It has been said numerous times on these threads over the past six months. None of us are lying about it

Agree and usually by the 'it's a war - what do you expect' posters

Other de-humanising language is pretty widespread too

And killing your own troops or your allies soldiers is 'friendly-fire casualties' not 'collateral damage' which refers to civilians. Wrong de-humanising euphemism

Thank you for that, it's interesting the way they show how they attempt to reduce civilian deaths.

I imagine most would wish for no wars. I watched the Russian memorial yesterday where they said the lost along the figure of 24 million people in the second world war. Crazy how humans kill each other for religion, power, land, ego, culture, etc. Madness.

Yes, I heard that about the Russian dead WW11 yesterday. It is a number so vast we cannot even begin to comprehend it. It is absolutely shocking.

I heard one of the Russian spokespeople 2022 also talk about ‘collateral damage’ regarding perhaps Mariupol Theatre in Ukraine, smugly pointing out it had been the USA who first used the term. Shoigu the monster perhaps?

It is a pretty awful euphemism. It is not even ‘collateral’ death. What is the ‘damage’? A car windscreen? A roof blown off? Or a legless child?

"No one says that.

Why do people pretend people say that"

It's been said on here numerous of times. Scroll back and you'll see.

I've just done the same search and it seems the majority of posts using the term collateral are made by people accusing others of thinking that Palestinian people are collateral damage RATHER than anyone actually saying they are. Have a read of them.... constant accusations of that... post after post. There's a thread about someone thinking people assume they are war collateral damage, and now we have more posts using the term but again NOT saying people are collateral damage. Where does the perception come from?

Edited

Just done a similar search of "fog of war" and "collateral damage".

I think there is a great temptation to set up straw man arguments and use phrases like this and then accuse people who are taking a more questioning approach of being heartless & etc.

How could anyone see human beings as "collateral damage"? to parapgrase a pp?

Maybe it is reassuring that generally they don't?

Kindatired · 10/05/2024 13:16

For most people if they accidentally ran over their neighbour’s dog on an essential trip, they would offer apologies, express remorse , offer to pay the expenses that resulted.

If the civilians really aren’t a secondary target. why is the IDF not taking appropriate actions to mitigate the damage? In fact it’s doing the reverse.

Israeli whistleblowers claim abuse of Palestinians at detention centre

Lorenzo TondoThree Israeli whistleblowers working at the Sde Teiman desert camp, a holding site for Palestinians detained during Israel’s invasion of Gaza, have claimed to have witnessed a series of abuses by the military, including prisoners being restrained, blindfolded, and forced to wear diapers, reports CNN.

The Israeli whistleblowers said of the prisoners:
We were told they were not allowed to move. They should sit upright. They’re not allowed to talk. Not allowed to peek under their blindfold.According to the sources, guards were instructed to enforce silence by shouting “uskot” (Arabic for “shut up”) and to identify and punish problematic individuals.

The witnesses told CNN* the facility, some 18 miles from the Gaza frontier, is split into two parts: enclosures where around 70 Palestinian detainees from Gaza *are placed under extreme physical restraint, and a field hospital “where injured detainees are immobilised, diapered, and fed through straws”.

According to the whistleblowers, the beatings were retaliatory in nature and not intended for intelligence gathering. “They were done out of revenge. It was punishment for what they [Hamas] did on October 7 and punishment for behaviour in the camp.”

One whistleblower described “a routine search when the guards would unleash large dogs on sleeping detainees, lobbing a sound grenade at the enclosure as troops barged in”.

Following the attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, the Israeli military converted three military sites into detention camps for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza. This move aligns with Israel’s Unlawful Combatants Law, which was expanded by the Knesset in December to grant the military greater detention powers.

Responding to CNN’s request for comment on all the allegations, the Israeli military, said in a statement:
The IDF ensures proper conduct towards the detainees in custody. Any allegation of misconduct by IDF soldiers is examined and dealt with accordingly. In appropriate cases, MPCID (Military Police Criminal Investigation’s Division) investigations are opened when there is suspicion of misconduct justifying such action.

Detainees are handcuffed based on their risk level and health status. Incidents of unlawful handcuffing are not known to the authorities.

At a military base that now doubles as a detention center in Israel’s Negev desert, an Israeli working at the facility snapped two photographs of a scene that he says continues to haunt him.

If the IDF says,

Detainees are handcuffed based on their risk level and health status. Incidents of unlawful handcuffing are not known to the authorities,

I take it this just means that whenever they want to put handcuffs on a detainee they just say they are doing so because there is a high risk level, and this is lawful.

Of course no incidents of unlawful handcuffing are known to the ‘authorities’.

palestinian kids must be really dangerous when under detention!
also… seen many pics of Gaza men in the last few months all handcuffed. They must all be dangerous even when they’ve a gun pointing at them to kill them

That's horrific and child abuse and definitely a war crime. All involved should be arrested and put on the child protection list

It's very reassuring that generally people don't use those terms.

PeasfullPerson · 10/05/2024 23:30

The term collateral damage is dehumanising, it takes away the human element of death, it minimise the trauma and unfairness inflicted upon individuals caught up in violence that had nothing to do with them. Who gets to decide whether a cause is worthy or not of inflicting death on other people? Deciding that it is justified and calling jt collateral damage does nothing to minimise the harm that is felt for generations by every person impacted, it merely makes it easier to commit those crimes with a deluded clean conscience, and for by standers who do nothing to feel better.

There's nothing you can say, it's a level of barbarity never seen before, live in 4K. I can't look anymore. May he and all the others rest in peace and may justice be served. 🫂

I believe you know what Kindatired · Yesterday 13:16 meant and it was not that a dead Palestinian child is of no more consequence than a run over dog.

Leave that sort of thinking to certain people among the Israelis in power:

Statements like Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant saying, "We are fighting against animals" are clear examples of the strategy to try to legitimize war crimes, said Gordon.

^Comparisons of Palestinians to "rats or snakes" on Israeli social media accounts are an effort to "dehumanize" them and "legitimize civilian deaths."
https://www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/israel-paints-palestinians-as-animals-to-legitimize-war-crimes-israeli-scholar/3030278

I think what Kindatired meant was that if the Israelis had genuinely killed people by accident, they would have publicly owned their mistake, apologised, and compensated the affected families - in the same way the American military did when they mistakenly blew up a whole family in a car during the withdrawal from Afghanistan mistaking it for a terrorist’s car.

They admitted they had made a terrible mistake and compensated the family. ( Nothing can really compensate, but the apology was clear.)

Israel paints Palestinians as 'animals' to legitimize war crimes: Israeli scholar

Israel 'dehumanizes Palestinians in claims that they are immoral,' Israeli professor of international law and human rights Neve Gordon tells Anadolu - Anadolu Ajansı
