Conflict in the Middle East

Why do Palestinian refugees have a separate refugee agency?

Oodiks · 19/10/2024 20:49

Why is it that all other refugees come under the protection of the UNCHR and are resettled in another country if they cannot return home, but UNWRA keeps Palestinians in camps all over the Middle East and they are never offered the chance to resettle in their host countries?

@Doford Gaza was not an open air prison. People could leave for holidays etc if they had enough money. Where did the money come from? Hamas. how did Hamas get money? International aid. It’s completely false that Gaza had nothing. They had luxury villas complete with swimming pools, a luxury car dealership, gold quarter, wedding shops, shops where you could buy gold plated iPhones, restaurants, waterparks…everything you would expect in any metropolitan city. Get on X and have a look at Imshin. She reposts Gazan’s videos and has been doing so for years before 7/10. The recent ones lamenting what Gaza was like before 7/10 are particularly ironic and sad. They had a lot and it’s all been destroyed by Hamas (well, Hamas members had a lot. There was a lot of poverty and suffering for those not in the club). They could leave on holiday, move abroad (One of my friends has a Palestinian friend. Made me wonder how that’s possible as I also thought there was no way to leave. Either she used to live in Palestine and left without issue or she is descended from a Palestinian. Usually, if your parents move to the US, for example, and you’re born there you would describe yourself as American, no?) and also work in Israel until there were too many terror attacks and Israel brought in tough restrictions on movement.

To add a tiny bit to @BillySnuz ‘s awesome post, the refugee camps are not tent cities. They are areas of normal buildings that are designated as refugee camps, so buildings made of concrete with utilities next to shops, schools etc.

Why are my posts being deleted? I did'nt say anything that conflicts with the talk guidelines. I was questioning WHY Palestinian land was taken. The speed and racist bias of Mumsnet censorship here is insane.

From the one still left your response to a poster talking about pogroms and expulsions is you don't know why Jewish people need a homeland.

Lolapusht · 21/10/2024 20:25

kikisays · 21/10/2024 20:17

So what? Neither did many countries that were form when boundaries were re-drawn by the West. The Palestinian people were still there. Where did you think they came from?

Where do I think the Palestinians came from? The exact same place the Israelis came from. The area of land where all of those people lived was neither Palestine nor Israel, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. It had Arab and Jewish people living there. When the land was divided, each country had a roughly equal amount of land. What went wrong?

And I asked what has that got to do with Palestine. The gaslighting is just wow.

I'm officially done with Mumsnet. You're getting what you want- I give up. This is not a healthy environment for me at all.

@kikisays OK, I responded to what I saw and found quite shocking, I don't think I misrepresented your now deleted post. I guess bye then?

You don’t know why Jewish people, after generations of persecution in Europe, including the holocaust, need a homeland, but you’re being gaslit??

DARVO alert!!!

I wish her posts hadn’t been deleted, I’d rather leave the evidence up.

Gaza has been under blockade for, maybe 17 years now? You can ignore that if you wish but it doesn't stop it being a fact.

Reconciliation · 21/10/2024 22:10

The Palestinian people have been displaced and sent into exile and not accepted by any other country. Wherever they go, they are not accepted and looked down upon and expelled again and again.

They can only be safe and secure if they return to their ancestral homeland from which they were expelled and have a state of their own.

Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, they left behind infrastructure behind that was destroyed by the people and by Hamas.

Hamas have been in charge that whole time, what have they built for their people?

Also, how did Hamas manage to build over 300 miles of tunnels during the blockade?

Israel have a state. The people being denied one are Palestinians, ironically by their occupier Israel so I'm not sure what your point is? You can see how important it is for Israel to have a state so you can surely see how important it is that Israel stops it occupation, apartheid and blockade and allows Palestinians the same rights that everyone else has. You are arguing for something that already exists when you should be advocating for those still without.

I mean, it’s a pretty rubbish blockade…

Lolapusht · 21/10/2024 22:40

I think someone was asking why no surrounding Arab states will take in Palestinians. Might have something to do with past experience of Palestinian groups carrying out insurgencies. Once bitten…

TL:DR The PLO ended up in Lebanon where it played a part in the civil war because they got expelled from Jordan for carrying out attacks there.

It started back in the early 90s as a form of collective punishment of Gazans. It's intensified since then of course.

I wouldn't say it's "rubbish". It's been pretty devastating actually for those living under it.

Somehow Hamas managed to build tunnels for its leaders and its munitions, why not infrastructure for the people?

How should I know what Hamas should or shouldn't do?

What have Hamas built for their people? Miles and miles of tunnels complete with kitchens, bathrooms, data centres, supply routes into Egypt, arms dumps…oh no, wait. The people are not allowed in the tunnels are they? They have to stay between Hamas and the Israeli bombs. One side makes people include bombs shelters when they build a house and the other side turns civilian homes into military targets and refuses to allow the civilians into the tunnels below their feet.

And imposed a blockade on their neighbours. Nice guys.
