Conflict in the Middle East

I need to say this out loud

As a British citizen I am disgusted in the utter cowardice of my own government at the moment. If you are an American citizen please believe that there are people in the UK who have no respect for the way we are distancing ourselves from what is happening in the Middle East.
Your government has backbone and courage and wants to do the right thing for all our children’s futures.
I applaud Trump for standing up for his country, military, citizens of Iran…the world, and he doesn't care who he might offend in doing so.
It’s such a pity the same can’t be said for our ‘leader’. I am actually ashamed of my country at this moment in time. I truly hope this changes over the coming days/weeks.

Happy with Starmers stance. Hopefully learnt from Blair’s mistakes.
Americans are brain washed by Trump.

Starmer is absolutely right. If Trump thinks it's OK to attack dictators who murder their own citizens and unlawfully attack other countries, why didn't he take down Putin? If we don't have rule of law, including international law, we are up shit creek.

Exactly don’t forget North Korea who he was buddy buddy with in his last term!

Nobody wants a repeat of the Iraq war, he’s right to wait & see. America didn’t join us in ww2 until Pearl Habour… remember that.
My dad served in the Iraq war and I can tell you now most if not all service men & women are still very angry about it.

Edited

I do wish people would stop comparing this war to Iraq. This is NOTHING like the war in Iraq. They did not export terrorism throughout the ME nor the wider world as Iran has done for years.

ObsessiveGoogler · 02/03/2026 18:31

Military action wasn’t even sanctioned by congress let alone other processes within the international community. Even with Iraq there were concerted attempts at getting other countries and the UN on board and it was still a sister. I do not want the UK to in any way support this illegal war.

RH1234 · 02/03/2026 18:31

I’d rather p* off Iran than Trump

Redflagsabounded · 02/03/2026 18:31

Trump has slagged off the whole of NATO on more than one occasion and made it clear he has no respect for other members' forces. We should leave him to deal with the mess he's created on his own.

I agree OP.

Totally disagree. I think the UK should align with the Spanish, who have unequivocally told Trump to fuck off.

Unlike other European countries like France and Germany and the Secretary General of NATO. Spain can just fuck right off.

babysnark123 · 02/03/2026 18:40

Scared of terrorists within its own shores

HappyFace2025 · 02/03/2026 18:42

AmandaBrotzman · 02/03/2026 18:22

What possible good do you foresee coming from trump's attack on Iran? For the Iranian people or any other part of the world?

If you need to ask that you must have been blind to what the Iranian regime has been doing for more years than I can remember,
both to their own citizens and by exporting terror throughout the ME and elsewhere, including the UK where only last year 20 terrorist attacks were foiled. That was reported yesterday.

CurlyKoalie · 02/03/2026 18:45

I dislike Starmer, but I think he does right to keep us out of this.
Trump has his own agenda for the middle east, which I doubt very much is based on "humanitarian aid for the oppressed masses." Trump is only mad at Starmer because he has finally shown a bit of backbone and refused to join in with Trump's bully boy tactics.
I wouldn't even allow Trump use of British bases overseas. His contempt for NATO has been clear . Let him ask his "Board of Peace" members for assistance instead before dragging the UK into it.

attichoarder · 02/03/2026 18:46

I think we should not be involved - whilst I think the regime is abhorrent we do not have a right to start invading nations. I think Keir Starmer should not have offered use of our bases either - I think half giving way to Trump is the worse of both worlds. We should not rush into a war that is illegal

Sandysandytoes · 02/03/2026 18:47

So are you going to say it out loud? Or just post on an anonymous forum.

I don’t know what I think and I’m glad I don’t have to make a decision. It worries me when people have such strong opinions without being fully in formed or having a deep understanding of the situation.

I know that Iran shouldn’t have names and treats its own people appallingly. I also know that trump ripped up the previous deal and is an unreliable negotiator. I fear that trump and his yes men enjoy the excitement of war and demonstrating their power. I’m not sure there is a clear plan for what happens next. I do think that Starmer is pathetic but maybe not committing either way isn’t the worst idea. I suspect he’ll end up pleasing no one and annoying everyone (based on previous history).

Twiglets1 · 02/03/2026 18:49

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/03/2026 18:26

So?

So he's out of step with Europe and I don't want us to be.

Mercurial123 · 02/03/2026 18:50

Totally disagree OP we need to keep out of this illegal war.

GentleSheep · 02/03/2026 18:51

I'm glad we aren't directly involved but Starmer has now said that the UK will allow the US to use our bases specifically for defence purposes. France and Germany have also agreed to this.

https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/prime-ministers-oral-statement-on-iran-2-march-2026

I think if the UK were directly involved in strikes this would only serve to widen the conflict. Last thing the world needs right now.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 02/03/2026 18:53

Most Brits disagree with you. It isn’t cowardice not to jump at every latest whim from America like their little lap dog. We did this in Afghanistan and Iraq and we’ve seen no loyalty from Trump’s administration for that, despite what that cost us.

SpringsOnTheWay · 02/03/2026 18:53

sorry op I disagree. I think this is exactly the correct way to handle it. learn from history.
trumps gone utterly rogue there was no indication they were close with nuclear weapons.

Trump was doing a deal with Iran and they backed out. Basically they said no and he didn’t like it.

theDudesmummy · 02/03/2026 18:55

I was one of the million who marched against the Iraq war. Twice. I dont like Starmer at all but I agree with his once removed approach here.

LadyGreySpillsTheTea · 02/03/2026 18:57

Khameini was an evil piece of shite and the Iranian regime as a whole is appalling, but bombing the crap out of a regime’s leaders is still a blatant violation of international law and will achieve nothing. Both Trump and Netanyahu are very good at pretending international law doesn’t apply to them - it’s something they both have in common with the Iranians (and the Russians, and North Korea…). US meddling in international politics just about always goes pear-shaped, and is seldom done for the sake of the local oppressed population. In this case follow the oil. Or Trump’s hurt feelings about not getting the Nobel Prize. Don’t be naive.
Our goods friends have family in Tehran, there’s been no contact for three days. I’m thinking of them right now.

LilyBunch25 · 02/03/2026 18:57

I disagree, as does my veteran husband who has actually seen real conflict. Trump is not a sane individual. Its like putting fireworks in the hands of an irresponsible child.

Viviennemary · 02/03/2026 18:57

The Americans ie Trump haven't been very supportive over Ukraine and threats from Russia.

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/03/2026 19:00

Twiglets1 · 02/03/2026 18:49

So he's out of step with Europe and I don't want us to be.

Why? I mean, I'm glad you want to be part of the EU but every state has the right to its own stance on exactly how far up Trump's rectum they want to crawl.

ThatAquaRobin · 02/03/2026 19:03

Couldn't disagree more OP

tooloololoo · 02/03/2026 19:06

100% agree
