No if you're not prepared to be scrutinised you shouldn't make public statements. If you deliberately make them in a context where you wont be scrutinised you are a coward.

That’s silly. He was using a high-profile event to say ‘This isn’t ok.’ What ‘scrutiny’ do you think he should have faced? This isn’t PMQ, it’s an actor on a red carpet.

SharonEllis · 05/09/2025 10:27

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/09/2025 10:24

Bizarre how?

You dont think its weird for a British actor who doesnt vote in Israel to stand be on the red carpet and say I support X [insert name of foreign politician] and his government.

Ok.

I expect Mr. Bonneville would be more than happy to expand further on his views and be scrutinised given the appropriate opportunity.

Well then he should have saved it for a proper interview. Im sure the world is dying for Hugh Bonneville's expert analysis of one of the most intractable conflicts of our time.

MorrisZapp · 05/09/2025 10:28

Well done Hugh. I like how he managed to say nice things about the patently shite film too, framing it as fun, and a love letter to fans.

Ok.

A minority of presumably British people who presumably don’t vote in Israel anonymously post in support of the Israeli government on this forum. Is that equally bizarre/odd?

As a public figure, he has a voice and chose to use it. You and I, presumably, are not.

PaxAeterna · 05/09/2025 10:31

Well if there is any box that we should all be ticking, it’s the one where we are against genocide.

Nicely said and said in a way that makes it difficult to edit out.

The world is probably dying for your and my opinions too. Not. Yet here we are, giving them anyway. Should he not be afforded the same opportunity when it presents itself. Or does being an actor disqualify individuals from holding opinions (unless those opinions align with our own …)?

Can anyone point me to the clip of his condemnation of 7 October? Its odd, I can't seem to find one. I guess it was drowned out by the masses of celebrities taking to the airwaves at the time.

Bonneville is just another ill informed fool joining the ranks of Lily Allen etc

❤️🇮🇱❤️

Prettyrosess · 05/09/2025 10:39

Some of the comment on here are quite something. Hugh seems to have touched a nerve for wanting the slaughter of innocent people to stop.

And? I expect Mr. Bonniville is too busy for forums. So he took the opportunity that presented itself to use his public voice, succinctly and effectively. Why shouldn’t he. I expect you would do the same if you had a public profile.
If this thread is anything to go by, with the usual couple of exceptions, he got it just right. Good for him.

You have in depth knowledge of his expertise or otherwise, I take it?

Yes. This.

Can't believe people could be so spiteful to object to his perfectly reasonable message.

YourBrightSnake · 05/09/2025 10:43

Anyone can stand up in public and say 'I'm against what's happening in Gaza' and then get a nice big pat on the back for their virtue. It's entirely meaningless. I'm against people dying in wars too. So what?

PurpleChrayn · 05/09/2025 10:43

It was very much an “Okay, granddad. Let’s get you to bed” moment. Idiotic bandwagon-jumper.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/09/2025 10:44

So, Mr. Bonneville read theology at Corpus Christi. I imagine, if his interest has remained constant in the following decades, he is more well informed than many in these threads.

Hardly an ill-informed fool, I suspect @CaroleLandis .

A theology degree does not give you any qualifications in geopolitics. Going to Oxbridge may well give you an over-inflated sense of your own importance, however.

Edited

Publicly objecting to the proposed displacement and inevitable deaths of further tens of thousands is hardly “virtue signalling”. If you feel it is, you need to take a good, hard look at yourself.

This war is driven by religious hatred. I suspect he is pretty well informed.

Your inverse snobbery is showing. Fools do not get into Cambridge. Branding anyone who disagrees with you an ill-informed fool makes you appear foolish. You have no idea what knowledge and understanding of the geo-politics this man has.

Again, the man is clearly not an idiot.

Why is it that anyone on this board speaking out against the repugnant policies of the Netanyahu government (the majority) is branded a band wagon jumper? You have no idea how long this person has held views in support of the people of Gaza.

Polls have repeatedly shown that the majority of brits are against Israel's military action in Palestine. I think those who support Israel's actions feel threatened knowing their support is in the minority, which is why they insult and patronise those who speak out.

Dogma is never a good thing. Religious, political or otherwise. It always creates conflicts, never helps to cease them.

You're probably right.

dairydebris · 05/09/2025 11:04

I'm thankful to Hugh for his insightful highlighting of this awful crisis, which is receiving no air time at all here in the West. Had he not mentionned it I'd be none the wiser about this terrible situation.

Absolutely ridiculous.

He could have used his celebrity and privileged position to highlight something that would actually help raise awareness- plenty of under reported human crises all over the globe.

Instead he chose a pat, virtue signalling omnicause one liner.
