South Africa has invoked the Genocide Convention against Israel over Gaza

The entire filing is 84 pages long and, frankly, took me several hours to read - it's well worth the effort, though, in that it is rather (painfully at times) clinical and devastating in equal measure: https://www.icj-cij.org/sites/default/files/case-related/192/192-20231228-app-01-00-en.pdf

Go, South Africa!

It might not male that much of a difference in the short term - but: to see the former victims of Apartheid take the lead on the world stage, and offer support (the way they - after multiple decades of campaigning and pressure ... it's not as though world leaders hated Apartheid South Africa "by default") is just ... a little spark of light within the darkness!

OP it seems you have ruffled feathers by posting this. Many people just keen to rip South Africa apart rather than look at what they are actually doing, which in this case is invoking the genocide convention.

Wonder why?

plusjamais · 30/12/2023 10:39

One man's terrorist-supporter is another man's dodgy alliance or resistance fighter or something

Weefreetiffany · 30/12/2023 10:40

“No hate crime is good” Where does your point of reference start and end for that statement? Hamas broke the latest hard negotiated ceasefire in the most violent way. They filmed themselves doing it. Why aren’t you mad at them instead of mad at Israel for fighting back? Which is the worse “hate crime” gang raping a woman to death, or dropping a bomb that might kill civilians? I don’t have an answer but I’m not cheering the rapists.

EasterIssland · 30/12/2023 10:40

Weefreetiffany · 30/12/2023 10:21

@EasterIssland are you proud of Hamas/Palestine? Because they’re doing all of that with bells on. Yet for some reason you see them as innocent and Israel as guilty.

I care more about Palestinian lives than the Hamas leaders do that’s for sure.

Not sure why you’re saying Hamas/palestine.

so yoy care about Palestinian lives. But when I care about them then it means I care about Hamas ? 🤔

ps. Israel idf is raping and torturing kids and women. You should be critizing them rather than clapping for them

Sheer hypocrisy I should imagine.

nor am I cheering on the terrorists, don't put words into my mouth.

My comment was in response to a previous poster talking about hate crimes. obviously I don't agree with hate crimes and I don't agree with terrorism. nor do I agree with war crimes or genocide, unsurprisingly.

Back to the main topic, South Africa has invoked the genocide convention which in this instance I agree with.

SomeCatFromJapan · 30/12/2023 10:44

As I asserted in my post above, long term oppression and segregation don't help countries and can lead to longer term systemic issues.

After thirty years I think the current ruling party needs to take some of that responsibility.

hollyholey · 30/12/2023 10:46

@SomeCatFromJapan I've heard the current president Ramaphosa is better than the last one (Zuma) and things are improving somewhat. There's an election coming up soon and my friends in SA are hopeful for positive change.

Perfect then if that’s the case. Case dismissed and Israel can continue their battling against Hamas whilst they kill thousands of innocent people

Anotherdayanotherdiet · 30/12/2023 10:50

Terrorist propaganda bollocks

You wish

If you feel that strongly this would solve the problem then write to them and suggest it. Unfortunately point out hypocrisy is upsetting to the propagandists who rely on it.

hollyholey · 30/12/2023 10:51

@Weefreetiffany there's genocidal intent on both sides.

One side has much greater capacity to inflict it on millions at the moment, hence I'm concerned for the Palestinian people. Why do you find that so offensive?

I will never cheer on genocide on either side, please don't put words in my mouth as I have asked you many times already, but I am happy that Israel in this instance is being called out on it.

SomeCatFromJapan · 30/12/2023 10:52

@hollyholey as an individual yes but he's been ineffectual and unable to control his own party or stem corruption. Things are about as bad as they've ever been in terms of services. In wealthy areas the private sector steps into a gap a lot, and the poor suffer.

The ANC are going to have their worst election result yet, that is true, but the worry is that that will result in an ANC/EFF coalition, and having the latter anywhere near the reins of power is a nightmare scenario as can be evidenced by any municipalities they run.

I agree. Someone had to have the balls to do it. Israel are committing horrific crimes in plain sight. I don't care who calls them out at this stage even if it means there is only the tiniest hope that this will stop Israels killing spree it should be done. I'm sick of seeing starving children pleading for food, of seeing people dismembered, of seeing parents wailing for their dead families. If cowardly Western countries won't do it then I'm glad S. Africa did.

I'm honestly not surprised there's widespread corruption after the decades of systemic oppression. Apartheid was horrific and led at least in part to many of the longer term problems we are still seeing.

Everyone would have hoped it would be better by now. Still, at least Zuma isn't in post any more.

I am so hopeful that the next government can sort it out. I have heard good things about the coalition.

SomeCatFromJapan · 30/12/2023 10:58

There isn't a coalition yet obviously, as the election has not taken place, but if there is it will likely be the EFF not the DA. I promise you you haven't heard good things about the EFF. They're extreme Marxists who like to sing "one settler one bullet" and "kill the boer, kill the farmer". They believe that the state should own all assets.

SomeCatFromJapan · 30/12/2023 10:59

Still, they're mad keen on Hamas and hate Israel so maybe you will like them, from the safe distance of not actually having to live in a country they are helping "govern"?

Parkingt111 · 30/12/2023 11:00

Well done to South Africa. I sincerely hope other countries will follow and call out the Genocide for what it is
And also the total disrespect of international law
A leicester MP tweeted this

I fully support South Africa invoking the Genocide Convention today, against Israel, at the International Court of Justice.
The UK government, prime minister and Labour party leader should consider their complicity and position.
Ceasefire now.”

Parkingt111 · 30/12/2023 11:01

Three Palestinian brothers allegedly detained by Israel in the Gaza Strip claim they were beaten, stripped to their underwear, burnt with cigarettes and subjected to other forms of mistreatment.
Sobhi Yaseen and his brothers Sady and Ibrahim spoke to Reuters news agency about their alleged treatment at the hands of Israeli soldiers.
They claimed they had been taken from their homes in the north of Gaza, separated from their families and held for up to two weeks at unknown locations, including a military barracks or camp.
Sobhi said four people beat him and he was then taken to an open area where captors were "smoking and putting out cigarettes on our backs, spraying sand and water on us, urinating on us".
Reuters said it could not independently confirm their accounts, which were consistent with descriptions from more than 20 other former detainees who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Some friends mentioned a coalition. Whether they were talking about the parties you refer to I have no idea.

I'm not keen on Hamas, thank you for trying to shoehorn that onto me though. Hmm

I'm against genocide, segregation and war crimes.

Why can people not get their head around the fact that we can be against these things without supporting Hamas? Baffling.

Parkingt111 · 30/12/2023 11:04

The above from sky news today

And lets not forget the Palestinians have been treated atrociously in the occupied territories by the occupation for decades, on their own land.
I'm glad people and countries are finally standing up for them

Redlarge · 30/12/2023 11:04

Good. The rest of the world needs to do the same and isreal need to face some serious consequences... but they won't.

Torchdino · 30/12/2023 11:05

South Africa have quite the cheek and need to get their own house in order

Indeed, murders of white farmers are up over 50% this year, its far from an historic issue; lots of race related issues be nice if they practiced what they're preaching.

hollyholey · 30/12/2023 11:06

Interesting that at least half the responses are trying to tear South Africa apart than look at what is actually being done and said by them with regards to this.

Seems a common tactic these days.
