At a time when justice, empathy and integrity seem to be in short supply, a little light in the darkness.

Link to the BBC Live page covering statements announcing that the countries will recognise a Palestinian state on 28th May.

Ireland and Norway to recognise Palestinian state, with Spain to follow - BBC News

Israel's foreign ministry has warned the move will "fuel extremism and instability".

@keenforhelp Ireland is actually full. There’s a terrible housing crisis and current international protection applicants are sleeping in tents and there’s even a waiting list for a bed in a tent.

There’s a problem in some pockets of inner city areas that have experienced generations of deprivation and seen migrants come and overtake them. Lockdown disenfranchised this group even more. The Dublin riots are believed to be the result American right wing extremists connecting with some local thugs on telegram- they had their posters printed and ready to start rioting within 3 hours of the trigger event.

There’s also a problem in rural areas where the local infrastructure can’t handle the sheer numbers of beneficiaries of temporary protection (Ukrainians) or asylum applicants. But people muddle on, kids get bussed out to schools that are struggling to keep their numbers up and the school will get another teacher, sessional GPs are contracted to offer sessions and it ticks along. It’s still easier to get a GP appointment than many places. A handful of high profile cases have arisen where a kid can’t get a secondary school place. Most migrants are workers anyway and people appreciate what they do

So basically the Telegraph documentary is like the old Dublin bus timetables- a work of fiction loosely based on fact😂 And what it didn’t show is that there is often “míle murder” if a family are moved on with the community wanting to keep their own asylum seekers or BoTPs after they get used to each other

The Norwegian, Spanish and Irish ambassadors in Israel have been summoned and shown a video of the Oct 7th attacks. Not sure the reason for this is or what they are trying to achieve. I doubt any of these ambassadors based in Tel Aviv are unaware of how horrific the Oct 7th attack was.

Just picking this up now. I saw that. The Israeli foreign affairs fella stated they would be reprimanded! Which I also found a bit mad. Like did he expect one Israeli ambassador to convince these countries that, actually, the IDF are the most moral army in the world after all. I nearly feel bad for Dana.

mollyfolk · 24/05/2024 09:54

What is your actual point @onegrumpyoldwoman ? Are you trying to highlight the plight of asylum seekers in the EU? I’m certainly not against that.

i don’t understand what the EU migration pact has to do with Gaza?

Kindatired · 24/05/2024 13:51

Quite a lot of our latest arrivals are people who served the British and US interests and then were left to the mercy of the Taliban- or should I say lack of Mercy.
Most of the asylum seekers that I meet come from former British colonies so really it’s England that they should be going, not Ireland

I thought that was the plan post Hamas anyway?

The post Hamas being the major hurdle

Then why did Yoav Gallant state last week that he would resign on 6 June unless Nethanyu and the war cabinet had a post war plan for Gaza because he is fed up of there not being a plan?

IbisDancer · 24/05/2024 14:42

ICJ has just ruled that Israel must halt its Rafah offensive immediately, and must allow in independent investigators to conduct fact finding in regards to the allegations of genocide.

I’m surprised that Micheál Martin didn’t make a complaint about the disrespect for the Irish flag in the video . But then maybe it’s like he’d be appropriating the outrage. Imagine if your daughter was abducted by terrorists while she was at work, possibly raped annd murdered and the defence minister set the video of it to diddly eye music. And posted the video in twitter.! Instead of doing a deal to get them released. It’s incomprehensible.

mollyfolk · 24/05/2024 22:32

TV stations showed the ambassadors being admonished?👀 North Korean vibes there.

I’m interested in the US response. Ireland said they received a “neutral response “ when they gave them the heads up. The official response was also quite neutral I thought.

“US President Joe Biden believes a Palestinian state “should be realized through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition,” a White House National Security Council spokesperson”

mactire · 24/05/2024 22:35

Tbh Ireland is well used to flag disrespect from those gombeens up North, I think most Irish know it’s not the sign of great intellect or a foe with a strong argument.

That kind of pettiness is more to be pitied than taken seriously. Like a child saying “I hate you” when you won’t give them an ice cream. If that’s the best Israel can throw at us, well…colour me unimpressed.

