers shoes, half the population thinks like the OP and the other half think its illegal and want nothing to do with it.

You cant win, there is no answer to it.

We either support America or we dont, no middle ground to be had. And I dont think we can back down from Trump unfortunately.

Sure. But there are ‘people in the UK’ who are racists. There are ‘people in the uk’ who are paedophiles. There are all sorts of people in the UK. You only speak for yourself.

I’m with Starmer. Fuck Trump.

He didn't 'drop bombs on a girls school' the IRGC - you know, the Iranians themselves!

Hazlenuts2016 · 02/03/2026 21:56

@simplesimoneatspie also, if you care about the future of our children, how would you feel if your young male relatives have to get ready for conscription in a few years rather than go to uni or start their first job? Just to satisfy the ego of some demented orange reality TV star who should never have been allowed to even run for president.

I doubt his relatives would have opportunities anyway. Cannon fodder or Tesco fodder
