This. I consider their protest to be very relevant. What’s the point in history repeating something that it was agreed should never happen again?

I want the genocide in Gaza to stop.

This protest is obscene.

EmpressOfTheThread · 06/05/2024 19:24

Thank you for your article as well, @SharonEllis

Also, @TrudyProud , that you chose to pipe up with this little gem -Just as wearing a Star of David doesn't mean you are pro genocide of Palestinians is breathtakingly revolting. Equating the most recognisable symbol of Jewish identity with genocide in this way, particularly because it was used during the Holocaust to identify Jews for the purpose of the genocide of Jews, on a thread about a display of antisemitism outside Auschwitz on Yom Hashoah- I'd say it's unbelievable but unfortunately, it's entirely predictable.

The star is on the flag! I didn't put it there.
The flag bearing the star is stabbed into the land after the onslaught against Palestinians and their land. If you have issue with that raise a complaint to the IDF.

I am saying that simply because an evil government and its "army" commit these atrocities with the star I don't judge all Jewish people as being in agreement with the actions of IDF and Netanyahu. It's you that is conflating them as being one and the same yet equally being upset at the thought I might be even though I'm not.

So disgusting

as someone has already pointed out, others suffered in the Holocaust, not only Jews. What an abhorrent way to protest.
anyone who supports this disgrace needs their heads wobbled.

I’m sure you didn’t mean this -but just to point out that the fact that non Jews suffered in the Holocaust is not the point. …
I think that the Holocaust is most closely linked in everyone’s mind with the Nazi attempt to destroy Jews and Judaism . It is deeply abhorrent for pro Palestinian protesters to hijack it.

Yet another poster popping up to mention the Gazan conflict.

IT HAS NOTHING to do with The Holocaust Remembrance Day!!!

And the point being that the ceremony was for Yom Hashoah which is literally, specifically to commemorate Jews lost in the Holocaust. Holocaust Memorial day has a wider remit to include others, but not this commemoration.

I think their point was that the other poster calling it a "relevant protest" was wrong and offensive. That it's not ok to protest like this regardless of your opinion on what's currently going on.

TrudyProud · 06/05/2024 19:46

No you haven't, you've had comments deleted because they were antisemitic and hate speech like yours breaks MN Talk guidelines. It's not some grand Zionist conspiracy to censor your criticism of the Israeli government.

Thing is @25milesfromhome you don't know and can't prove it nor can anyone else because the comments have been deleted. I know what I wrote and know I've said nothing antisemitic.

saying the Israeli government is committing genocide isn't antisemitism

Saying people need to continue to stand against lest it become history that we just have to deal with (similar to slavery, the apartheid, treatment of indigenous Australians, the mau mau genocide etc)

Asserting that in the future Gaza will end up being the Israeli riviera if this genocide isn't stopped isn't antisemitism- Netanyahu's own government has said Gazan's won't be allowed back .

It's these comments that have been deleted

Perhaps so but why mention genocide in Gaza in the post? Why not call it a conflict?

Yom Hashoah is about remembering the genocide.

To be fair, they tried to hijack Holocaust Memorial Day earlier this year too 🙃 Lots of outrage and fake apologies sent out for the offense caused, for them to repeat it all less than four months later.

I agree with you, but I think the point was that even some of the more anti-Israel people can agree that these types of protests are obscene. Because they quite clearly are. The people trying to justify them are simply justifying anti-Semitism 🤷🏻‍♀️

EmpressOfTheThread · 06/05/2024 19:50

There's a picture upthread of a Holocaust memorial being "decorated" with Palestinian artefacts. It's clearly widespread..

25milesfromhome · 06/05/2024 19:52

Also, I just noticed some of the protestors in the photos from that article are wearing yellow daffodils, which are worn to commemorate the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, this being the reason why Yom Hashoah falls on the date it does.
The appropriative cosplaying just goes from strength to strength.

Marjoriefrobisher · 06/05/2024 19:53

Scautish · 06/05/2024 18:09

@Marjoriefrobisher

i am absolutely unashamedly stating that Israel DID NOT (please note past tense) have a right to any land 100+ years ago. Just as Britain had no right to call any of its colonised countries part of its realm. I stand by my comment that historically Israel had no right to take the land from the Arabs.

but given the horrors of WW2, and need for Jewish people to live in peace I would not displace a single Jewish person from the original borders of Israel. So that means Israel needs to continue to exist and I support that.

i do however wish every last Israeli settler was removed from the West Bank. Every single one. And I hope the murdering ones are prospected to the highest possible extent allowed by law - but that won’t happen will it?

The Jewish state doesn’t need the approval of the likes of you to grow and prosper. It exists as of right, not charity, and your bleating can’t change that.

stomachamelon · 06/05/2024 19:54

@TrudyProud you don't think a record is kept of them?

Scautish · 06/05/2024 20:00

@Marjoriefrobisher

can you please make up your mind what you’re attacking me for?

you firstly incorrectly stated I denied the right of Israel to exist. When I said that I did support Israel you said you didn’t need support from the like of me?

anyone would think you’re just spoiling for a fight?

stomachamelon · 06/05/2024 19:54

Quite, I remember things that were said and how they were said and I know an attempt at revisionist history when I see it.

Yom Hashoah is about remembering the genocide.

Among the reasons I refer to it as genocide and not the conflict are:

(a) I’ll use whichever words I want.
(b) I do think it’s genocide based on comparing the actions being carried in Gaza against some of the cases of those convicted of genocide by ICTY and finding them to be at least equivalent.
(c) ‘the genocide’ implies that there has been/could only be one genocide. Which sadly is not true, there have been many genocides. This is another attempt to demand obfuscatory language from others, as a way of minimising the harms being meted out on Palestinians.

Edited my first paragraph to get rid of the stupid rushed error.

Yes, you have used whatever words you want not caring how insensitive they sound on a thread about the Holocaust Remembrance Day.

This is plain wrong. They are out of order.
They can protest anywhere else.

keenforhelp · 06/05/2024 22:31

To do what these “protesters” did today is just despicable. No matter what your viewpoint on Gaza is, not a single one of those Jews, who died in those extermination camps, are responsible for what is happening in Gaza now.
