At a time when justice, empathy and integrity seem to be in short supply, a little light in the darkness.

Link to the BBC Live page covering statements announcing that the countries will recognise a Palestinian state on 28th May.

Ireland and Norway to recognise Palestinian state, with Spain to follow - BBC News

Israel's foreign ministry has warned the move will "fuel extremism and instability".

Maybe you should stop commenting on things that you know nothing about. That situation was explained several times on the thread, and you continue to make ignorant posts about it despite the explanations.

A far right element exists in Ireland, interestingly, British agitators are very active in it, like Tommy Robinson.

You are tarring everyone with the same brush by saying that "Ireland would riot" when clearly that is not the case.

Also, you have no idea how Ireland would react to Palestinian refugees. Unfortunately for the Palestinians, it's almost impossible to get out of the living hell that Israel has unleashed on them so we probably won't ever know. Not that I'm in favour of ethnic cleansing by Israel, obviously.

I know enough about it to comment and it is not up to you to tell me to stop commenting. Are you the thread police?

Just like you think you know enough about what you think is going on in Gaza to comment.

Just like you, I consume news from social media, newspapers and opinions. I am entitled to an opinion.

I'm afraid you really don't, by assuming ireland would "riot" if gaza refugees were to enter the country shows a deep lack of understanding of this country, unfortunately that doesn't surprise me, this thread is about the government's decision to recognise Palestine, but for some reason you've turned it into an argument about " riots" when you clearly have the same problem in the UK do you not?

Well you don't know either.

All I know is, there is clearly not a sentiment or appetite for Ireland to admit more migrants. The evidence is all over the press - just because you don't like the irony of Ireland supporting Palestine but don't want to take migrants, it does not make me wrong.

They can all 'Go' in the bin. Badly written, poorly researched, overtly biased rubbish that just serves to further indoctrinate people unfortunate enough to be exposed to them.

Well, they must have been protesting about something - people don't start riots for no reason.

And it appears protests are increasing ;

Just like The Guardian, Al Jazeera, BBC . Bin them.

However, 5 papers in the UK are predominantly right wing, compared to two.

Wonder why that is? They tell it like it is.

Don't worry, I'm aware that most of the UK is right-wing, conservative and hates me.

I know I'm not safe here and that my family aren't either.

Well nor am I and my family.

So perhaps we should be joining together and fight against Islamophobia and anti-Semitism instead.

Well I think I do seeing as I've lived here all my life 😂 ireland has taken in thousands of Ukrainian refugees and I've no doubt if it came to it ireland would also take in gazans we are well known for our hospitality didn't you know, the uk has a much much bigger worrying problem with refugees and riots, maybe we should talk about that for a while instead of focusing on a foreign countries stance which you do seem a little obsessed with..

@Scirocco I'm sorry to hear that, it's horrible to not feel safe in your own country 😢

keenforhelp · 23/05/2024 11:24

Well, it remains to be seen whether what you predict would come about.

For the record, I visited Ireland for the first time earlier this year and would love to live there. I went to Dublin and was thrilled to go to the James Joyce museum (my hero) and see the seals at North Bull Island. The people were friendly and warm and I felt happier and safer than I do in England.

I’m really concerned to hear that so many ( Muslims and Jews) feel unsafe in Britain because of their ethnicity. It feels as if the progress of recent decades has been eroded in a few months with this conflict. Anger and fear has definitely increased. What can non Muslims and non Jews do to help ( without adding to the polarisation)

I have no doubt whatsoever we would take in Palestinians, we've taken in so many other refugees from around the world why not Gaza? But as someone mentioned upthread that's not going to happen is it as they have no actual way of leaving, good to hear you enjoyed Dublin!

Maybe that’s a pointless question. But I do feel disheartened by the direction of travel in terms of different faiths and ethnicities feeling safe in THIS country

Thank you for asking. I think the most important things would be for people to care about it, listen and don't dismiss us when we say what is happening to us, challenge it when you notice it (if it's safe to do so), think about how it can be part of personal biases/beliefs/etc and challenge it there too, and treat us as human beings rather than 'other' or 'threat'.

It’s not as straightforward as “Ireland doesn’t want migrants”. studies show that Ireland has a positive attitude towards immigration while also showing that many are concerned about the numbers of refugees arriving during a housing crisis.

I’m not sure if it is ironic that they also support Palestine. All those things are true at the same time. Also the people in the riots and the people in the marches are different people - not everyone things the same way.

Really disgraceful tweet from an Israeli government minister. I think it shows clearly the lack of intelligent, articulate individuals available within the Israeli government when a poorly produced video designed to attempt to shame a country for wanting Israeli and Palestinian people alike to enjoy the same rights to self-determination, statehood, peace, security and dignity is all they can think to respond with. That coupled with the threats of yesterday aren't the actions of a level headed government commited to finding a way towards peace. It really makes you wonder what happens behind closed doors when this is how the Israeli government see fit to conduct themselves on the world stage.

'Hamas Thanks Ireland' - Israel releases Irish music video mixed with Hamas attack

Israel has posted a video of the October 7th attacks mixed with footage of Irish dancing entitled 'Hamas: Thanks Ireland'.

I do wonder if it is Irelands historic relationship with the US that has Israel so ruffled about Irelands support for a Palestinian state? Their reaction to Ireland vs Spain and Norway is quite extraordinary. Are they worried that Biden may start to listen to Ireland(not going to happen in my opinion) but Ireland does have a close relationship with the US, stronger than Spain or Norway, we have access to the Whitehouse every single year and soft power from the Irish American vote, is that what has them so rattled and what makes the anti Irish sentiment from the Israeli government so strong?

I’m not sure Norway but with Spain they’ve been having problems since 7-10 as part of the government spoke against Israel. They’ve been trying to shame and threaten Spain
