Many university students are raising up against the ties their universities have with Israel. Students are asking for this agreements to stop
I can see this is happening in USA which has been in the news quite a lot but I can also read news about Paris as well as UK.

I really doubt much will change but I’m glad people are against these agreements. We can’t change what Israel / Hamas do. But we should be able to change what our governments / universities do.

what are these agreements? Are they connected to the conflict? Probably not, it’s probably reciprocal arrangements of sharing research etc.

The videos of the students being arrested by the police have been a sight to see and are being watched around the world (especially in the so called authoritarian countries that the American Government like to call out regularly).

America which styles itself as being a modern democracy with free speech embedded in it's constitution, is turning out to be quite hypocritical.

Good for those students who are sticking up for Palestinians 🇵🇸 It’s great how the younger generation are able to see the situation with fresh eyes thanks to more knowledge being easily available to them.

A 13 second out of context clip from a longer Instagram live doesn't really say anything. Especially when the students are up against well funded groups like this:

@Finallyloggedin humbling isn't it, they're under bombardment and still see this and send support ❤️

“It’s Killing the Student Movement”: Canary Mission’s Blacklist of Pro-Palestine Activists Is Taking a Toll

Activists blacklisted by Canary Mission say they've experienced anxiety, and now find themselves stepping back from pro-Palestine advocacy as a result.

In what context is it okay to say zionists don't deserve to live?

In what context is it okay to say zionists don't deserve to live?

One person said it, not all of them. It’s not ok to wish anyone dead, in any context, but sadly we have that from both sides sometimes. Zionism itself is an extreme view therefore it will provoke extreme opinions.

That's why I said context is important, there have been too many short out of context clips floating around during this conflict, deliberately trying to provoke a reaction.

It could be:
"Zionist's do not deserve to live on the land whilst the occupation continues"
"Zionist's do not deserve to live in peace whilst the Palestinians have no right to self-determination"
"Zionist's do not deserve to live in peace whilst Palestinian's are being indiscriminately killed"

Let me tell you what will most likely happen, the longer clip will be found and provide the necessary context which will likely show that the guy said something completely different to what was presented.

Murica · 26/04/2024 18:52

I think everyone will find that a longer clip changes nothing. Here's one from that young man:

Here he is again the other night outside of Columbia:

Free speech does not allow you to block other people from going about their business. It also does not cover speech which is likely to incite lawless action.

Yes naive, uneducated eyes - not a win I don't think

It’s ok if you think everything they’re doing is that.
the university I went to was going to provide some courses hosted by tel aviv university. Because people spoke against it at the end the university is not going to go ahead with it. And im happy with that.

Little bit patronising isn’t it? And dismissing isn’t it ?

These “protests” have been responsible for some awful antisemitism and attacks on Jewish students and staff. It’s reminiscent of Nazi germany.

Saying that zionists don't deserve to live in peace while Palestinians are being killed still isn't great though, it's saying everyone who believes in the existence of a Jewish state needs to be punished.

Not as bad as what he actually said though.

"Zionists don't deserve to live. The same way we're comfortable with accepting that Nazis don't deserve to live, fascists don't deserve to live, racists don't deserve to live, zionists, they shouldn't live in this world. If we're truly living in it, if we're truly living life, if we're truly living in this world in order to achieve peace the existence of Nazis, white supremacists, zionists - these are all the same people - the existence of them and the projects they have built I.e. Israel, its all antithetical to peace. And so yes I feel very comfortable calling for those people to die."

Zionism is NOT an extreme view. It is the view held by the vast majority of Jews worldwide that they have a historic homeland. That Jews are native to holy land is a historic fact. Don't all people deserve a right to a home?

that pretty sad that students of all people support racism towards academic institutions. It’s a frightening time to be Jewish- we can only hope these new antisemites go the same way as the old ones.

merrymelodies · 26/04/2024 19:06

They are asking for the US to stop investing in Israeli companies and supplying arms to Israel, if I've understood correctly.

I didn’t In my comment say it was because of them being Jewish. If my university cut ties with Russian unis I expect them to do the same thing with Israel’s

The Columbia students (among others) are calling for Jewish people to be murdered. It’s horrifying.

Is that what they’re protesting for? Or is that what a few of them are calling for and you’re generalising ?
