Conflict in the Middle East

Why aren’t the people protesting against Israel calling for Hamas to disarm and disband?

LargeAmericano · 10/05/2024 20:43

Surely that will force Israel to immediately stop the war?

They will not be able to continue if their aim of dismantling Hamas is achieved and the hostages are returned.

This is surely the best outcome for the Palestinian people?

The West Bank, although it has ongoing issues with Israel and would never be considered to be on friendly terms, does not attract the same response from Israel, why, possibly because it isn’t run by Hamas, doubtful if there will ever be peace between Israel and Palestine, but Gaza would be better off if it’s people stopped supporting Hamas and yes I realise it’s far more complex than that, but it would be a start

So are you saying everyone in Gaza supports hamas? You really believe that???

And the next time I’m on the phone to the LA trying to sort out provision for my autistic son, or taking my 80 year old FIL to his medical appointments.
why am I not out on the streets protesting more, I will ask myself. Must do better.

What has this got to do with anything? We get it you're busy you've a lot to deal with in your day to day but you also have no clue what's going on in anyone else's life but choose to belittle and sneer at posters here who choose to participate in protest marches. Why so angry?

Dulra · 11/05/2024 10:00

Marjoriefrobisher · 11/05/2024 06:12

it’s surely a related subject. I’m sure you wouldn’t have made your claim without evidence for it, so let’s see it.

Read the Mumsnet talk guidelines you're not meant to post across threads like that. Address your issue with the poster on the thread they posted it

You're assuming the protests have some influence on international policy of course.

Let's assume they do, I agree marching for that would be more effective in stopping the war.

But I don't think everyone on the marches sees that as the end game....

Oh my god, please read a book! If it's just about Hamas why have the IDF been terrorising the people of the West Bank for decades. 507 Palestinian people were killed in the West Bank in 2023 alone, that includes around 81 children.

Wake the hell up

Tripeandonions · 11/05/2024 10:30

@CwmYoy It's proven that money given in aid was stolen by Hamas - how do we know which charities are safe to donate to?

That's a good point.

Kendodd · 11/05/2024 10:31

Well surely a call for a ceasefire goes towards that? A ceasefire is not just one side ceasing to fire, it's nobody firing.

Lampy123678 · 11/05/2024 11:12

Marjoriefrobisher · 11/05/2024 09:01

The motives of the people protesting - and protest is what I was discussing, I am not required to account to you or anyone else for what I do or don’t donate to - do not appear to be as unequivocally pure as you suggest.

It's not about being "pure"?! What an odd thing to suggest. It's about whether you care about Palestinian people or not and judging by your actions (which is nothing except whataboutery and distraction from the issue) you don't. So since you don't care why don't you at least just sit at home and ignore it? But no even worse you actually come on here and engage with people who do care and critique them and their activism. Not even being ignorant because you actually do wanna come on and see and hear about what's happening to people and then deflect from it. Why don't you spend the little free time you have doing something about things you do care about instead of spending so much time posting about an issue you don't? What a sad way to spend your time.

youngones1 · 11/05/2024 13:32

Because they know that won't stop the war. Israel wants to colonise, Gaza, their actions demonstrate this.

It could be that the saying ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ applies somewhat here, no?
Israel are currently destroying Gaza. There is no denying the images we have seen coming out of Gaza. They are living that horror.
Hamas are actively fighting Israel.

Can you truly say that if you were living in Gaza you would not support Hamas in that mission right now? If you had lost 100s of friends and family and both your legs to an Israeli bomb? If you were Hind Rajab’s mother? If you were starving?

It is very easy to sit here from my armchair in my home which has not been bombed, with my family not facing death by starvation with full use of both my legs to condemn Hamas. It is also easy for me to condemn Israel for their actions. None of my family were brutally murdered at Nova festival or are currently being held as hostages in an underground tunnel facing the threat of death, starvation, sexual violence. Again, in that scenario, hand on heart, I don’t know what I would think. I would like to think even if I was in that situation I would hold on to my values but I am only human.

Fluffywigg · 11/05/2024 14:30

I’m going to have a rant…….

I tend to avoid commenting on these threads but I will say that whilst I don’t agree with the constant bombing of Gaza and wish it would stop for the sake of the civilians, Hamas don’t give a flying fuck about the civilians and obviously hide in amongst them.

I feel sorry for the civilians on both sides. I couldn’t care less about any religion and I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, imo, religion has a lot to answer for, because many of the worlds problems and wars stem from it. The extremists of Hamas using its own peope as shields is everything to do with religion (albeit the extreme end) they don’t care because they’re brainwashed to believe they’ll be made Martyrs and go to heaven to 1000 virgins. It blows my mind that people would be willing to commit such atrocious under the false premise of an after life…..

The average person wants peace and follow their religion as good humans. That’s fine, but it’s the extreme end of it that cause these problems and it’s the poor civilians on both sides that simply want to live in peace. The poor women and children always suffer the most as they don’t get a say.

I’m not just talking about the Middle East, even the US now where there are crazy laws in some states to say a women can not have an abortion under any circumstances (even if I’m means they will die if they precede with the pregnancy) again, all to do with the extreme ends of religion.

It’s so fucking maddening to listen to the suffering of all these poor people on the back of it. I hope in the next few generations it will die out and humans will live in a more harmonious place. (That’s if we haven’t ruined the planet, because mankind has a knack of ruining stuff)

Why don’t you spend time actually learning about what your ‘activism’ is supporting?

I came across Mohab Yousef a few months ago. He’s the son of one of the founders of Hamas and an extraordinarily brave human being who has risked his life many times for his views. This podcast with Jordan Peterson, is very interesting, despite being a little long but I was glued to it.

The last 5 minutes, where he talks about having to pay an Al Jazeera host $20,000 to debate against him at a top US University because no one else would, is pretty shocking.

that’s a dangerous way of thinking surely? Were the IRA justified? What about the Manchester Arena bombing? He was motivated by “our” War on Terror? Or the rise in right wing terrorism, is that ok?

yes it's hard to think objectively about the message when you've already judged the messenger.

Any excuse, though.

Of course. But I doubt your world view would change.
