Sky News report that Israel is expected to approve Benjamin Netanyahu's plan for a takeover of Gaza when the security cabinet meets later today.

According to the Times of Israel, the full cabinet is due to convene at 6pm local time, 4pm in the UK.

Israeli media are reporting that the plan could potentially span over five months, and it is likely to be aimed at destroying Hamas and pressuring it to free remaining hostages.

While some ministers have been critical of the plan, reports suggest Netanyahu is likely to secure a majority of support.

I hope Starmer responds by recognising Palestine.

I hope Starmer responds by recognising Palestine.

He’s clearly under pressure but I’m not holding my breath.

He’s done nothing so far despite our countries involvement at the outset.

He’s a disgrace

Martymcfly24 · 08/08/2025 11:47

He set out the conditions for recognition which has clearly been broken, we are also going to see massive increase in civilian deaths due to the offensive so I can imagine he will have little option but to proceed.

TomeTome · 08/08/2025 11:55

I’m slightly confused by the Israeli threat of cutting security ties if we recognise Palestine. As far as I could see the main “benefit” that the UK received in that vein was averting a potential attack on the Israeli embassy in London. Surely the big losers if that intel wasn’t available would be Israel? As for not being able to sell Israel parts for their military planes, I think most people would prefer we weren’t doing that anyway seeing as Israel are using their military to kill lots of innocent people.

Germany is halting arms to Israel because of their new plan.

Netanyahu is insisting on turning Israel into a pariah state at all costs.

Kakeandkake · 08/08/2025 12:01

Germany will suspend its arms exports to Israel which could be used in the Gaza Strip, Chancellor Friedrich Merz says in reaction to Israel's plans to takeover Gaza City.
Speaking moments ago, Merz says his government will not approve any exports of military equipment to Israel that could be used in Gaza until further notice.
Merz says it was "increasingly difficult to understand" how the Israeli military plan would help achieve legitimate aims, adding: "Under these circumstances, the German government will not authorise any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice."
Historically, Germany has been one of the largest arms suppliers to Israel.

This is going to be a huge blow for Israel. I never thought Germany would take this step before the UK.

TomeTome · 08/08/2025 12:03

Well done Germany

TomeTome · 08/08/2025 12:03

Well done Germany

This will set a precedence for other countries who may have been already mulling doing the same.

Then @Dangermoo should have no problem telling me where Israels borders are then should she? If your argument is that Israel should be able to defend their borders like everyone else then why on earth would you act coy when asked where those borders are. It's a bit odd.

If you don't know Israel's shared borders, you know nothing else. Good day.

Germany
Merz said it was “increasingly difficult to understand” how the Israeli military plan would help achieve the legitimate aims of disarming Hamas and freeing the hostages.

China
China expressed “serious concerns” over Israel’s plan to take control of Gaza City, urging it to “immediately cease its dangerous actions”.

Turkey
Turkey called on the international community to prevent Israel’s plan to take control of Gaza City, saying it was a “heavy blow” to peace. It said Israel’s decision aimed to “forcibly displace Palestinians from their own land

Yair Lapid (Opposition Leader)
Ben Gvir and Smotrich dragged Netanyahu into a move that will take months, lead to the death of the hostages, the killing of many soldiers, cost tens of billions to the Israeli taxpayer, and lead to a political collapse,

I think this is quite true. If you are unable to answer very basic questions relating to your argument then chances are that you know very little. Continuing a conversation with someone who just parrots soundbites without any real understanding of the situation and who tries to shut the conversation down when their ignorance on the topic is revealed is likely to be very unproductive. Good day to you too 🙂

So where are the civilians going to go?

SpaceRaccoon · 08/08/2025 13:17

Tbf some very very pro-Zionist pundits, like Andrew Fox, are critical of the current Gaza plan.
That being said, I'm not sure how else Israel brings this war to a close in a way that means Hamas is no longer running Gaza. I also feel like every time the war is at a crucial point, Western governments blunder in and everything drags out.

Martymcfly24 · 08/08/2025 13:32

Dangermoo · 08/08/2025 13:17

So where are the civilians going to go?

Why do they have to go anywhere?

Palestine is their home country they have a right to stay there.

inamarina · 08/08/2025 13:49

Simplestars · 08/08/2025 09:08

I never mentioned Jews, so let’s not twist my words. My point is simple: Netanyahu’s choices have put Israelis in danger worldwide and devastated Palestinian lives. That’s not about ethnicity, it’s about accountability. What’s so “special” about Netanyahu that his actions can’t be criticised like Putin’s or any other leader’s?

It’s not just Israelis worldwide though, isn’t it? How would anyone be able to tell if someone’s specifically an Israeli anyway, without checking their passport?
It’s Jewish people who are being attacked worldwide.

If Israel retreats, they will be attacked, for Hamas to finish the job. Civilians have no life under Hamas - I also don't believe Hamas act alone and are funded by rich arabs, who covertly share Hamas' goal. Palestinian civilians won't be able to openly turn against Hamas - they need a place where they can at least survive. Israel is offering to protect them from Hamas, as well as securing Israel.

Here's an interesting thread - pro-Israeli discussion about the issue, with the initial account and some of the replies very against, and some pro:

I genuinely don't understand your reasoning at all . According to the recent letter from military experts within Israel Hamas are not the threat they were.

Do you want all Palestinians to leave and go somewhere else and then return when Netanyahu sets up the new state ?

Who could possibly afford 2 million refugees .

It is an interesting twiX thread, his post about UNWRA salaries was informative.

@quantumbutterfly do you follow Andrew Fox? He's normally quite bullish as well.

I won't ever believe.Hamas no longer present a threat, regardless of what ex Israeli officials say.

I don't twiX, I have gone down the rabbit hole of a few thread links on mn and found names that I later searched elsewhere. Andrew Fox was one.

It's always interesting to hear from people using their expertise. Some of the twiX links here have been a bit of a cesspit of terrorist support, the phrase (upthread I think) about going through the motions reminded me of them.

Have you seen Andrew Fox on Triggernometry couple of weeks ago? I found the interview really interesting and informative.

At this point, the distinctions between Hamas and Israel's government are more academic than meaningul.

But, unless Trump changes his tune, there's little that the world can do.
