Conflict in the Middle East

Have the events of the last couple of days changed your mind on the Israel/Gaza crisis?

Not only, but including, the macabre theatre with the coffins of the Bibas babies, Oded Lifshitz, and, as we now know, a currently anonymous Palestinian woman.

The locked coffins with no keys.

The antisemitic poster of Netanyahu as a blood sucking vampire.

The celebrations in Gaza, happy, joyful people surrounding those coffins., children dancing, parents smiling.

The 'mix-up' over Shiri Bibas body.

The discovery that the babies were murdered, not killed in an airstrike.

Does any of that change your mind about the rightness of your position on Israel and Palestine/Gaza?

I would imagine the people of the West Bank would hold a pretty big grudge for being aggressively thrown off their land and homes they have lived in for generations yes wouldn't you?

How's the grudge-holding working out for them?

What's that supposed to mean? Another one who supports Israels terrorism in the West Bank?

Well said

It would be if they could explain whether the very same logic applies to Israelis or not.

Wildflowers99 · 27/02/2025 12:05

They are the aggressors.

They triggered the war.

Picking a fight and losing is not the same as being attacked.

They're not the aggressors in the West Bank though

No explanation needed, ethnic cleansing is bad. Full stop

Yeah you are so right....a completely unprompted attack..just came from nowhere

Whatsinanamehey · 27/02/2025 12:11

And Israel is pushing to annexe the entire occupied territories and then will cry foul when they are criticised for it.

In this sense, israel's actions are more like Russia's.

ArtTheClown · 27/02/2025 12:12

I mean that instead of basing your whole society around perceived historic injustice, it would be better at this stage to accept the existence of Israel and move forward peacefully, because the other option has been tried for decades and has lead to nothing but Palestinian suffering.
They're not getting land and houses back within the borders of the State of Israel.

There is a lot of oversimplification and revisionism on this thread of a very complex history which has seen appalling acts and resistance to peaceful solutions by both sides over the years. Surely rather than picking over the bones of the past we need to look at how we can move forward. This will not be an easy or quick process and needs concerted support from neighbouring countries and the international community who have far too often put their own interests above those of both Palestinians and Israelis. Whatever the question, ethnic cleansing is never the answer, even if it is feasible. This is their home, and they have a right to live there. Israel needs to elect a Government committed to the peace process that acknowledges the rights of Palestinians to self-determination and who do not support settlers. The Palestinians need to be provided with a democratic process and a viable answer to Hamas (which, lets not forget, was actively supported by Israel for several decades in order to stop any real discussion of a two-state solution). No-one is saying this will be easy - the situation has festered for nearly 80 years so it is certainly not going to be solved overnight. But there is no "quick fix" and we have to gain some hope from intractable situations have been resolved.

I don’t agree that it’s a very complex situation at all. People say this only because they want to tar Israel with the same brush and excuse disgusting persecution and terrorism towards Jewish people because they are antisemitic themselves IMO.

The Arabs did not want Jews to have their own State despite the land not being theirs to fully claim either. Arabs come from where? They have fought against it, created a Palestinian identity to fuel global propaganda and hatred towards Jews, and thousands have been killed, billions has been wasted and generations of children have been radicalised. Certain groups make a lot of money out of it. This is precisely where this situation stands today. It has to end.

Hopefully with Trump it will.

Sleepinggreyhounds · 27/02/2025 12:19

@ArtTheClown how are you defining that? Are you including some or all of the WB?

No I'm not - I don't necessarily agree with all of Israel's actions there, although I do understand their need for security. I'd ideally like to see a world where a two-state solution has been successfully implemented, but I'm struggling to see how they get there at at this point.

i suppose the secret here is to look at the key drivers of conflict (generally) - which are often based on livelihoods and living standards . People will always hold onto historical wrongs but when the future is bright, the armed conflict is less worth it.

I mean the Colombian peace process looked impossible but one of the reasons it came about was the solutions for poverty and economic programs within it.

Its not historic injustice its happening right now, it would indeed be better at this stage if the Israeli government accepted the existence of the Palestinians in the West Bank and pulled out, it's been widely accepted this is illegal yet the Israelis press on ignoring international law, hardly the actions of a civilised society at all

Even Ben Gurion acknowledged that Arabs would lose out due to the foundation of the Israeli state. And the land was their home - it's ridiculous to go back to antiquity as to who owns the land. Would you support Americans who have lived in an area for generations being displaced as the land belonged originally to the native americans? Your oversimplification does no favours - and trust me Trump will not bring peace.

It’s only happening right now because Palestinians continue to attack Israelis and carry out terror attacks. If they stopped, Israel would too. It’s not true of the other way round.

No they aren't. Nobody here is pressing Russia to return territory captured from Ukraine. I wonder why not 🤔

Whatsinanamehey · 27/02/2025 12:45

Ofcourse they should.

But there is no pressure on Russia to do so by anyone other than the Ukrainians themselves. No marches supporting them.
