Conflict in the Middle East

To wonder how anyone thought what was happening in Gaza was ok?

I see all these threads popping up about outrage about what's going on, especially now the UN and the US have started acknowledging the situation.
AIBU to wonder how people didn't see this from the beginning??

It's been months and thousands of people have been wiped out. As an Arab with close family links to Palestine, I think this is ethnic cleansing, similar to what Western countries have done to the indigenous people of Australia and America.

Then there’s Isaac Herzog, the Israeli president, who declared: “It is an entire nation out there that is responsible. It’s not true this rhetoric about civilians not aware, not involved. It’s absolutely not true.” No demarcation between militants and civilians exists here. Yoav Gallant, the minister of defence, was a repeat offender. On 9 October, in an unashamed commitment to collective punishment, he declared Israel was imposing a “complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed,” he said. “We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly.”

I don't think it's appropriate to make comparisons with what is happening in Gaza with the holocaust.
We should be able to discuss it without making such comparisons.

Yes, I agree with this.

where the death toll is now estimated at 32,000, while uncounted thousands of other Palestinian people remain buried under rubble. Seventy percent of the victims, a UN committee found, have been children and women

I never said it wasn't awful. I said it is not the same as rounding up six million people, taking them to concentration camps, gassing the majority and making the rest work as slave labour

march10th · 26/03/2024 21:17

Let's give the situation four years then, maybe then it will be awful enough

As much as I value discussion, I am going to withdraw at this point. Your persistent comments maintaining that there is a comparison between the situation in Gaza and the Holocaust are clearly not mis-posts. As much I as appreciate that there are passionate views, even if I don’t share them, relativising the Holocaust is a form of anti-Semitic hatred and I think this is what you are indulging in here. I will bid you all goodnight.

Tripper79 · 26/03/2024 21:16

Yes, I agree with this.

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has issued a report saying there are “reasonable grounds” to believe Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Why can't a Palestinian say the genocide of my people feels like the horrors I learned in GCSE history? Because the victims have become the perpetrators?

There we go.. that is what is thrown at us to shut down the discussions. Honestly, I dont blame you. You're not living it, how can you understand?

I hope you have a goodnight, and thank you for engaging in the discussion.

We just know that if we voice our opinions it's what they are labelled as

Well you've voiced your opinion here and haven't been called anti semetic have you? In what situation do you feel you can't voice your opinion?

I'm afraid I see this notion that you can't speak out against Israel without being called anti semetic as absolute nonsense.

It reminds me of right wing types who proclaim that they can't say "happy Christmas" anymore, because people get offended. It's just not accurate.

I'm Jewish, my dh is not...but I had one of his relatives sit in my house whilst speaking out against Israel while I listened in silence, then proclaim that he couldn't say anything about the situation without being called anti semetic. Utterly bizarre.

You just shut me down by saying I'm anti-Semitic. I never minimised or denied the atrocities and millions of Jewish people who were slaughtered in WW2.

I'm saying that the ethnic cleansing of my people, the genocide now accepted to be happening by the UN and the Western world is following the same path.

By shouting anti-Semitic at me you dismiss my point, shut down any further discussion, and scare me to keep quiet.

I did not.

You agreed with CaterhamReconstituted and wanted to walk out the door? And quoted her comment which I interpreted as agreement.

I don’t accept that is what is happening. Neither that the civilian deaths are deliberate. Individual soldiers committing misconduct is not the same as saying that the Israelis as a whole deliberately target civilians. I see Hamas for what they are though - they are jihadists and hold to an ideology that hates Jews (we know this because jihadism is a global problem and not Gaza-specific).

You might not accept that it is what is happening but facts are facts. The WHO, amongst other organisations, has stated that a famine is imminent in Gaza.
In the words of Sophocles "The truth is always the strongest argument.”
You also appear to be confusing Hamas and The Islamic Jihad, both terrorist groups, both in Gaza They are similar on the surface, in methods and tactics, but their goals and ideologies are different.

I'm leaving the thread because it is getting us nowhere.

I did not call you anti semetic...so do not say that I did.

I don't think it's appropriate to compare it to the holocaust in general. As utterly horrific as the current genocide in Gaza is, it is thankfully not in the scale, and hopefully will not become so. To mention it in general is just to poke somewhere really painful to cause more pain.

However, I don't think we should flinch from specific comparisons where the treatment of Gazans really IS similar - ie the Ghetto's. To ignore aspects of history because it's uncomfortable is wrong. If the Gazans are being treated like those in the ghetto were then we do then a great injustice to ignore this.

Ps: yes Israel had a historical homeland in what is now Israel. More recently most of Britain was Roman, I'm not sure you'd think it was right for Italy to take it back on that basis!(And yes I've seen the fabulous YouTube clip of this)

6 million people were murdered. Put onto cattle trucks and gassed.

No. It's not the same.

You mean 12 millions? My great aunt was one of them. She survived Auschwitz and the death march. She wasn't Jewish, she was a resistant. Let's not forget the other victims of the Holocaust.

Population of Gaza: 590,481
Official death toll: 34,000 (estimated to be much higher)
5.75% of the population killed in 5 months

Israel existed as a kingdom in the ancient world. Palestine was never an established state - it was part of various empires and then was a British mandate before 1948. The UN partitioned it into two states which the Arabs rejected. But we can all read up on the history.

We can all read up indeed but not understand what we read. Don't forget that history is written by the winners.

I'm aware. I referred to six million because I was responding to the ops comment which was

Dont you see that what Israel is doing to the people of Palestine is the same as what was done to them in WW2?

Anyway...I said I was going and I am now. I just wanted to make that clear.
