Ok tangent, but have you scrolled down on OP’s link to read the story about the IDF soldiers having a party with a singer? I just watched the clip, and I’m so jealous! I haven’t been to a good party in many years and it looks so fun.

Do you mean the one that a racist singer was singing for the IDF making misogynistic comments about Palestinian women that I won’t repeat here?
You really do need to get out more if this is looks like fun to you! Or perhaps you dont mind racism as long as it’s not antisemitic? Or is this satire too?

This sounds like a justification of the hateful rise of antisemitism, equating ordinary Jewish people worldwide with the actions of the Israeli government. So it’s perfectly okay to target Jewish people and spread antisemitic tropes then?

But what about the ordinary person who is pro Palestine and keeps getting labelled as antisemitic for saying Israel is committing war crimes or a genocide? Islamophobia is on the rise, even those who are neutral through this are being labelled as antisemitic and told they are pro Hamas.

feralunderclass · 18/11/2023 17:31

Is it only acceptable because he's Jewish? If he was Muslim would it also be a mocking, joke? If you look on the comments on YouTube, many obviously didn't realize it was satire.
I don't find things like this funny, unless it is strictly for the intended audience. To put it out there on a public platform I do think is very much a potential driver for antisemitism.

I don’t think you fully understand what satire is, don’t ever read “A modest proposal”, you’ll be horrified.

I think the expressions of anti-semitism has been vandalism, verbal abuse, security at school (given schools and synagogues have been attacked elsewhere). I don’t think the average pro Palestinian protesters are suffering that kind of harrassment, not sure any schools have had to get security in or paint thrown on their walls etc.

I think it should be pretty easy to condemn anti-semitism as appalling in the same way we would condemn islamaphobia. If you find yourself trying to justify either you are suffering from moral rot.

Reallifelurker · 18/11/2023 18:20

Not an expert on Borat but I remember Alf Garnett (yes, I’m old) and how a lot of the people he was actually meant to be satirising really liked him because they agreed with the offensive stuff he came out with.

You mean if a Muslim created a caricature of an Islamophobe and had them sing "throw the Muslims down the well"? I don't see why that would be a problem.

Thank goodness Sacha B C would never dream of using tired tropes and stereotypes to denigrate other communities.

I think* *problem with Borat is he wasn’t just dealing with Jewish themes. The people in Kazakhstan were apparently not very happy with him and banned his films.

Yeah that's probably true, but I don't think you can blame him for people apparently repeating some of the obviously satirical anti-Semitic slogans non ironically.

And either way it doesn't make him wrong about Tiktok.

Xenia · 18/11/2023 18:40

I sitll think freedom of speech on Tiktok, MN and everywhere is very important even if people don't like the views expressed. I want everyone to be free to lampoon all religions and none without getting blown up or visited by the police etc. however any crime of anti semitism or any other offences against the Equality Act 2010 in the UK is a different matter.

Agree@Happyvalleyfan
what has happened to people to think any of this is acceptable.
Too much screen time viewing hate.

Ketzele · 18/11/2023 19:36

Of course he's right. I feel besieged my the antisemitism on Twitter right now - is it new, or was it always there but is suddenly avalanching on me because I am Jewish/have an interest in Jewish issues?

I would love to read just one thread like this that didn't have someone bleating that they're not allowed to criticise Israel without being accused of antisemitism. Ditto the posters saying well, we're only seeing antisemitism because of how Israel is behaving. I'll bet most of these people (rightly) were protesting Muslims aren't collectively guilty in the wake of 9/11.

OuiOuiKitty · 18/11/2023 19:52

My posts were deleted. Presumably because I said that the rise in antisemitism is directly linked to the curren conflict, the Israeli flag containing the star of David and the Israeli flag becoming associated with attempted genocide and ethnic cleansing. That pretending like it is a coincidence is absurd.

My question is why was this post posted here on this board if it has nothing to do with the current conflict? Is there not a more appropriate board to post it on rather than trying to centre people that have nothing to do with the current conflict on this board? I actually find it really distasteful tbh.

PerkingFaintly · 18/11/2023 20:17

There's been a ramping up of antisemitism over the last few years (maybe decade), OuiOuiKitty. Definitely not limited to since 7 Oct, and what I have seen has been coming from sources that couldn't give a shiny shit about the sufferings of Palestinians – in fact, the same sources often also indulge in Islamophobia.

I'm no expert (nor Jewish) but have been keeping a broad weather eye.

PerkingFaintly · 18/11/2023 20:24

Eg This is an informative report from the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation in 2021, on the way social media has been used for "youth-on-youth radicalisation" by groups formed since 2018.

Nothing to do with what he said or the thread

Sure others have already told you that but seriously!

There are a hundred other threads where you can discuss this.

OuiOuikitty is on those too

I find you get into an echo chamber with Twitter- I only get shown tweets that mirror what I like- probably the same with TikTok?

It’s only when you start to read comments to the original tweet that you get opposing views. I can imagine some of those can be hurtful.

However- it does allow you to see how others think, rather than continuing to reinforce your own views - so difficult to know whether to read or not?

I don’t think honestly in a democratic country you can expect to avoid the comment that criticising Israel doesn’t mean you’re antisemitic, as that’s a reasonable belief many will have? Just as you’re not pro Hamas if you’re pro peace.

No you are thinking of Lior Narkis

The party that looks like fun was with Avihu Pinkasov

Lior Narkis' lyrics actually call the geographical place of Gaza a whore, not the women of Gaza.

Still not ideal or befitting, but then nor is a lot of rap music either.

It seems like some people conflate being pro Palestine or anti Zionist with antisemitism.

Unfortunately it is much the same thing with a fair few protesters and pro Palestine people
