Conflict in the Middle East

Have the events of the last couple of days changed your mind on the Israel/Gaza crisis?

Not only, but including, the macabre theatre with the coffins of the Bibas babies, Oded Lifshitz, and, as we now know, a currently anonymous Palestinian woman.

The locked coffins with no keys.

The antisemitic poster of Netanyahu as a blood sucking vampire.

The celebrations in Gaza, happy, joyful people surrounding those coffins., children dancing, parents smiling.

The 'mix-up' over Shiri Bibas body.

The discovery that the babies were murdered, not killed in an airstrike.

Does any of that change your mind about the rightness of your position on Israel and Palestine/Gaza?

I don't make threads, I just comment 😉

The question i asked is why doesn't anyone? Why so much more attention on Israeli abuses, than other abuses also being commited?

The interest is on Israel because we are supplying them with arms etc and our government has been supportive of their action. Many people don't want their taxes spent on this or feel that the government's views are representing theirs. It's a criticism of the Israeli government not of Jews.

Equally in my social circle there's a massive amount of campaigning around other countries who's human rights violations etc need addressing. However the mainstream media rarely mention the other countries so unless you know or go looking for the information it's much harder to find. People are still fighting for the rights of others around the world, including those of Palestinians.

AnxiousRose 'they are not about Jews'? Try telling that to Jewish people who are afraid to go into London when these demonstrations take place? To the parents of Jewish children on their way to school every day, to worshippers who no longer feel they can attend synagogue to pray, to many, many Jewish people who no longer feel safe to wear any Jewish symbol that makes them stand out as being Jewish?
While there are demonstrators supporting Palestinians these marches also promote anti Jewish hate. That is a fact born out from the huge rise of antisemitic acts since 7 October 2023.

Exactly
It's horrible to see the rise in antisemitic and islamaphobic attacks in the UK.

Could it have something to do with the fact that the founding charter of Hamas (never repudiated) calls for the murder of all Jews?

That is sad for any Jewish people who do have this fear and they should be able to live their lives without fear.

As should all the people in Gaza, who unfortunately face a much greater threat every single day. The marches are for these people.

Wildflowers99 · 26/02/2025 14:58

Theres a constant obsession that it’s all about me, it’s all about Jewish people

Given I’ve never seen such marches over the rights of any other displaced group, I would say it’s the opposite.

LetThereBeLove · 26/02/2025 15:00

AnxiousRose I don't dispute that people in Gaza live under threat every day. That is primarily down to Hamas. Israelis are also under threat as proven by 7 October 2023. Hamas will continue their barbaric acts given any opportunity.

Edited

But the marches are achieving absolutely nothing for the people in Gaza.

All they are doing is increasing anti semetism and division in this country.

Are you denying the absolute destruction and devestation Israel have caused in Gaza?

The marches are supporting the innocent people in Gaza who are silenced.

The situation in Gaza is the same whether anyone marches in London or not

DelaneysOnTheWineAgain · 26/02/2025 14:40

This isn’t a discussion about other marches.
Im also not talking about violence in the Gaza matches so this is just an inflammatory example and completely irrelevant.
Lets talk Gaza, it’s the thread

Actually if you read the title of the thread it states Have the events of the last couple of days changed your mind on the Israel/Gaza crisis and referred to the monstrous display in Gaza when releasing Israeli hostages including two babies murdered while in captivity.
So no, it's not a thread just about Gaza.

Nope. I have never suggested that.

Well the marchers are hoping that they will help to bring peace so yes that would obviously greatly improve the situation in Gaza.

Yes, the people in Gaza are living in fear due to the actions of the Israeli government.

What does that look like practically?

Practically it looks like thousands of people marching in cities all across the world.

So nothing then...

It's a shame no one wants to raise awareness about the people in Sudan or the DRC

Silenced? Gaza is basically all we ever hear about. I’m willing to bet it has received 100 times the coverage that Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan have. Do you even know what is happening in those countries (without quickly googling)?

GiveMeStrengthAndVodka · 26/02/2025 15:23

Comedycook · 26/02/2025 15:17

It's to put pressure on the government that you don't agree with their stance on the situation. They don't always achieve anything but you would hope with how long these protests have gone on for and the disruption they bring in closing off streets and using police resources the government would listen at least. It gives people a sense that they are doing something go help.

It's the same with any protest. Be that for funding cuts in education to blm to just stop oil.
Our right to protest is an incredibly important one! The French have a lot of sway on their government with protests.

We have no control over the mainstream media. There are plenty of protests/awareness campaigns/fundraising similar to that of Israel/Gaza going on. You just have to know where to find them because they haven't had the same level of main stream attention.