Scirocco · 27/05/2024 08:47

I feel like that man is in desperate need of therapy. It must be hard to go around carrying all that anger and fear, which isn't based in reality. Probably not as hard as life under occupation or being burned to death, though.

This is especially gross given what the IDF did last night.

Funny how that tweet is tagging the tories president in Spain despite they’re not the Spanish president. But the right and the far right are in favour of Israel’s actions in Spain so I guess that’s why. In the last few days several members of the Spanish government have said from the river to the sea which has sparkled Israel not allowing access to the Spanish embassy as per that tweet.

tomorrow is the day Spain will recognise Palestine as a country.

Dulra · 28/05/2024 18:27

Made official today. Was listening to a Netanyahu spokesperson on Irish radio and he said "Ireland should be ashamed of themselves" how he could utter those word given what Israel has done in Rafah in the past 48 hours is unbelievable. They are also suggesting it may have a negative impact on our tech industry. Threats and insults what an honourable nation.

The Government has agreed to establish full diplomatic relations between Dublin and Ramallah.

@Dulra if Netanyahu and his friends are disappointed in you, then you know you're doing something right.

I was very proud to see this today. The only criticism I have is that they should have done it years ago. Hopefully Ireland will inspire other countries who are thinking of doing the same.

Really disgraceful tweet from an Israeli government minister. I think it shows clearly the lack of intelligent, articulate individuals available within the Israeli government when a poorly produced video designed to attempt to shame a country for wanting Israeli and Palestinian people alike to enjoy the same rights to self-determination, statehood, peace, security and dignity is all they can think to respond with. That coupled with the threats of yesterday aren't the actions of a level headed government commited to finding a way towards peace. It really makes you wonder what happens behind closed doors when this is how the Israeli government see fit to conduct themselves on the world stage.

https://www.newstalk.com/news/hamas-thanks-ireland-israel-releases-irish-music-video-mixed-with-hamas-attack-1727877

It's absolutely shocking that this is how a government minister in the middle of a war feels his time is best spent. It's mocking, condescending and just childish. I'd be mortified if my government put out videos like that. I wonder what he thought that would achieve.

keenforhelp · 05/07/2024 03:53

Spain, Ireland and Norway are doing nothing to advance the cause of peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Recognising a Palestinian state makes no demands of the Palestinians themselves and will be seen as a reward for terrorism and violence. That particularly matters in the current context because these countries are also calling for a ceasefire in Gaza which would leave Hamas in power, an Iranian funded and armed jihadi death cult that seeks the elimination of Israel. So Hamas has no interest in a viable two state solution and no regional talks can get anywhere while they govern that territory. Neither has the PA/PLO ever really moved away from a maximalist position. Sure, the Bibi far right coalition rejects negotiations and TSS too but to pretend that they constitute the sole barrier to a settlement is just delusional.

mollyfolk · 05/07/2024 19:53

@keenforhelp Which country isn’t calling for a ceasefire?

ConnieCounter · 05/07/2024 20:13

@keenforhelp why are you against the recognition of Palestine if you say you favour a two state solution? Most countries recognise Palestine.

AhNowTed · 05/07/2024 20:51

As long as Palestinians are being ethnically cleansed from the West Bank, by violent settlers aided and abetted by the IDF. Israel will never have security.

As long as right wing Israeli ministers are calling for the WB and Gaza to be ethnically cleansed, Israel will never have security.

As long as Israel bulldozes their homes and steals their land, Israel will never have security.

As long as Palestinians are being bombed to oblivion, Israel will never have security.

As long as Palestinians have literally nothing left to lose, Israel will never have security.

Do you stilll not get it?

keenforhelp · 05/07/2024 21:04

Quite an.unncessary hectoring tone.

I support Israel's right to defend her border in accordance with context and international law.

The state recognition issue is up to Gaza and Israel to resolve themselves.

You can respond to me without commenting on the tone you imagine I have. You do it on a lot of my posts. You can just respond to the points made and not make personal comments.

Israel has never abided by international law regarding its borders unfortunately so I don't think they'll start now.

Your post seemed to say you were upset at your contention that Hamas didn't want a 2 state solution so I assumed you supported one, hence my question.
