Conflict in the Middle East

Why do Palestinian refugees have a separate refugee agency?

Oodiks · 19/10/2024 20:49

Why is it that all other refugees come under the protection of the UNCHR and are resettled in another country if they cannot return home, but UNWRA keeps Palestinians in camps all over the Middle East and they are never offered the chance to resettle in their host countries?

I think around 75% of Palestinians in Jordan took Jordanian citizenship, I think therefore if they were offered it a lot would just take the citizenship of their host countries. The reality is if you were born and raised in Lebanon or Jordan or wherever, you probably speak that dialect of arabic and you probably have an affinity for that culture. If there were a two state solution, how many would prefer to stay where they are rather than move to a newly formed state. I’m saying this as someone who really does want to see a two state solution.

Most of the refugees who had been interned had been released

What connection do Moroccan Arabs have to Palestinians other than religion? Is that not like saying that Irish and Italians are the same? Have you ever seen two Arabic speakers from different countries trying to speak together? And the Palestinian Arabs didn’t invite those people- they would have been just as safe in the UK where there were labour shortages at the time

Just to be clear, are you saying Jewish people would have been safe in Britain in the 30s - when British fascism was on the rise? Are you aware the British government actively restricted the number of Jews it allowed in, despite 'Labour shortages'. Only the well off and people in particular professions were let in and often only temporarily on condition they settled permsnently somewhere else. People often couldn't even bring over members of their family.

Are you trying to suggest that the UK should have taken in more of the Jews who left Germany for Israel?

Are you trying to suggest that there is no need for a Jewish homeland?

Why indeed!

Who do you mean and where should they move to?

Bristol? Texas?

Yes. Whats that got to do with taking over Palestine? Were the Palestinians involved?

Bristol? Texas?

Interestingly there was a tiny Jewish population in Bristol in the 16th century. You know, after the Jews had been expelled from England in 1290, and again from Spain in 1492 oh and Portugal in 1497. They werent supposed to be in England at all but they slipped in, but every once in a while someone noticed and chucked them out. No, i can't imagine why the Jewish people needed a homeland.

The question was, why did the Jewish people need a homeland. That is not 'weaponising the holocaust'.

I am not engaging with you further. I am clear the Jewish people needed a state in their ancestral homeland. You are denying that need and that right.

Alwayslookonthe · 21/10/2024 20:00

If you want to stop fantasising and build a better future for the Palestinians, it begins with the recognition of the fact, however unpalatable for you, that the Jews ain’t leaving.

Kindatired · 21/10/2024 20:03

Nope. Saying that the Arabs living in the Holy land did not have responsibility for providing land for the Jewish people who were expelled from Morocco and the rest of North Africa. Is looks like Israel is determined to permanently annexe the Palestinian Territories and expel the Palestinian Territories rather than share.

You do know that Palestine (the one everyone is currently arguing about) didn’t exist during or prior to WW2?

So what? Neither did many countries that were form when boundaries were re-drawn by the West. The Palestinian people were still there. Where did you think they came from?

kikisays · 21/10/2024 20:22

Why are my posts being deleted? I did'nt say anything that conflicts with the talk guidelines. I was questioning WHY Palestinian land was taken. The speed and racist bias of Mumsnet censorship here is insane.
