South Africa has invoked the Genocide Convention against Israel over Gaza

The entire filing is 84 pages long and, frankly, took me several hours to read - it's well worth the effort, though, in that it is rather (painfully at times) clinical and devastating in equal measure: https://www.icj-cij.org/sites/default/files/case-related/192/192-20231228-app-01-00-en.pdf

Go, South Africa!

It might not male that much of a difference in the short term - but: to see the former victims of Apartheid take the lead on the world stage, and offer support (the way they - after multiple decades of campaigning and pressure ... it's not as though world leaders hated Apartheid South Africa "by default") is just ... a little spark of light within the darkness!

Very unlikely Kinda.
Marwan is from Fateh ,
Abbas was only able to get to where he is by getting Marwan and Hamas out of his way,

Polka it’s shameful ,

the skeptical part of me thinks the significance of a country like South Africa taking this step , is that it opens up people’s eyes .
When big countries commit atrocities
or support others in their wars , no one is accountable.
we’ve seen what the President of Namibia said,
I don’t think that many are aware of the atrocities committed by Europeans in Africa , all the killings , child labour , mutilation , showcasing babies at European zoos , and FYI Germany never apologised for all their crimes in Namibia. it took them over a century to admit it was Genocide.
For the longest time the killings of 10 Million Congolese was not considered a genocide because most people died of Starvation and disease.
it’s crazy 😵‍💫

I believe the Federal Republic of Germany did apologise for the crimes of Nazi Germany during their colonial rule era.

https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/germany-officially-calls-colonial-era-killings-namibia-genocide-2021-05-28/

Both the German and Namibian Governments have been criticised for excluding the Herero and Nama tribes from negotiations regarding reparations.

Some journalists in the region said it might be possible weeks ago, remember during the ceasefire Hamas swapped a lot of the Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners that were from Fateh and not just Hamas.

It was seen as Hamas trying to unite the resistance. Marwan is revered by ordinary Palestinians as he started the intifada. He could unite the groups. Whereas Abbas is seen as a traitor, with moves being made against him right now in the West Bank.

Remember a lot of animosity between the factions is because of the US assisted attempt to seize power in Gazs back in 2007/8.

The Gaza Bombshell

After failing to anticipate Hamas’s victory over Fatah in the 2006 Palestinian election, the White House cooked up yet another scandalously covert and self-defeating Middle East debacle: part Iran-contra, part Bay of Pigs. With confidential documents,...

I've just seen that there was a pro Israel march in London today. I find that incredible. In 2024 the flag of a country that is up in court on charges of genocide is being proudly waved, people taking to the streets to support the country that is inducing the current largest hunger crisis in the entire world. People feel so strongly that Israel is doing the right thing starving pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and small children to death that they feel the need to take to streets to support it. I hope lots of photos were taken because that is one for the history books.

PeasfullPerson · 14/01/2024 20:41

@stomachameleon

Why don’t you buy it? I suppose it depends on your definition of Hamas. Do you mean a group of central people at the top or a mass of people who could be considered Hamas fighters or supporters? I don’t know how to define Hamas, do they give out membership cards? What about a disillusioned youth who once attended a meeting because they were looking for a meaning to their life and somewhere to belong? Or somebody who felt they had no alternative? Is it not possible for there to in reality be a spectrum of beliefs? What about the general population of Palestine, do you view them as a homogeneous group who want the destruction of all Jews?
I believe there is a spectrum of beliefs, much as I believe not every member of the IDF wants the destruction of Gaza or believes victory will be found by killing innocent children. I believe there will be a section who take sadistic pleasure in their activities, there will be some who have been brain washed into thinking this is the right thing to do, and there will be some who feel they have no choice.
I think that uncomfortable decisions and concessions will need to be accommodated to find a way forward.

Incredible isn't it. There's a thread about the Pro Palestinian March that was held yesterday and of course it's being called anti semitic.

SomeCatFromJapan · 14/01/2024 20:54

I don't find it all strange that there was a march in support of Israel. There are still over a hundred hostages being held, for one thing. As well as the bombing campaign from both Hamas and Hezbollah, there have been further attempted terrorist attacks, and people may also have relatives or friends in the IDF who they are desperately concerned about.

If people can't understand that, they've dehumanised the Israelis.

It's also worth mentioning that the march was entirely peaceful, there were no arrests that I'm aware of, unlike the previous day.

stomachameleon · 14/01/2024 21:22

@CluelessPepperoni they must feel differently to you then. Which ,if I am following the 'pro pal' threads right, is our right. To March and express how we feel. As long as we don't break the law. No arrests today i believe? No vile placards of hate nor speeches advocating people being 'got rid of'. Advocating massacres.

100 days of captivity for the hostages
Girls in captivity sexually assaulted.
An eleventh month old baby held.

25,000 marched Today.

@HeidiInTheBigCity could you start another thread so we can follow what the ICJ say please?

Polka83 · 14/01/2024 21:58

Interesting article in NYT
”Under the genocide convention, though, the term describes an intent to wipe out a defined group of people and taking steps to achieve that end. There is no threshold of death, or proportion of death, that must be reached. It is possible to kill a relatively small number of people, but still commit an act of genocide.”

40000 people actually.
Actually surprising there were not even more. Beautiful to see;a peaceful gathering and in solidarity with protecting the free world and global borders and the Jewish diaspora.

I stand with you, Israel.

The rhetoric and actions of the IDF and Israeli leaders has been clear. They are now allowing Palestinians to starve and denying them essential medical aid by not allowing in sufficient aid.

“Humanitarian partners’ ability to respond to extensive needs in the northern side of Gaza is being curtailed by recurring denials of access for aid delivers and lack of coordinated safe access by the Israeli authorities.”

I love this…

Speaking to reporters, Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, a legal scholar and one of the lawyers on South Africa’s team, said:
“The struggle continues. This is an episode in a long struggle … It is about 75 years of occupation … This week marked an important episode, but it did not mark the culmination. It marked a very crucial turning point in having the world look at the issue through a legal lens, but the overall struggle itself will continue beyond this … We have been very humbled that we have been able to contribute a very small part to an otherwise long and courageous struggle of the Palestinian people.”

stomachameleon · 14/01/2024 22:19

@queenofarles you can visit both in Israel can't you?
And she is not demanding they hand it over to anyone. It's all Israeli land. Want a map?

The only way Palestinians are seeing river( Gaza) or sea (West Bank) is for Israel not to be there or handed over.

Means different things.

stomachameleon · 14/01/2024 22:21

@CluelessPepperoni and yet manages to send 27,000 rockets into Israel and launch guerrilla attacks.

ConnieCounter · 14/01/2024 22:35

I'm glad we got clarification that the slogan is hateful when some say it but OK when others do. Makes sense.

queenofarles · 14/01/2024 22:38

it also could mean the total annexation of West Bank stomachamelon or maybe Gaza as there is a small stretch of river there ,
it does mean different things that’s true, but nonetheless should not be fine for one and not the other.
