University students rising up against ties with Israel (title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

Many university students are raising up against the ties their universities have with Israel. Students are asking for this agreements to stop
I can see this is happening in USA which has been in the news quite a lot but I can also read news about Paris as well as UK.

I really doubt much will change but I’m glad people are against these agreements. We can’t change what Israel / Hamas do. But we should be able to change what our governments / universities do.

Clearly not.

Timothy Chalomet took part in an SNL skit that many regarded as racist at worst, poor taste at best. Pretending it was all about starbucks so you can mock people who decided to unfollow him is very disingenuous.

https://x.com/nbcsnl/status/1723601745652191275?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

Perhaps you can watch the sketch and explain why making a joke at the expense of Hamas is so offensive? Racist? I'm not saying it was funny, but people are making shit up, just like they did when they started boycotting Starbucks. The whole thing is a joke.

Did you even attempt to watch the sketch before you parroted what people on social media have said about it?

I'm white, I don't get to decide that when people say they find something racist they are 'making shit up'. I'm sure you would have a lot to say if I was on here saying Jewish people were 'making shit up' if they said they found something antisemitic. Is there a reason you feel you can dictate what people find racist or antisemitic etc?

Talking about how people feel isn't 'parroting' anything. Honestly I'm not sure why you are unable to have something even approaching a respectful conversation on this topic.

noblegiraffe · 14/05/2024 11:06

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but people lie on the internet. Someone posting ‘many people have found this racist’ doesn’t mean it’s true. If you watch the sketch and all you can see is a joke about Hamas being a bad name for a band, I think it’s worth engaging your brain a bit.

The same people are also targeting Chalamet for drinking Starbucks, a boycott which is also based on a lie.

It's obvious you didn't listen to the discussion around the SNL skit and why people found it racist and distasteful. You just jumped to 'I don't think it is, so it isn't' or even worse jumping to accusing people of lying about finding something racist. There is no way to engage in rational, respectful conversation with you, your views around this topic are obviously very deeply engrained. Enjoy your day Smile

noblegiraffe · 14/05/2024 13:29

I asked “Perhaps you can watch the sketch and explain why making a joke at the expense of Hamas is so offensive? Racist?”

And you said ‘it’s racist because people said it was racist’. And you’re still not explaining why, you’re still saying ‘people said it was racist’ as your reasoning.

If you want to provide a better explanation, feel free.

You accused me of 'parroting', suggested I should 'engage my brain', suggested people were 'making shit up' and 'lying' about finding things racist. You have been offensive and insulting. Why on earth would I take the time to do the work for you when you speak to me in such a manner. You are the one disputing that the sketch was offensive, you are one accusing people of 'lying' and 'making shit up', why don't you trot off and prove that people are lying?

I'm sure next time we see someone on here saying that they find something antisemitic we will see you suggesting that they 'engage their brains' and demand that they prove to you that aren't 'lying' and 'making shit up' about feeling a certain type of way. It's not like you would just accuse one type of person of 'making shit up' when they express discomfort with skits whilst 1000s of innocent people are being killed.

noblegiraffe · 14/05/2024 15:01

I’ve googled, the articles at the time did not say it was racist, merely insensitive.

I have however found a reason why people might be making bizarre claims about that skit.

Chalamet is Jewish

SharonEllis · 14/05/2024 15:42

@TextureSeeker I don't understand what is racist about it? Yes, we should always listen if an ethnic group tells us they consider something racist but we still need to understand what is racist about it.

Chalamet is Jewish

A while ago someone posted a random picture on Instagram of TC going about his day, whilst wearing a Star of David necklace and there was comment accusing him of “flaunting his Zionism”. How very dare he.

BelleHathor · 14/05/2024 18:12

So the tweet that Jesse Singal is re-tweeting appears to be the one on twitter with the most engagements (likes/tweets), most others mentioning Chalamet have less than 10 likes.

What's strange about the account that tweeted this list is that prior to the 1st of May 2024 it appears to be a dedicated Renee Rapp "Stan" account with little to no tweets about Palestine.

So it's weird that this Chalamet criticism is being posted/amplified.

BTW the blockout movement is a Tiktok thing. That's what is most popular/influential for the younger generation (hence all the moves to get it banned). As my teen told me Twitter is for the oldies😱.

Nah you’re ok - the real oldies are on Facebook … 😄

Yes, the penny has dropped. I've been searching Chalamet on Twitter and found this more honest reason for why they might boycott him, from well before the current list.

Re: Chalamet's SNL sketch was racist because some people said it was racist.

Here's some other things said about the sketch. Made jokes about the Palestinian genocide. Made fun of the suffering of the people of Gaza. Made fun of children being bombed from the sky.

None of these things happened either.

PeasfullPerson · 14/05/2024 22:06

This thread has been massively derailed and no longer appears to be about university students uprising against genocide.

It now seems to be about bashing people who have used their voices and freedom to follow/block whoever they would like to on social media.

Once again people who express their views in a non violent way are being criticised. These people are not the issue here.

PeasfullPerson · 14/05/2024 22:08

I see that my comment about Israel being a cult was removed. If we were to as an academic exercise look at the way the state of Israel is behaving against the criteria of what makes a
cult, I’m pretty sure they would tick a lot of boxes.

Hélène79 · 14/05/2024 22:14

I never saw your post, but if you referred to "Israel", a country with a 75% Jewish population as a cult, then you deserved to have it deleted. Absolutely gross and racist to suggest that.

If that's not what you said, then I apologise.

noblegiraffe · 14/05/2024 22:21

That's exactly what they said.

PeasfullPerson · 14/05/2024 22:21

I see, but then is it OK for somebody to suggest that people blocking or being upset with public figures have joined a cult? Because I see a common theme of hypocrisy in which criticism of other people is OK, but criticism
of Israel is never OK.

PeasfullPerson · 14/05/2024 22:23

Perhaps what I said is not racist, it is just offensive.

No, it was racist.

If someone called Palestine a cult then I'm sure you'd be among the first on here to call that racist.
